George W. Bachelder

I am trying to understand something and may be someone out there can help me please. I am researching George W. Bachelder born abt Feb. 1838 in Maine died abt 1919 in Maine. He married Mary Anne Moore abt 1857 and then married Florida D. Flagg abt 1881.
When trying to find his parents, I read message boards and saw postings stating that his parents are Zadock Bachelder and Polly Blaisdell. Here is my confusion. Zadock and Polly from what I have researched had one son named Zadock G. Bachelder born Mar 22, 1840. The rest of their children were girls. Is this Zadock G. Bachelder born in 1840 indeed George W. Bachelder OR am I at a stumbling block? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi There, I just started yesterday searching for my family members. I am George and Florida Bachelders gggranddaughter. It appears that according to people on this thread that Georges parents were Zadock and Polly. Zadocks parents where Philip Bachelder and Sally with an unknown last name. I am also specifically trying to find information on Florida Flagg Bachelder. My grandmother claims that Florida was a full blooded Native American. I am interested in knowing more about her, including if this is true, which tribe she is from. I can be emailed at jessicatconnor@gmail.com Thanks in advance!

Some Bachelders with Maine Connections

I have no connection to any of these families. I am just posting info. I have come across while volunteering at the historical society. This is by no means a complete list, only the ones I was able to obtain. I have discovered the hard way that within a certain span of time, if you don’t have the date and place of death, it’s hard to track someone down.

Some of the names that appear to be maiden names may very well be married names and the other name given be the maiden name – at least it tells you a date and place of death – a good starting point. This is all the info. I have on these people although I do have a number of vital record books for the Knox County (Maine) area and would be willing to do a quick lookup or two. I am typing in literally hundreds of these entries so please be as specific as possible if you need a lookup.

Lucius F. Bachelder died July 10, 1917 in Rockland. He was a Civil War veteran. He is buried in the Achorn Cemetery (4th Avenue), Rockland, Maine.

Sarah M. Atkins Bachelder died Apr. 11, 1908 in Rockland. She is buried in the Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.
The Bachelders on my side are from England. I don't think that we are related as my family has been here since the 1600's. My immediate family moved from upstate Maine during WW2 and settled in Portland, Maine then to Standish, Maine which was part of Sebago and 7 miles from Gorham. Wish we could help each other.
Connie

I am a gggrandaughter of George Washinging and Mary Ann Moody. I have been doing genealogy on this family over 10 years and I do have information for you but at the present time my records are all in Florida. I recently moved to NC after my husband's death. After the holliday's I should be getting my belongings sent here to NC and will be glad to help you in anyway I can. From what I remember off the top of my head is that GWB married Florida after Mary Ann. Both his wives had many children. Elias, was my ggrandfather. GWB was born in Dallas Plantation/Dead River Junction. Maybe in the mean time you could check on the census records. Also I have a book Allied Families of Rangeley Maine which is also in storage. I'm sorry I can't remember right off the top of my head GWB's anscesters. Please write back if you are interested in hearing further from me

My grandmother, Iona Berdena Bachelder (Luce) was the daughter of Elias Bachelder and Althea Collins. George Washington, was Elias's father and a father to many children with his wife Mary Ann Moody.
He up and left Mary Ann with the children and ran off with a woman by the the name of Florida. Between George and Florida they had many more children. Iona born to Elias and Althea told me many stories when I was a child about this family which got me interested in genealogy. I do know that my g-mother was born in Dallas Plantation. I might have some information to give and hopefully I recieve some from other genealogists that are related to this family. My email address is connieruthhill@aol.com. I was born in Maine as were my family going back to the 1600's. These Bachelders come from England, and my g-mother was very sensitive about her name being spelled correct. My mother, Barbara Althea Luce married Erwin Elmo Harnden from Wilton. His family on his mothers side were Toothaker from Rangeley.

I am a "Maine Bachelder" if you will, although I was not born in Maine, my father Thomas William Bachelder was and his father Aurthur "Bob" Bachelder from Sebago, ME. My familiy and I have tried to do a lot of research on our family's orgiin since there is a debate as to the original origin of our name. Some say English, others German. What makes this so difficult is what the original spelling of our name was. My grandfather said that during his school days and prior, because these were such small towns and uneducated people, you spelled your last name the way your teacher told you to simply because your parents probablly were not able to read and write. This may be one cause for so many variations of the spelling of my last name (Bachelder, Batchelder, Bacheldor, Batcheldor, etc, etc). I can tell you that the debate within our family is whether the "t" was dropped or whether it was added. This may change the origin as the theory is if it was dropped, then it's probably English, however, it if was added, the origin was probably German originally and added to Americanize the name to avoid persecution as German immagrants were heavily persicuted from WWI going forward. I would love to know any information if anybody has it and maybe this information helps. I can tell you that most of my family resides in the Gorham/Portland area except for my imediate family in Vermont.
He is our brick wall, but census information indicates his parents were both born in NY.

Re: STEPHEN BACHILER - History of Lynn, Massachusetts...

REV. STEPHEN BACHILER is also my 10 great grandfather. I have only been at my family research since Jan. 2002. I have a WORLDCONNECT website. (see URL below) I have tons of work still to do on my BACHELDER line.

My line is: STEPHEN/NATHANIEL/NATHANIEL/NATHANIEL/JETHRO/
JETHRO/DANIEL/HANNAH.

Here is the page for HANNAH BACHELDER (who went by BATCHELDER but I have left her as BACHELDER in my FTM)
and her spouse, HEZEKIAH SLEEPER. They were my 2 great grandparents. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the descendants of HANNAH's father DANIEL who emigrated to Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada, from Danville, VT., around the turn of the 19th century. I have a great deal of work to do on the earlier BACHELDER ancestry.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...
