I am not currently at home but should have some additional info to provide. Elias and Elizabeth had additional children some of which are Mary, Elizabeth, Edward and George, the youngest. George is my grandfather who died of tonsilectomy complications in 1920 and was the father of my mother, Helen Elizabeth Bachman Clark.

Re: David Bachman "Black Dave"

You should send for his Civil War information. Often times that will show his dod. Or, since he was a veteran, he was entitled to a free headstone. You could also check to see if one was ordered and where it was sent. He was also entitled to be buried in a national cemetery.

As for the kids being taken by other Bachman family; By the time that David died, his parents were both dead and most of his older brothers remained in Pennsylvania. it seems that only his brother Solomon stayed in the area. There is very little additional info on his brother Jacob from census and military. It could just be that Solomon, who seems to have had a very large family might not have been able to take on his brother's 5 children. I have not investigated any of his sisters and their families. But their husbands may not have wanted to be saddled with 5 extra kids. Their maternal grandparents might have been the only ones able to feed them. Even they were probably not up to caring for a 2-yr old. Remember you are dealing with the mid- to late-1800's. Food wasn't always plentiful and neither was money.

Have fun researching!
Sharon

Thank you so much for the information Sharon! That gives me some great info now only if I could find something on his death and burial to solve the mystery of that one. The other mystery I doubt we'll ever solve is why Cordelia's parents took the kids and that none of the Baughman's seemed to want them.

It's all very interesting. :-)

I did find a book though at the genealogy library about the history of Hancock County that has over a half page write up about the family. It's on the large free standing shelves as it's too big to fit on the regular wall shelves.

I did find out that George Michael Bachman and his wife lived in Ackley, but then they moved to Goodell, and that's where I have him dying Oct. 17, 1884.

Just looked at another tree and they have him as passing away in Avery, Hancock, Iowa. Maybe Ackley is just a typo for Avery, and has just been copied over and over again, by people sharing / copying other people's trees. Just a thought.

Not sure if there is any info in the genealogy room at the MC Public Library or not. There is info on both Hancock and Franklin counties there though.

All of what I've found has been on Ancestry.com by looking at other people's trees. There are at least five others, and they all list him as having died in Ackley. They do not list any sources though, that I remember.

You might want to contact or go to the Ackley Heritage Center, they've got a great historical / genealogy center. I was actually there last week for something else. They may be able to at least help you find out if he died in Ackley.

http://www.ackleyheritagecenter.com

Please let me know what you find. I love a good mystery and I love to help!
Except for my elderly uncle, I'm about the only relative left and I'm the one who has worked on the Family Tree. I have that he died in Goodell, but don't know that for a positive fact. Can you tell me if there is much Family Tree information on this family at the library? I would love to find more information. Thanks for your help!

I was thinking maybe even Ackley, I read on ancestry that's where he died. And looking at the cemetery in Goodell he is the only one in the Bachman family who was buried there before 1900.

I'm not related, just a cemetery buff, so while I was at the library yesterday visiting the archive department we were talking about different stuff and the subject came up of a headstone in a backyard out by Newman High School.

The dates on it are exactly the same as those for George Michael Bachman, except the stone says Michael Bachmann.

I think maybe he had his original stone replaced when his wife died 23 years after him, so that they would have matching stones. This is my theory anyway. Somehow the original stone ended up in a backyard.

I have never heard anything about him being buried in Mason City. Are you a relative? I live in Mason City. He was my great-great-grandfather. I have written my uncle, who is 87, to ask if he knows anything about this, but not sure how clear his mind is anymore.

Thank you! Do you perhaps know if he was buried somewhere else originally?? Like in Ackley maybe? Why I am asking is that there is a headstone in Mason City in a back yard with the name Michael Bachmann on it, with the exact same death date and with an age that calculates exactly to his birthday.
Thinking maybe he got a new stone when his wife died so many years after him? Whether he was originally somewhere else or not, just wondering how his first stone could have ended up in Mason City.

I am looking for any information on James Welcome Bachman Scobee son of David and Cordelia Scobee. My husband is his grandson. I do know that his father died when he was like 2 and then his mother remarried and gave up her children with David Bachman but where they went from there is a mystery. I've heard that they went to live with her parents and then sent to foster care when they died but then I've also heard they were put in foster care immediately so I'm not sure which is true. THANKS

David Stanley Bachman, M.D., of Wilmington, North Carolina, formerly of Morgan County, Ohio passed away in the presence of his loving family on the morning of January 1, 2011.

He was born April 22, 1944 in Savannah, GA, a son of the late Dr. Henry and Ilse Bachman.

Dr. Bachman and his wife, Bunnie, shared 44 joyful and loving years together involved in activities such as flying private aircrafts, boating, fishing, and raising two wonderful sons, Eric and Kevin.

Other interests include an avid supporter of the Wilmington Symphony and WHQR as well as an enthusiasm for a broad spectrum of music from jazz to classical, rock’n roll and the blues. A connoisseur of fine cuisine, David immensely enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

He graduated from M-M High School in McConnelsville, Ohio in 1961. He was a graduate of Harvard College in Cambridge, MA, and then earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School. From 1970-72 he served as a Medical Officer at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.

In 1982, Dr. Bachman joined Wilmington Health Associates and established its Neurology Department. He served as Wilmington Health’s president for 10 years. A dedicated volunteer, he also set up and organized the New Hanover County Health Dept.
Matilda T. Bachman Obit - 1895 Macon Co., IL

The Daily Rebublican, Decatur, IL, 1 Apr 1895, pg. 3

Death entered the home of the Bachman family on West wood street at 1:30 o'clock this (Monday) morning, when Mrs. Matilda T. Bachman passed away in the 67th year of her age. She had not been in good health for a number of years and when her lungs became affected she grew weaker and finally after six weeks of serious illness she fell asleep.

The deceased was the widow of George Bachman, who died in Decatur in 1872. She was born May 5, 1828, at Olddenberg, Germany, and came to Decatur in 1843. At the age of 17 years she united with the Baptist church at Springfield, Ill. and was consistent christian woman all her life. All who enjoyed the acquaintance of Grandma Bachman cherished her love and friendship as that of a mother and sister. She possessed a beautiful sympathietic nature which was chiefly shown in her home life and in her intercourse with neighbors and friends. She was devoted to her chidlren and they were deeply devoted to her. She shared in their success and happiness, having watched them lovingly and tenderly from infancy, shaping their lives and giving them the priceless advice and admonitions of a notable woman and loving mother. Grandma was the friend of all children and many there are in Decatur today who will weep with the family because she is gone, nevermore to smile upon them or speak again.

Mrs. Bachman was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive. They are Will G. and Charles F. Bachman, of the furniture firm of Bachman Bros & Martin; Miss Libbie Bachman and Mrs. Adoph Mueller, all of Decatur; Mrs. George Reubsamen of Omaha Neb.; Mrs. George Hoit, Quincy. Her brother is A. Stecher. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at the residence, 447 West Wood street.
*************************
A description of the funeral was published in The Daily Republican on 2 Apr 1895, pg. 3

Macon County Old Settlers Association obituaries.
not related - Pam

I have no information past Stephen Bachman. Did he have siblings? Who were his parents and what were their dates? Grandparents? Were they always in the Lehigh County area? Did his ancestors belong to any particular congregation, or are they buried at one particular cemetery? Anything would be helpful since I know nothing beyond Stephen and his descendants.

Thanks so much!
Leslie

Hi, everyone.
Please disregard my previous message dated 9 Jan 2009. I have recently received correcting information. Peter Bachman's wife was Catherine WAGNER (1879 - 1927). The wedding photo I mentioned was for a different Peter Bachman.

M. (Matthew) Bachman and Marie A. WEIDNER (1842 - 1885) were Peter's parents. The immigration date of 1873 has not been proven, but Peter's siblings were as mentioned (Paul, Gertrudt, Annie and Caroline)..

If this ties in with your family history, please contact me at minniem@comcast.net. Thank you.

Hello... just wondering if you are familiar with the Baughman/Bachman Surname DNA project hosted by Family Tree DNA. It might be able to help you solve some problems. You can find out more about it by going to Family Tree DNA and then under 'surnames' type in Baughman. That should bring you to the website where you can contact the administrator and get more information.

Cheers, Marcia Dreisbach Falconer
