My grandfather Kurt Robert Muench; his mother and father was Paul Oscar Muench and Earnestine Martha Guenther Muench. They had 4 children...Elsa b.1894, grandad 1892, Paul Walter Muench 1891, and Charlotte Jenny Muench 1904. little Paul died in 1893. Elsa's first name was Luise. If you would like to keep in touch you can e-mail me with info, or I can send it to you if you would like via e-mail. At the moment I do not have a scanner. Or I would send you copies of pictures to show your friend. Tina Brown

Thanks Henrik. I don't read German well anymore, its been an awfully long time. I will be happy to keep you updated, when I get information you might want or need. Thanks for sending me that info, I don't recognize the folks in the 1919 picture. I have an Uncle Heinz Bachmann that was born in 1922.Uncle Heinz lives(d) in San Antonio Tx. His brother Walter lived in marlton New Jersey until his death back in I beleive 1962. Our family lived in Hartha / Heidelberg/schkenditz/Stuttgart/chemnitz. My gr. Grandmother Selma Hengst Bachmann married August Bachmann He came with her to America in 1892. They had 6 children I believe. At least that I am aware of. Carl, Rudolph, Johanna, Johannes, Alfrede and Walter. You can e-mail at my address, but please remember that I read precious little German anymore. Our family in Hartha in Sachsen was also related somehow to the Blummenstetters. Thanks for the information. Tina

to Thomas Bachmann:
My oldest known ancester is Christian Baughman who migrated to America in the late 1700's I believe from the Canton Bern area. Do you know if the name spelling is correct, or were they all called Bachmann/Bachman? My DNA test shows a blood relation to the Michael Bachman(b.1692) who migrated in 1712.
Thank you,
B. Jerry Baughman

I am going back to Oregon/Washington after General (world wide ) Conference is over this week end. I will contact you when I get to my sister's place, north of Seattle. She has loads of genealogy, as does my other sister there. I have other relatives there also. Cousins Eddie and Mary, whose father was Norman, who retired out of Boeing, and played a semi major role in world war II bombers, being an inventor of a bomb bay door opener, so they didn't have to be opened by hand. I have the original newspaper clipping from it. He was good at building other things also, as most of us Bachmanns are. I also have an old homemade metal detector that he made, back in the 60's, but plan on giving it to Eddy if I ever see him again. He was a music teacher in the Seattle area. Haven't seen him in years.

Wayne

My genealogy is not here in Utah. I am just here visiting my mom. If I remember correctly, he is my great grandfather's brother or uncle. I am the great grandson of Albert Bachmann, who died in 1962?. I had spent the summer with my grandfather, to help him on the farm. I was 12 yrs old at the time. My grandparents were taking care of him. My great grandfather died that fall, '62? at the ripe age of 93. We are a bunch of long livers, usually 85 or older.

Dear Phillis,
Billeter is a very important source, no doubt. But there are reasons to be careful: the body of material is enormous (approx. 2 Million individuals in 3000 families on more than 72 thousand sheets of paper). The data are not always 100% acurate. For the children of early generation he sometimes made educated guesses. On the other hand his handwriting is not alway very clear, 4 and 9 look very alike.

As for our Michael confusion, here the results of my research:

Jacob Bachmann m.1589 Margareth Kistler: Michael b.1599
=Michael (b.1599) m.
Hi,
I must have had a senior moment as I gave the marriage date for Hans & Catharina instead of Michael. Yes, Michael and Anna Gerber were m. 23 May 1653.
Billeter seemed to say that it was Michael b 1624 who m. Cath.Gerber and was the father of my Catharina b.24 Feb 1656 Buchholterberg.
In the 4 volume "Emigrants,Refugees & Prisoners" on p. 54, it gives the Michael who m. Agatha Kuntzie, as b 11 Oct 1629 and he is given as the son of Michael b 1 Apr 1599 who was the son of Jacob Bachman b c 1656 who m Margareth Kistler and lived at Brenzikofen. This has a note that this Michael "may be the Michael B. who m Benedica Ruffnaught/Ruffner."
A bit confusing.
What do you think?
Phyllis

Dear Phyllis,
the line of descentants of Bachmann/Imhof causes some confusion to me:
Based on the information available through FamilySearch various submitters write that Hans Bachmann and Catharina Imhof got married in 1603.

Their son Michael was born 1624 and was married first to Catharina Erlach and later (1651) to Agatha Kuenzi. For their descendants please check my tree, link attached above.

The only Michael Bachmann married to an Anna Gerber was born in 1629 the son of Michael B. and Benedicta Ruefenacht. The marriage of Michael Bachmann and Anna Gerber took place in 1653. Her daughter Catharina was born in 1656. I have not (yet) been able to place the Bachmann/Ruefenacht family in my own tree.

Regards
Thomas Bachmann

Amazing!
I too descend from Jacob Bachmann and his wife Adelheid MOSER through their son Hans & wife Catharina IMHOF.
This is according to Julius Billeter.
From Hans the line goes:
Michael Bachmann & Anna GERBER m 1603 Brenzlkofen
Catherine Bachmann m. Peter WYSS about 1680
Nikles WYSS m Magdalena DUMMERMUTH 1718
Anna (Dorotea?) WYSS of Buchholterberg m Johann Christian BACHMAN 6 Sept 1747.

I have never been able to trace Johann Christian any further, but it appears that he came from Ibach,Oberdiesbach, Canton Berne. They came to York Co., PA in 1754.
The line then comes down to my mother.

If you should have any hints or proof on this line, it would be fantastic!!

Phyllis

Bachmann--Berlin to NY possibly via England

My great grandmother was Martha (Bachmann) Stoneham. I know the following information from marriage, census and death records.

She was born about 1888 in Germany (possibly Berlin) to Harry (Henry?) Bachmann and Eliza Retter. She came to the US about 1903 and married Michael L Stoneham 20 June 1909. She died on 23 August 1929.

I found a ship record that I thought might be her. It seems really perfect but I don't have any confirmation.

The ship's record is for the SS St. Louis sailing from Southhampton on 31 October 1903 and shows Eliza Backmann (with an umlaut over the a) traveling with five children (Martha age 14, Max age 13, Florie age 9, Gertrude age 3, and Marie age 6 months) to join her husband H. Backmann in NYC. Last residence is Romsey, England.

I found what I believe to be the same family on the 1920 census in Queens. Just the parents and 3 younger daughters are showing on this record.

Harry's occupation is listed as an engineer in a factory. This makes me wonder if it is the correct family. My aunt told me that her grandmother's father was a ferry boat captain. She even sent me a picture of a boat that was his.

I'm wondering if anybody is related to this family and might be able to confirm or deny that my great-grandmother was part of it. Or if anybody is related to Martha (Bachmann) Stoneham and knows who her family was if they were not the family listed above.

Emil Christian Wilhelm Gotthelf Bachmann 1849-1909 was my great grandfather and I have NO information on him BEFORE his CAME to America. (Parents, siblings etc)
Because he was only 14 or 15 and alone when he left Saxony I suspect he was related to some of the Bachmanns who were already in St. Louis but I can't find any proof.

I am also trying to connect Herman H. Hufendick 1816-1897 to any of the other Hufendicks who came to St. Louis around 1852.

If you have any info to share I would be really grateful.

Thanks

Brother Andreas (b.13 June 1829) remained in Jonaswalde and descendants live on the family Hof in Jonaswalde to this day.

Parents Andreas Bachmann and Johanna Christiana Teichmann had 3 other children, Carolina (b.3 Feb 1826), Sopia (b. 27 June 1836) and Hermann (b. 31 July 1839). I think Karl or Charles can to the US in 1862 (according to 1900 census) and him and his wife appeared to have a few children in Newark from 1870 to the early 1880's.

I may look into some of the DNA tests to see what line I may be tied to.

Thanks for your reply,
Dan

Re: Bachmann Family - Newton, KS and Newark New Jersey

My Bachmann ancestors also livied in Newark, New Jersey from 1870 to 1950. The Census indexes have interpretted the names many ways: with and without two "N's" is the easy one. I have found Buchman Backman, Blackman, and variants on those. Recently I got some church records courtesy of another researcher from St Peter's catholic church in Newark and in those the first names are sometime the Americanized versions, sometimes German versions, and sometimes Latin versions. It is all very confusing.

I have DNA results for me. You might think about doing the simple tests for yourself. Must havee been some hanky panky or name changes or something because my type is unusual among people named Bachmann in the databases.

My immigrant ancestor was Engelbert Bachmann b 1847 from Burgstadt, Bavaria; d 1886 Newark, NJ; emigrated 1870; stone / brick mason.

Bachmann Family - Newton, KS and Newark New Jersey

I am looking for help regarding my Bachmann line. My Great Grandfather, Charles Frederick Bachmann was born in Newton Kansas in 1886 to Charles and Mary Bachmann. I know his date is correct, but before that, everything is fuzzy. Charles and Mary are listed in the 1900 census with 1 n (Bachman) and their dates for coming to America do not provide an additional help. To complicate matters, the Hunkele family tree lists Charles as Karl (he signs his name as Chals. which may look like Karl) and his wife was Maria Hunkele. Perhaps they changed their names in the US.

It looks like the Bachmann line came from Erfurt Germany, but I have no idea how to pursue that further.

Thanks,
Dan Bachmann

I am researching the Bachmann descendants from Oberdiessbach, Brenzikofen, Buchholterberg (Canton of Berne), Switzerland. Starting with the five brothers Jacob (b.1552), Christen (b.1557), Hans (b.1561), Niclaus (b.1563), Michael (b.1564).
I am particularly interested in Bachmans who immigrated to the US.

Any information much appreciated.
Thomas Bachmann, Switzerland
