Mine was born in LA about 1867 and married Antonio Massa.

Also, on their son Louis Victor's baptism record are two witnesses: Stephan(e?) & Victoria Bacigalupi.

Do things ring any bells for you?
Thanks!

She is said to have a sister who may have lived in Chicago. My great grandmother relocated to Fort Wayne Inian. She was born on October 19, 1855

Thanks

Bruce Bauer

I recently purchased the subject undated studio portrait of 3 girls and 2 boys, identified at the top of the print "The Baccigalupi children." The studio name and location were obliterated by someone who burnished this information off the front of the mount. The photo was purchased with a group of other studio portraits of Italian-American families taken in San Francisco and St. Helena, CA.

The boys are the youngest ones; estimated ages 4 and 6 years. Estimated ages of the girls are 7, 11, and 13 years.

Contact me if you wish to view this photo.

Paul A.
I am a great great grandson of Pellegrino Bacigalupi, and am trying to work on the family tree for that side of the family. I believe, and this is from my father, that Pellegrino came over with his family (3rd wife) in 1894. You can look up his daughter Teresa on ellis Islands page and see a copy of the ships manifest and a picture of the boat they came over on. I have very little information beyond that, but there are apparently more Bacigalupi's living in Genoa to this day. My father also told me that there is a Pete in Louisiana who has a pretty good copy of that family tree.

Hello. My gg grandfather was Dominic Bacigalupi/o who was from Carasco, Genoa, Liguria, Italy. He was married to Benedetta Ravey. He also had a brother, Vincent, who settled in Maryland, a brother, Joseph, who settled in NYC, and a sister Rosa/Rosie Crovo who settled in Kentucky. My Dominic had a daughter, Rosa, who was born in 1865 in Baltimore, MD, but the family resided in Richmond, VA. I believe they left Richmond, perhaps during the Civil War and the burning of Richmond, and went to stay with the brother, Vincent, in Baltimore. By the 1870 census, they were back in Richmond, VA. If you'd like to exchange info, please contact me at sansob@aol.com. Thanks.

Good afternoon. I have found my Bacigalupo's in Richmond, VA in 1850. My gg grandfather was Dominic Bacigalupo, and his wife's name has been listed as Elizabeth, Betty. They had about 7 children, and their last child was born in Baltimore, MD abt 1865. In 1870, they were all back in Richmond. I believe they probably left Richmond during the Civil War, and went to live with one of Dominic's brothers in MD, and returned to Richmond sometime thereafter. Eventually, I found Dominic's wife and two of their sons, living in NYC on the 1880 census. One of them, John, was my paternal great grandfather. John's sons, John (my grandfather) and William, changed their surnames in the late 1920s, and each of them took a different surname!

I'm wondering if there may be a connection to the family your researching in MD. If you think so, I'd love to hear from you. Thank you.

Lyn,

Do you think that the Ciabatta Gorgio CROSISCA you mentioned is the one buried in the Calliope Cemetery,Central Queensland in 1911 as Geobatta George CROSISCA aged 77 years? If so, where did you get the info on the marriage between Angelo CROSISCA and Madelina BACIGALUPI? I ask because there is the possibility that I can verify this on a trip to Corsica if these two are in the family I am researching.
Thanks - Jann

Hi, I am from New Zealand, but my interest lies in Devon, England and Genoa, Italy.

My Giovanni/John was born in Genoa c1819-1823. I can not seem to find any info on him before his marriage in Devon, England to a Mary Ann Bartlett (widow) nee Fowler in 1849.

Apparantley he was aboard ship when he broke his leg and was hospitalised in Devon. The ship set sail leaving him behind.
I haven't found him in the 1841 census. So he must have arrived somewhere between 1841 and 1849.

In Devon he was a ropemaker and worked for Redway Ropewalk, he was also a Grocery Shop owner and he was an organ grinder. He often acted as an Interpreter to other Italians who brought grain from the Black sea. He apparently was a very fun loving character and a prankster. He was often known as Talley Jack to the locals.

He had 6 children to Mary Ann. Roselda 1850, Garomma/Jaromma 1851, Augustine (Agis) 1853, Mary Ann 1856, Tabitha 1858 and John 1862 all born in Exmouth, Devon.
Maybe some of these same names appear in other family trees.
He died in Devon 1899. His father's name was possibly Giovanni also.

He was a Naturalised British Subject in the 1881 census but have been unable to find the Naturalisation information.

I have tried to put a search out on this man in Genoa but need somewhere like a town to start looking, can anyone help me out. Has anyone got any links to this man. I would love to hear from you.

Very many thanks for reading this and I wish you all a successful search for yourselves.
Many thanks
Katie

Natale Bacigalupi was Santa Rosa's most prominent Italian-American during the first half of this century, the unofficial mayor of Little Italy in west Santa Rosa.
Born in Genoa, Bacigalupi was a young man when he arrived in Santa Rosa in 1882 with his family. He was smart and industrious, working with his three brothers as a fisherman at Bodega Bay and a laborer on a fruit ranch to earn the money to start his own grocery business.
By the time the Italian immigration was well under way in turn-of-the-century Sonoma County, Bacigalupi was established in business, owning a grocery and bakery at the foot of Third Street. Bacigalupi's store, along with Bertlani's grocery on Fourth Street, became the center of Santa Rosa's growing Italian community.
It was here that Italian workers from the tannery and truck gardens caught up on the neighborhood news not printed in the daily newspaper. Bacigalupi not only sold groceries, fresh baked bread and jug wine --- heavy duty red wine from the many small Italian wineries west of Santa Rosa Creek --- he also lent money to his paisani.
Along with the money came his sage advice about succeeding in business. Young men who wanted to buy a farm or get started in business came to Bacigalupi to get the seed money so they, too, could prosper in America.
The merchant of Third Street gave a boost to many Italian-Americans who could not have found financing anywhere else in Santa Rosa. Bacigalupi, who started lending money over the counter at the grocery store, later served as a director of the Bank of Italy, which became the Bank of America. His store also launched other well known Italian grocers such as the Traversos and Arrigonis, who started as clerks at Bacigalupi's, and later bought the store.
Bacigalupi who lived to be 101, also became a stone broker, marketing cobblestones and building blocks from the quarries around Santa Rosa. His various business enterprises made him wealth and, like most Italian immigrants of his day, he invested in land, acquiring four large ranches, vineyards and a small winery. Following Bacigalupi on the path to prosperity were the hundreds of Italian immigrants who owed him their start in a new land.
-Tim Tesconi
-----
Best of Sonoma County
Nat Bacigalupi was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1861, the son of John and Coletta Bacigalupi. He was 13 years old when he came to the United States with his mother and three sisters. They lived in San Francisco one year and then moved to Santa Rosa, where he resided for 55 years. He received part of his education in Italy and went to night school in Santa Rosa. His first job was fishing with his three brothers. Later, he worked in a fruit store and farmed. Still later he went to Bodega Bay and was in the fishing business for 6 years. He married Virginia Gardella in 1886. Cecilia, one of their ten children, married Joseph Imwalle, a local vegetable gardener. She is a graduate of San Jose State College and has taught in Arcata, Sebastopol and Stockton. She has three children. Her daughter Cecilia Mary is married to John L. Barham. Another daughter, Susan, who has recently published a book of poems, "Pansies and Seashells", is married to Brad Poling. Son Joseph is the owner of Imwalle Gardens, which has been in the same location on West 3rd Street for over a 100 years, growing and selling vegetables and flowers. Cecilia remembers riding in a surrey with her dad until the family bought their first car a 1917 Buick. At that time Montgomery Village was but an orchard, and Santa Rosa had only three grammar schools, one high school, and a business college.
-----
Hope these are the same Bacigalupi your related to.
My gg-gf was John Augustine Bacigalupo from Carasco, Italy. He arrived in the US 1841 - had brothers Dominic, Joseph, Vincent and a sister, Rosie or Rosa Crova. Dominic was supposed to have lived in VA, Joseph in NY and Vincent in Baltimore, MD. I think their father's name might have been Peter and possibly another brother or cousin named Thomas. Let me hear from you on this - I'll be happy to exchange information. Pat

My family history includes Bacigalupi's from chicago, this was my maternal great grandmother's last name. Father of family was Michael Bacigalupi. Wife Maria Fontana Bacigalupi. Family consisted of 4 girls and 4 boys. Girls: Amiela married name Casazza, Louise (my maternal great grandmother) married name Roncoli, Rose Bacigalupi and Mary married name Colseth.
My G-G-father was Giovanni Battista Bacigalupo and was born also in Carasco, where familly members live unti today, but they do not talk about family-stories. Carasco belongs to the church-cercle of Ognio (Province Genoa, Italy) where he was baptized, what I found in the church book of Ognio. The name of the church is "San Rocco". He had 11 or so brothers and sisters. You can find the name "Ognio" in some of those message boards concerning with Bacigalupo.

My G-Grandfather emigrated. Better: he was brought from a Padrone either first to London or first to Hamburg (Germany). In Hamburg he married Rosa Gattorna, who was also emigrated .

I do not know what you want to know exactly and I do not know very much about the ancestors Bcigalupo. Only this: The father of my G.B B. came possibly from Tribogna. Tribogna lies on the opposite hill of Ognio. I visited this very often. But this is not documented that he came really from Tribogna. Documented is that there are three main points where the name Bacigalupo is common: Tribogna, Ognio and Neirone.

Tribogna has its own church (and church books) and also Neirone.

The name of the father of "my" G.B.Bacigalupo was Tommaso and he married a certain Maria Giuffra, who came really from Tribogna , perhaps from Cassanessi (this is the name of my Email). But probably her ancestries came from Sicily, because there the name is common, as I saw in Internet..

I do not know when she or he was born. Tommaso could write his name on the marriage document, Maria Giuffra not. She made three crosses.

You wrote from your Augustine Bacigalupo, born in Carasco 1811. In my documents I have no Augustine.
Did you get more information in the meantime? If yes, I would be very interested to hear them.

Thank you very much Rosemarie Brieger

I believe I can help you. I am descended from the Bacigalupis in New Orleans, and I'm pretty sure Joseph is in the family tree. Unfortunately I am traveling for the holidays and my records are at home. I will be home after Jan. 6, at which time I will write back. Do you know any other information about Joseph, like the name of his parents, brothers and sisters, etc?

Re: Bacigalupi in New Orleans

Hi Candace,

Now that I'm home and can check my records, I see that I have some information that may help. but it's not definite that I have the same person you're asking about. Maybe between your info and mine, we can make a match. The following information was passed down from my grandmother.

I am descended from Pellegrino Bacigalupi, who came from Italy and settled in New Orleans by 1880. He married three times, and I am descended from his third wife, Louise Cervini. His first wife's last name was Laneri, and she had a son by another marriage named Joseph. I am not sure exactly when he was married to this first wife, but my information says that they settled in Pennsylvania, where she died, the victim of an outbreak of yellow fever. Pellegrino returned to Italy for a second wife and then returned to the U.S. to settle in New Orleans.

Pellegrino B. and his second wife, Teresa Baratini B., are listed in the 1880 census for New Orleans. In their household is a Joseph Bacigalupi, age 5. I would suppose that this Joseph is his first wife's son, now adopted by Pellegrino?

The only other information I have about this Joseph Bacigalupi is from a list of entries that my grandmother made from some New Orleans Directory. There is an entry for a Joseph Bacigalupi for the years 1879, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1889, and 1892. This seems consistent with your Joseph B. who died in 1892, although if they are the same person, he would have been 17/18 years old at death! You say that your Joseph was married and had a child by the time he died.

Well, that's all I''ve got on this shadowy figure in my family tree. Even if he's not the same as your Joesph B., writing this makes me realize that there is more to for me to learn about him. A strange thing is that he is never mentioned in the later obituaries for Pellegrino, or any of his other children by his later two wives.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or other information to share.

--Jorge

Hi Candace,

Thanks for the reply. I have never come across a definitive explanation of the Bacigalupi name. I can see how "kiss of the wolf" is a possibility. As for Joseph, I also realized after I wrote the last message that we probably don't have a match. But I do have another lead for you! As I was reviewing my grandmother's notes, I came across a page titled "Extra information of Bacigalupi in N. O." Sure enough, there is a Joseph Bacigalupi listed with the following info:

B. 1855. D. Jan. 11, 1892, age 37, from Daily Item (city) Jan. 11, 1892, p. 2, c. 5.

This still doesn't match the exact age of 42 that you mention, but the year of death does match. I believe the Daily Item is a New Orleans newspaper, so if you can track it down in an archive and look up page 2, column 5, you might find some more information.

Isn't genealogy fun? I certainly have enjoyed doing it, when I have the spare time. Good luck with your search.

Jorge

Recently I discovered that there may be a connection between the TN Bacigalupis and mine....Dominic Bacigalupi, VA.

John Augustine Bacigalupo (b 1811 Carasco, Genoa, married to Amanda Weaver in Augusta, GA in 1847 before moving to Nashville, TN) had brothers Vincent (Baltimore, MD), Dominic (Richmond, VA) and Joseph (NY...d. Boston). There was also a sister, Rosa/Rosie.

Dominic Bacigalupo, b. abt 1819/Italy is my gg gf. He was married to Elizabeth/Bettie (maiden name unknown) b. 1827/Italy. They settled in the Richmond, VA area. One of their children, John, born abt 1861 in VA is my g gf, and he left VA sometime after 1870, and moved to NYC with his mother, Bettie, and brother, Louis.

John and Louis had several siblings: Caroline, Charles, Augustin, Andrew (all born VA) and a sister, Roselana, born 1865 in MD.

If this matches with any information my fellow Bacigalupis may have, please contact me at Sansob@aol.com.

I tried to email Ed Bacigalupi at ebacigal@ix.netcom.com, but my note was returned "undeliverable."

Thanks again.
Do you have any relatives who lived in the Basque country in Spain? I think that my last name was changed to Bacigalupe after a few Bacigalupos or such immigrated to Spain, but I do not know when this happened.

Hi,
I think the John C. I'm looking for his father was Charles and his mothers name was Madelina or Madeline. Charles was born abt. 1840 in Italy. I think Charles had a brother John w/ daughters named Louisa and Edith. John C. had brothers named Joseff, Eujenio, with other siblings, still trying to figure out there names. Charles Bacigalupi was in a Veterans Hostipal in 1920's in Yount Co in Napa CA. He was 80.
Any help with this connection would be great.
Kathryne
