Hi Shirley and Andie,
We are all descended from Jann Albert Harms-Backer of Nesse and Arle, Ostfriesland, Germany. He should have been just Jann Albert Harms according to the naming traditions, but Backer got tacked on in the early 1800's because he was a master baker. He died on 22 Feb 1847 in Arle, leaving 8 children ranging in age from 6 to 24. He also had 3 ch from a previous marriage, but they were of age, married maybe. The 8 children were:

1. Harm Backer 13 Jan 1824, 2. Neeske Backer (f) 1 Dec 1825, 3. Johannes J. Backer (my ancestor) 21 Mar 1828, 4. Hilke Backer 8 Sep 1830, 5. Tönjes Janssen Backer 18 Mar 1833, 6. Jan Harms Backer 1 Oct 1835, 7. Gerdjen Backer 25 Aug 1838, and 8. Gretje Johanna Backer 13 Feb 1841.

Seven children and his wife Caroline Sophia (Janssen) Backer immigrated to the US in four groups:
1. Harm and his wife Maria arr. NYC 30 Jul 1851 on the "Charlotte" (his occupation is listed as baker); 2. Johannes, mother Sophia and Gretje arr. NYC 19 Jun 1855 on the "Kosmos". (Johannes and Gretje would marry a brother and sister, Etje and Siebelt Folkers, and travel to Benton Co., IA together. Brother Jan would marry yet another Folkers from the same family; 3. Neeske, "Subers" and Tonje arr. NYC 11 Jun 1855 on the "Farvinta" Subers is a mystery - she is the right age to be Hilke, but is not, because: 4. Helene Bocker arr. NYC 26 Oct 1857 on the "Mercury". Gerdtje must have died 1847-1857 in Germany, unless she is the mysterious Subers. All of the arrival dates above match up with the children's stated immigration dates in the 1900 census and later. I have some family information on all seven children, and ancestral data in Germany which will be posted on WorldConnect shortly. I would love to get any family information on your two lines, and scans of any photos, clippings, etc. you would care to share.

I am slowly working my way through the attachment. There is an enormous amount of work summarized in this document. Thank you for being willing to share it.

As the researcher surmised, Peter DeVries's birth year WAS 1862. There is a census reference to another DeVries child named John, of whom I was not previouisly aware.

Hilke, Cassen and four sons are buried at Lutheran Cemetery west of Peoria with other relatives. To my knowledge, none of the DeVries sons ever married, which seems unusual. The two daughters, Sophia and Anna, did marry.

I'm still working on which Backer, Jan or Johannes, is the John Backer who was born in 1835. I believe John Backer's daughter, known as Sina, married a Harms in Peoria. As your document points out, there are other Folkers/Harms/Backer connections. Would like to exchange info and compare notes at your convenience -- jgerber@wclv.com.

Ispsem: What amazing work you've done. It will take me a while to digest all this information, which obviously took some time to compile. This bears out subsequent history; Hilka's daughters' names were Sophia and Johanna. I may have some information about Gretje's marriage, etc.; I will check. My mother always told me that the Backers, Harmses and Folkers in Peoria were all related by marriage.

The .ged file didn't open; if you wouldn't mind re-sending, send it to jgerber@wclv.com. Would be glad to reciprocate with post-emigration info from Peoria about these families if you're interested.

My g-grandmother, Anna Mabel Backer, was an orphan in Iowa. A long and winding road got enough data to have some work done in Germany, which I just got back. The results led me to you. Hilka was born 8 Sep 1830 in Arle, Ostfriesland, Germany. Her siblings were: Harm, Neeske, Johannes J., Tönjes, Jan Harms, Gertjen, and Gretje Johanna. Their father, Jann Albert Harms-Backer, died in 1847. Jan Harms came to America first, in 1854. He was followed by a trio: Johannes J., Gretje, and the mother, Sophia Caroline Janssen, in 1855. Hilka came in 1857. Amazingly, it appears that three of the children, Johannes J., Gretje and Jan Harms all married three siblings of the Folkert Siebelts Folkers family. Rather than go on and on, I am attaching a .ged file. Several generations of Backers and Folkers in Ostfriesland are there, as well as the original data in the notes. I don't yet know of a Harms connection in the states, but there is one in Germany.

I still believe the latter Frank and Carrie in the 1900 Census are the children of George Van Dyke and Frances Backer from NJ.

Mike in TX

NJ PA Backers

On the 1850 Luzerne County, PA census the following Backers were living with a Charles Barney: Johnson V.(22), Elizabeth(25) Rachel(20). Johnson remained in Luz. Co. married Mary Etta Toomey had children Mary Elizabeth, Emma Retta, Benjamin H. and Johnson R. Baker. They used the last name Baker from the late 1870s.
In J.V.'s obit in 1900 it states he was born in Newton, NJ, coming to PA as a young boy. He was survived by sisters Mrs. John Ringlemann and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoagland of NJ. Perhaps relatives back in NJ arranged marriages for the Backer girls.
Latest intriguing discovery: in the front of the Baker cemetery plot in Luz. Co. is a stone that reads "Jacob, son of John Polly Backer, died 1847, 12 years old". The cemetery association has no info on this. Possibly the stone pre-dates the establishment of this cemetery (i.e. the tombstone was moved to their plot from a private burial ground, etc.). Need proof that John Polly were J.V.'s parents. There's a Newton in Sussex Co., NJ but unfortunately Newton variations turn up in several other New Jersey counties!
A Hoagland researcher has data on an Elizabeth Backer of the right age who married a Wm. Hoagland. Her parents' names were John Backer Mary Horne. Since Polly was a nickname for Mary back then this looks like it could be my family but I need to tie it all together.
One other odd clue: per 2 brief newspaper mentions of J.V.'s daughter Emma Retta's death in 1901 at the age of 38, she had been spending the previous 2 months with relatives in Missouri died in Texarkana, Arkansas...

Please include me in the mail loop, because this is obviously the branch that conects Europe to Africa! My father is brother to Kym's dad and he dropped the Liot from Backer before I was born, but it appears on his first Canadian Passport! You may want to expand your search from Backer's Dutch origin into Suriname, or Dutch Guyana. Kym, didn't Granddad's people come up from there?

Hi Pattie,

My name is Kym Liot Backer, and I'm from Guyana, formerly "Guiana". My family is the only Backer family in the entire country spelled this way, and Liot Backer is our family name, although my grandad (Norman) dropped the Liot and the family now goes by Backer. Grandad Norman was born, I believe in 1913, and would probably be a grandson or great grand of Samuel. I am truly interested in this, so please email me with any questions or information you may have on our genealogy. I have always known the family originated in the Netherlands, I suppose we are the Caribbean branch!

Backer''s of Mendham, Peapack, Chester, and Hunterdon County (Liz Backer Melick''s - Backer''s)

Hello Fellow Backer Family Researchers,

In particular, Hello Liz, I was delighted to find your posts here. I obtained a complimentary guest membership for the next week or so. I decided to do some searches on the Backer name. I joined the Rootsweb.com "Backer" e-mail list a month ago and just received the first posting tonight. So, I got to thinking about searching Ancestry.com's databases.

Did you know I've done a bunch of research on the Backer's? I had researched a lot on my side (the Ryan's) that I wanted to round it out for Kate and Bess, (my daughters, your nieces - so other's can follow) and get some research done on their mother's side (your sister). My research at Morristown Library has been fruitful. However, I haven't touched the Backer research and papers in quite awhile. This will certainly spur me on to starting it up again.

I'll gather up my research and paper's and get back to you Liz with information. I'll also try to post the details here for other's before my guest membership runs out, in case I don't join Ancestry.com.

I was just at the point in the research that I was convinced your Mendham/Peapack (Chester?) Backers came from the Hunterdon County Backers you mentioned. I'm hoping they can be traced back to the late 1600's Ambrose Backer that was one of the original Swedish settlers along the Deleware River. But that is getting ahead of myself and might be foolish to even think it. The New Jersey Censuses have been very helpful in filling in the missing pieces. Morristown has a good collection.

I look forward to exchanging information and pushing the Backer research back (no pun intended) further into the ancestry.

Bye for now,
Jim Ryan
islandeady@tellurian.net

I came across a Vera M. Nelson b 1901 in Royal Oak, MI. Orphaned young and adopted by the Backers; father PETER BACKER mother MARGARET SORENSON. This was in a Michigan Vital Records 1800-1917 match pulled up on Ancestry.com when I was looking for my grandmother. I was looking at Vera M. Nelson as a possibility since info she gave on a social security application is not panning out.

Best regards
Deborah Eagan Stevens

Appolonia BACHER (b1729)

I believe that my ggggg-grandmother was the Appolonia BACHER (b1729), who is listed as an emigrant child in the household of Thomas and Maria BACHER on the Second Salzburger Transport aboard the Engish Vessel, Prince of Wales, Captained by George Dunbar...The name is spelled BACHER on the original listing but sometimes rendered Backer/Bakker/Baker in later Ebenezer Records...The Second Transport arrived on 29 December 1734.

Grandmother Appolonia was married to Grandfather Hans Ulrich Gyger, an emigrant child from the Canton of St. Galen, in Switzerland, but we have not heretofore been privy to her surname...According to HuxFord's Wiregrass publications, Grandfather Ulrich was a Revolutionary Soldier and his surname was incorrectly spelled Kegar in one land grant document, then Anglicized as Geiger/Giger/Gigger/Gieger and sometimes Grigger because of the harsh gutteral Switzerdeutsch dialect which they spoke.

Will correspond with other researchers who may have additional information on this family's surname.

I forgot to say that one of the children of James Crawford Neilson and Anna Albertina Backer was J. Crawford Neilson, a famous architect in Baltimore. There is a medallion in the Montgomery Neilson Collection in the Maryland Historical Society which was inherited by Albertus Backer in 1740 and later by Albert Neilson. Another one of Anna's children was named Albertus Backer Neilson. He was a lawyer in Baltimore and went by "Albert". His brother, J. Crawford Neilson, the architect , also had a son named Albert.

Pattie

I'm looking for information about Albertus Backer. He was Director-General of Demerara (Guyana) 1789-1793, after it was restored to the Netherlands. His daughter Anna Albertina Backer married James Crawford Neilson, the eldest brother of my GGG grandfather, in Exeter, England in 1809. James Crawford Neilson was born in Donegal, Ireland and settled in Baltimore, as did his mother and siblings. He travelled to the West Indies, England , and other places because he was a merchant. He was lost in the Gulf of Mexico in 1822 and Anna took her 4 children to Belgium to live with her mother until her mother's death, and then she returned to Baltimore.

I am also looking for information about Samuel B. Liot Backer of "Guiana" who is mentioned in the will of Anne Jane Neilson (a sister of James Crawford Neilson who lived in Baltimore) as the husband of her niece Mary Jane.

Thanks,

Pattie

Kym,

I was very glad to see your message! I thought that perhaps Samuel was related to Albertus Backer, maybe a son, since Albertus was director general of Demerara and also commander of Esiquibo two times. However, if Liot Backer was Samuel's last name, maybe that is not the case. There is a "Montgomery Neilson Collection" at the Maryland Historical Society which is a collection about J. Crawford Neilson and his family and Priestford, his farm in Harford Co., MD. There is a medallion listed in the collection which was inherited by Albertus Backer in 1740 and then by Albert Neilson (either the architect's brother Albert or his son Albert). There are journals from the farm and one journal listed which was written in Dutch? Anna Albertina Backer Neilson applied for the right to own land in Maryland from the legislature when she returned to Baltimore from Europe, and they did pass a special act giving her this right.

I contacted a descendant of Jane Crawford Neilson's brother in England. Jane Crawford Neilson was the mother of James Crawford Neilson Sr. Her brother was Dr. James Crawford in Ballyshannon, Donegal, Ireland (where Jane came from). This descendant had some letters written by Charles Neilson, son of the architect J.Crawford Neilson, around the time of World War I. In one of the letters he says that his grandmother, Anna Albertina Backer, took her 4 children to Belgium to live with her mother until her mother died, when his father was about 5.
I don't know anything about the Backer ancestors in the Netherlands or Belgium. I'm so glad to hear from a descendant of Samuel's in Guyana. If you are a descendant of Samuel and Mary Jane Neilson, then you would be interested in Mary Jane's ancestry and I do have a lot about the Crawfords. I will contact you at your e-mail address. Perhaps we could contact some Backers in the Netherlands.

Pattie

Karla,
I have found out from church records (St. Paul's) in Baltimore that Mary Jane Neilson, who married Samuel B. Liot Backer of Guyana (this is listed in a will), was the daughter of James Crawford Neilson from Donegal, Ireland and Albertina Anna Backer, daughter of Albertus Backer. So if you are descended from Samuel Liot Backer of Guyana and his wife Mary Jane Neilson, you are descended from Albertus Backer, a governor of Demerara (Guyana), and also from Jane Crawford and Nathaniel Neilson, from Donegal. Since Mary Jane was the granddaughter of a Backer and married a Liot Backer, it is possible that she and Samuel were cousins. Of course he could have had more than one wife. Mary Jane was the sister of J. Crawford Neilson, a well-known architect in Baltimore.

Pattie

Re: BACKERs of Missouri

I am a descendant of Johannes Engel Becker of Burbach, Germany through his daughter Katherine. She married Jacob Frank, who is Matilda Frank's grandmother.
It looks like several members of the Backer/Becker clan moved to Callaway county Missouri at the same time (abt 1852). I would love to talk to other members of the Backer/Becker family of Burbach and Fulton. Please contact me if you would like to exchange information. sfrank78 (a t) yahoo.
Backer Family ties to Europe

Any information on the background of the Backer Family from Saskatchewan and the ties to Europe would be appreciated. Our research indicates that the family may be from a small village between Stanislau and Neudorf in the old Historical area of Die deutschen Siedlungen in Galizien bis. The Arndt family side may be from the Luov area. A historical map of the area appears to have been authored by gezeichnet von Rudolf Unterschutz. Historical photos of Great Grande parents show a man in Milatary dress mounted upon a horse and windmills .
