Hi Kay,

my John Backman is from the north of Sweden so I don't think that they are related in any way. In the census in Sweden for 1970 I found 4161 Bäckman so it is a pretty common name. Bäck in Swedish means stream or creek. My ancestor got his name from the village he was born in Björnlandsbäck, Bearlandcreek.

If you are interested you can read about the allotment system in Sweden on this webpage http://www.algonet.se/~hogman/slsoldat_eng.htm
It explains why they changed the names on soldiers and boatsmen in the army.
I am not sure about your John Backman, but wondered where in
Sweden he came from. My great grandfather is Jon Peter Backman born in Grinnerod, Gotesborg-Bohus, Sweden in 1851.
He came to Utah and married Matilda Anderson. His father and
grandfather were both from Resterod, Gotesborg-Bohus, Sweden and I have his greatgrandfathers name but only that he was from Sweden. I wonder if they are related, their last name was originally Svenson, but when one of them joined the Swedish navy they had to change it to something else because there were too many Swensons, so they changed it to Backman - we don't know why??? I think it means "by the river or lake" ??? Let me know if anything rings a bell with you. Thanks, Kay Caruso

I am looking for information about Johan Bäckman (in the US John Backman) born May 8, 1882 in Sweden. He emigrated in 1903. I have found him in the census for Duluth, St Louis, Minnesota in 1910, 1920 and 1930 with his wife Hulda Margareta b about 1882. They seem to have two children, Edward b about 1913 and Elisabeth b about 1915. I have found that he dies December 19, 1967 in Duluth. I am looking for any information I can get about this family, obit.

Do you have given names and some dates? Maybe their emigration and more can be found on a Swedish database.

It is important to find the parish name since records were kept in the parish and not in the village. Gumboda is a by (village) in Norsjö parish in Västerbotten län (county) and is also a village in Nysätra parish in Västerbotten county.

Västerbotten county is definitely in the northern part of Sweden.

http://www.algonet.se/~hogman/swe_counties_map_eng.htm

If the spelling of Gumboda is off a bit, there are other possibilities.

Does "from" mean they were born in Gumboda or does it mean they just lived in Gumboda at some point?

I am not related.

Judy

BACKMAN NAME - LOOKING FOR A ROSE ...

I was browsing and found that you do research regarding my maiden name. My father was born Richard Anthony (Backman), Enos to a nursing student (so we have been told) studying @ Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge MA. His father (who was Anthony Enos) never married the mother (Rose Backman the student)therefore when my Dad was put in school, he had to take his Moms name "Backman". All I can find out is that her name was Rose Backman and she was born in Halifax Canada. My Dad was born in 1936 in the Mt. Auburn Hospital and Rose went back to Canada. Have you ever see this name (Rose) under Backman when you are researching. I have wondered alot and wouldn't even know where to start. When my dad was living, we went to look up the Birth Record in Cambridge MA and his certificate was sealed and they would not even give him a copy. Any info you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lost cousins

I'm hoping someone can help me track down some long-lost cousins. Their mother Betty Baughman of Osterberg, PA (maybe Mount Union, PA) was married to my uncle Robert May of East Freedom, PA. They had four children: Joe, Bobby, Georgie, and Susie, all of whom would have been born @1945-1950. Betty and Bob divorced at some point and Betty eventually remarried an Italian and they settled in Wisconsin. The new husband adopted all four children. I think that Joe might be dead and that Bobby is a physician. Georgie served in the Army during the 60s. That's all I know. I hope someone might have some information about them. Thanks much.

I'm doing some genealogical work and am related to the Backman family from Baltimore. The family probably migrated there from Germany near the middle of the 19th century. Any information about where they migrated from and what trade they pursued would be welcome.

Many thanks,
Denis

My great-aunt, Elizabeth Hummel, whom I did not know because she died fairly young, married Victor Backman many, many years ago in Baltimore. I think he was some kind of printer. She had a German background; her father migrated from Bavaria to Baltimore about 1850 or so. They were German Lutherans.

The Backmans had no biological children, but adopted a girl, whom they named Elizabeth. They were a fairly prosperous family, but young Elizabeth married a John Seiler, an alcoholic, had a number of children, and fell on hard times. Victor and his wife are buried in a mausoleum in Lorraine Cemetery in west Baltimore.

Denis jd-glover@comcast.net

Backman from Sweden in 1850s. I was told by Elroy H (my grandfather) that Charles owned a gas station in Glen Cove. I contacted with Doris maybe 10 yrs ago, she was out in mid west at that time.

ALMA Theresia Persdotter (or PERSSON) was born 9th February 1905 in Sweden in Stiby parish in the landscape Skåne (Scania). She went to America when she was about 18 years old to Detroit and married after a few months a worker Oscar Backman. In 1934 and 1944 she lived in Chicago. She died in Florida in March 1970 (Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida). She could have had a son born I Sweden just before she left for the US (maybe named Allan).

In USA she got two sons: TED (or EDWARD) BACKMAN who could hav bin killed or wounded in WWII and OSCAR Lennart BACKMAN , born 6th of July 1930 and died 14th of January 2001 in Newberry, Michegan. I don’t know anything about Ted/Teddy/Edward. Oscar married 1973 Kelly Weaner in Newberry, but they didn’t have any children.

Does anyone know anything about this family? Did Ted or Oscar L. have any children?

Alma was my wife’s grandfather’s sister.

Please contact me: Kvernby@home.se

Jan Kvernby
Sweden

I am looking for information on my father's family (Backman). I can't seem to get back any farther than Joseph Bernard Backman who lived in New York at least for a while. He was the father of my grandfather, William James Backman born in 1898. If you have any information that might help me, I'd appreciate it. We do know that the family came from Germany and we think the spelling of the last name was changed.

My name is Kristal Backman King. I would be the great grandaughter of Frank Eugene Backman, grandaughter of Loyall Backman and daughter of Bruce Backman. Bruce is the brother of Karl Eugene Backman. My parents divorced when I was an infant. Any information I can obtain on this line of Backman's would be appreciated. Thus far I know that Frank Backman (BeBe) married Abigail Barchard and had a son Loyall.
I also know that Fred Lanoix married Marie Malenfant and had a daughter Agnes Lanoix.
Agnes married Loyall and had Bruce, (my father) Karl and Gail.
