Looking for any leads for documentation pertaining to Mary Frances Bagby, daughter of Willis Bagby and Mary “Polly” Thompson and her husband, Jesse England Lewis, son of Charles Nelms Lewis and Louisa Ann England after the birth of their first son Charles H. Lewis in 1861.
Mary was born about 1842 in Lewis County, KY (based on her age in the 1850 and 1860 Kentucky Census for Lewis County, in which she and her younger sister Nancy E. Bagby are found in the household of their sister, Catherine S. (Bagby) McAllister, whose husband, John became their guardian after the death of their parents in 1849.
Jesse England Lewis was born about 1837 (based on his age in the 1850 KY Census for Carter County). They married on December 19, 1860 in Lewis County, KY, and had at least two children, Charles H. Lewis, b. September 9, 1861 in Lewis County, KY and Robert Franklin Lewis, b. November 9, 1868, in Missouri. The birth of Charles H. Lewis is documented by the Lewis County Register of Births, found on microfilm, which shows: “September 9, 1861, Charles H. Lewis, father, Jesse E. Lewis, mother, Mary F. Bagby.”
Son, Robert Franklin Lewis, was born in Missouri (according to Census records for 1900, 1910 and 1920). He married Inez Coney Kitchen and they had four children. One of his sons, Jesse Kitchen Lewis, was Assistant Attorney General for Kentucky and in 1955 was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor.
I have not been able to find any documentation for Jesse or wife, Mary and their children after the record for the birth of son Charles H, until son Robert is found in the 1900 KY Census. This includes finding Jesse in the 1860 Census, or any of the family in the 1870 and 1880 Census. The only potential documentation pertaining to Mary Frances (Bagby) Lewis after the birth of Charles I have found is a listing in the Kentucky Death Records 1911-2000, found on Rootsweb.com showing: "Lewis, Mary B. age 82, died Carter Co., residence, Grayson, 02-23-1935, Vol 7, Certificate #3320.”
A singular reference to Mary and Jesse is found in the work: “Early families of eastern and southeastern Kentucky and their descendants, by William C. Kozee” published in 1961, which mentions them on page 438.
Any help or leads will be greatly appreciated - thank you.
