Surnames: Bagby Thompson Sprague Spragg Compton
Hello Kinfolk! I'm Brian Bagby in Alton, IL, near St Louis, MO. A couple weeks ago, I "googled" a relative and discovered links to sites such as this, and thought I might try digging a little deeper. (How deep a hole will I dig?)
My father did a lot of family genealogy research in the 1960s and 70s when I was young. He seemed especially interested to take it back to England or thereabouts. He's let me borrow his fairly large pile of notes, records, etc. to sift through. Birth, death, marriage records; relevant state county's census material copied by hand; charts of county name evolution through time; correspondence with relatives; etc. etc. My dad's still here, but he has trouble getting around and his memory ain't what it used to be, so he might not be able to help much otherwise.
He had traced our line back to Robert and Fanny, though he thought the Robert might be Maj. Robert B. Bagby. (I've discovered different via the internet). He was also looking at Thompson, Sprague/Spragg, Compton, and others.
Briefly (elaboration for another time), here's our Bagby line:
Me.
My father, Wilbur Eugene b.1921
Eugene McMillen b.1900
James Willis b.1869
James Thompson b.1837
Willis b.1803
Robert and Fanny
and so on....
I vaguely remember (9-10 years old?)that on a driving vacation to Niagara Falls, we stopped in Lexington to visit "William R." (William Rardin Bagby). Probably visited the Bagby Mausoleum. I seem to recall he had a rather elegant home (compared to our 5 room ranch!)
Anyway, we'll see where this takes me....
A question: Might these books/materials be useful in my search? (Or simply interesting?)
William C. Kozee
"Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky"
"Pioneer Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky"
William Murlin Creasy
"Record of the Bagby and allied families" 1933
"Genealogy of Bagby and allied families" 1937
I know these last two are out of print. Could copies be made?
Regards,
Brian Bagby
