The Alfred Bagby you are referencing is, no doubt, the Reverend Alfred Bagby, DD. He is the author of the "Bagby Family Tree (see a portion of my branch in the attached file) in 1897. His son revised it in 1923. Rev. Bagby and his wife are buried in the churchyard of Mattaponi (Matta - pon - EYE) Baptist Church in King and Queen County, Virginia. I have more information on Rev. Bagby but I have just moved and it isn't at hand right now. I also have the negative of the family tree. Because it is an 18" x 23" negative it is VERY expensive to copy. I know of only one place to get it printed and they last quoted me $50 to do it. However, if you want a print, let me know.

I know nothing of English Bagby but I do have an email address of a John English Bagby of Richmond, VA. You may try to reach him at Bagby_John@prc.com. If you have trouble reaching him let me know as I will try to track him down when I am next in Richmond.
Dick Bagby

Hi Sherri,
I've been admiring your bagby.org site the past few days. Very impressive. Thanks for sharing your work.

My dad's papers has a copy of an email you sent my sister, and I saw her post to you on (I think it was) this board. I looked at your Gov. A.P. Bagby page and it seems you might already have more than "unknown pages 95-99"?? --- "The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography".

I found, through a Wikipedia article on this book, that it is available online, at least several of the many volumes published.
http://books.google.com/books?id=tt4DAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA428&a...

This is Vol 10 (1900), see p.428

The article says these biographies aren't necessarily scholarly, so use the info with that in mind.

Brian

Brian,

In response to your question about the books by Kozee and Creasy as they might pertain to your specific family line, the short answer is Kozee a little and Creasy not so much. I offer this input as a Bagby family researcher who also descends from Robert and Fanny Bagby, through a brother of your Willis Bagby, William Bagby – and as a researcher who has made use of both books you cite in my research. I also some time ago corresponded with your sister Barbara.

In response to the question posed by Sherri Bagby, yes, this is the same Wilber Bagby that you ask about.

Though you sister, I am somewhat familiar with your father’s research and I am more the happy to share my research and answer any questions you may have for which I might have answers.

Best regards,

Dan Dunham
Los Angeles, CA
dmd4yrls “at” sbcglobal “dot” net

Welcome to the Bagby list and to new beginnings.

I've been trying to find information about the following notation on Bagby.org where I've published 12 generations of Bagby genealogy.

The notation is as follows:

Source: copied from papers sent to John Robert Bagby of Mountain View, Arkansas, excerpt from book "unknown" pages 95-99, sent by way of letter from Wilbur E. Bagby, addressed to Donald Bagby, 609 Lincoln, East Alton, Illinois, dated January 13, 1966, copied to John Robert Bagby, Mountain View, Arkansas.

You may view and search the research at www.bagby.org and let me know if you see a connection of your lineage to the reports.

Sherri Schaefer [Bagby]
Bagby Admin
www.bagby.org

Introduction and Books Questions

Hello Kinfolk! I'm Brian Bagby in Alton, IL, near St Louis, MO. A couple weeks ago, I "googled" a relative and discovered links to sites such as this, and thought I might try digging a little deeper. (How deep a hole will I dig?)

My father did a lot of family genealogy research in the 1960s and 70s when I was young. He seemed especially interested to take it back to England or thereabouts. He's let me borrow his fairly large pile of notes, records, etc. to sift through. Birth, death, marriage records; relevant state county's census material copied by hand; charts of county name evolution through time; correspondence with relatives; etc. etc. My dad's still here, but he has trouble getting around and his memory ain't what it used to be, so he might not be able to help much otherwise.

He had traced our line back to Robert and Fanny, though he thought the Robert might be Maj. Robert B. Bagby. (I've discovered different via the internet). He was also looking at Thompson, Sprague/Spragg, Compton, and others.

Briefly (elaboration for another time), here's our Bagby line:
Me.
My father, Wilbur Eugene b.1921
Eugene McMillen b.1900
James Willis b.1869
James Thompson b.1837
Willis b.1803
Robert and Fanny
and so on....

I vaguely remember (9-10 years old?)that on a driving vacation to Niagara Falls, we stopped in Lexington to visit "William R." (William Rardin Bagby). Probably visited the Bagby Mausoleum. I seem to recall he had a rather elegant home (compared to our 5 room ranch!)

Anyway, we'll see where this takes me....

A question: Might these books/materials be useful in my search? (Or simply interesting?)

William C. Kozee
"Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky"
"Pioneer Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky"

William Murlin Creasy
"Record of the Bagby and allied families" 1933
"Genealogy of Bagby and allied families" 1937

I know these last two are out of print. Could copies be made?

Regards,
Brian Bagby

Dan,
Thanks for the prompt response. My ancestor Thomas Mumford is shown in at least two Illinois censuses (1850 Schulyer Co., 1880 Pulaski Co.) with his wife Mary (b. about 1832). In these census records, Mary lists Kentucky as her birthplace and that of both her parents. I recently discovered Mary's maiden name was Bagby through the online Illinois Statewide Marriage Index (shows Mary Bagby marrying Thomas Mumford in Schuyler Co in August of 1848).

In the 1850 Schuyler Co., IL census Mary (Bagby) Mumford and Thomas Mumford are listed with their 6 month old daughter. They are living next door to the family of Alexander Bilderback (b. about 1806), two doors down from the family of John Bilderback (b. about 1819) and three doors down from the family of William Bilderback (b. about 1802). This William Bilderback is listed with wife Frances and children. It's this Frances (Bagby) Bilderback that I found listed at Bagby.org. Therefore, I'm trying to figure out the connection between my Mary (Bagby) Mumford and Frances (Bagby) Bilderback. My hope is that understanding that connection may lead me to the parents of my Mary.

Additionally, in the 1880 Pulaski County, IL census, Thomas and Mary (Bagby) Mumford are living down the street from the family of Isaac Bagby (b. 1842) and Adolphous Bagby (b. 1851). These Bagby men seem a bit young to be brothers of my Mary, but I'm assuming again that's some family connection.

I hope that information helps. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for your time!

Amy Heltzer

As a follow-up to my earlier posting pertaining to Bagby’s, Steamboats and the Ohio River, I would like to point out three website images pertaining to the steamboats owned and operated by Bagby’s. Respectful of the copyrights of these website owners, I provide the URLs for the images. While I do happen to own an original Fannie Dugan RPPC image of the Fannie Dugan, which is identical to the image shown on the link, it is not this specific image with the added typewritten note.

From the Northwestern State University of Louisiana; River Steamboats-Dellmon Collection; Cammie G. Henry Research Center, I reference the photos of the steamers Fannie Dugan and Handy. The latter steamer was owned by Willis S. Bagby and was in the local trade from Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky where Willis was the wharf master.

Fannie Dugan Image
http://www.nsula.edu/watson_library/steamers/pages/Fannie%20...

Handy Image
http://www.nsula.edu/watson_library/steamers/pages/Handy-912...

Finally, from Boats on the River at Northern Kentucky Views:

Fannie Dugan Wharfboat Image, Warsaw Kentucky
http://www.nkyviews.com/gallatin/gallatin425.htm
Amy,

I would be more than happy to try an help you find the info you are seeking. However, quickly checking my research files, I do not find a Mary Bagby married to a Thomas Mumford - but that does not mean I do not have the info - just that I will need some more details from you. You state that you believe that this Mary Bagby is related to Frances (Bagby) Bilderback. Can you explain the basis for this belief? While, Frances (Bagby) Bilderback had a younger sister and four nieces named Mary Bagby, none match the birth year of 1832. Frances herself had a daughter named Mary F. (Bilderback) Orahood.

Any further details pertaining to the Mary you seek will be welcome and I will use the info to try and help you with your search.

In the meantime, I will see what I can find that might be a connection.

Best regards,

Dan Dunham
dmd4yrls@sbcglobal.net

Amy:

Thanks for the additional information and I see where you got the idea for the connection. I am quite familiar with Alexander and John Bilderback who are half-brothers to William H Bilderback who married Frances Bagby - from his father's second marriage. Further, John Bilderback's second wife was Cynthia Waring, my second great grand aunt. Her parents Basil Augustus Waring and Sarah L. Thompson, are my 3rd great grandparents. Cynthia (Waring) Bilderback's sister Eliza Waring married William Bagby (and they are my 2nd great grandparents) and Sarah L (Thompson)Waring' sister Mary Thompson, married Willis Bagby, my William Bagby's and Frances (Bagby) Bilderback's oldest brother.

Isaac and Aldolphous Bagby are also familiar to me from my research - but they are not closely related to the family of Frances (Bagby) Bilderback. I will have to do some digging through my research files as my info on Isaac and Aldolphous Bagby and their families is not in my main research files. The Mary Bagby you are seeking my well be connected to them. One of their descendants, Loy Bagby was a long-time post master in Pulaski County.

If I have additional questions, I will get back to you.

Best regards,

Dan Dunham

George P Bagby, 1809-1889 KY IL

Because of numerous tangential connections to the primary Lewis County, Kentucky Bagby family line of my research, I am looking for leads or input regarding the parents of George P. Bagby, born November 21, 1809, Kentucky; died March 1, 1893, Pulaski County, Illinois.

George first married Rehna Bilderback, daughter of William and Ruanna McAllister Bilderback, on June 8, 1830 in Lewis County, Kentucky (source: William M. Talley, Ph.D., Talley's Northeastern Kentucky Papers, (American Reference Publishers, Fort Worth, Texas, 1971), Rehna Bilderback m. George Bagby 8 June 1830). Rhena Bilderback was the half-niece of Francis (Bagby) Bilderback, by her marriage to William H. Bilderback, October 12, 1809, Lewis County, Kentucky. Francis being the daughter of Robert Bagby, Sr. and his wife Fanny.

George P. Bagby and Rhena Bilderback had one documented son, George Washington Bagby, born March 4, 1844, died September 20, 1917, buried Concord Cemetery, near Olmstead, Pulaski County, Illinois. It is speculated that they also had a daughter, Sarah F. Bagby, born about 1842, married John McNulty, November 17, 1891, Alexander County, Illinois.

Other researchers have reported that Rhena Bilderback Bagby died in 1850 in Kentucky. (Source: Pulaski County, Illinois 1819-1987; Compiled by Pulaski County History Book Committee; Turner Publishing Co.; 1987, page 74; “Ruah Anna Bilderback ... died June 28, 1850 in Bardwell, Carlyle Co., Kentucky”). Unfortunately, Bardwell was not established until 1879 and in 1850 the area where Bardwell exists was part of Ballard County, Kentucky in 1850.

George P. Bagby second married Margaret Littlejohn, daughter of Daniel and Cynthia Ann (Thompson) Littlejohn, about 1860 in Illinois. Margaret Littlejohn was the niece of Willis Bagby of Lewis County, Kentucky through his marriage to Mary “Polly” Thompson, twin sister of Cynthia Ann Thompson. Willis was the oldest child of Robert and Fanny Bagby of Lewis County, Kentucky. Margaret Littlejohn was born December 24, 1831 in Kentucky.

George Washington Bagby, son of George P. Bagby married Sarah E. Bagby on January 1, 1867 in Pulaski County, Illinois. Sarah Bagby was born about 1848 in Kentucky. Who Sarah’s parents were is unknown. They had three known children: Raleigh, b. about 1867; Ella, b. September 1868; and Freddie, b. about 1871. Ella married Peter Harmon, March 15, 1889 in Pulaski County, Illinois. They had eight children: George, Blanche, Lena, Millie, Fred L, Clarence, William, and Edna.

George Washington Bagby second married Flora Matilda Freeze on July 7, 1878 in Pulaski County, Illinois. Flora was born November 10, 1859 in Pulaski County, Illinois. They had 10 children.

Nellie V Gregory, born August 1, 1888 in California, was the youngest of three children born to James M Gregory and Anna C Fisk. James was born in March 1862 in Iowa and Anna was born August 1861 in Germany. Nellie siblings were: Holt Rutherford Gregory, born September 12, 1883, in California; and Hazel L Gregory, born December 1885, in California. After Nellie’s divorce from R. Lee Bagby, she never remarried, and died July 20, 1974 in Riverside County, California.

Her brother Holt attended school in Sierra Madre and Throop Institute in Pasadena. Without any proof I would venture to say that he may well of known R. Lee Bagby at Throop Institute (now Cal-Tech) and it may have been through Holt that R. Lee met Nellie.

Holt married Anita E Carter, whose father Nathaniel C Carter, is considered to be the founder of the city of Sierra Madre, California located along the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena.

I am not sure this helps you in any way, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Elizabeth,

Thank you so much for responding to my query! Jesse and Mary having divorced around 1868 could easily explain my failure to find them in the 1870 or 1880 census. Do you know if Mary Francis (Bagby) Lewis remarried? Am I correct in assuming that your Great Aunt that you mention is Dorothy?

If you are interested, I have extensive research on the family of Mary Frances Bagby that I would be more than happy to share. Simply let me know if you are interested.

While I would truly appreciate a copy of the picture you have of Mary Bagby and Jesse England Lewis, please do not jeopardize it by trying to take it out of its frame if it is a print on photographic paper. It occurs to me that if it is original image from the time of their marriage (December 19, 1860) or shortly after, it would most likely be a tintype and would not be affected by being in a frame, but unless you are sure, I urge you not to tempt fate. If you can scan the image through the glass I would be most grateful.

Any information you may have on either Mary or Jesse is welcome. I have found documentation that they had another son besides Robert Franklin - Charles H. Lewis, born September 9, 1861 in Lewis County, Kentucky.

Best regards,

Dan Dunham
Lewis in 1861.

Mary was born about 1842 in Lewis County, KY (based on her age in the 1850 and 1860 Kentucky Census for Lewis County, in which she and her younger sister Nancy E. Bagby are found in the household of their sister, Catherine S. (Bagby) McAllister, whose husband, John became their guardian after the death of their parents in 1849.

Jesse England Lewis was born about 1837 (based on his age in the 1850 KY Census for Carter County). They married on December 19, 1860 in Lewis County, KY, and had at least two children, Charles H. Lewis, b. September 9, 1861 in Lewis County, KY and Robert Franklin Lewis, b. November 9, 1868, in Missouri. The birth of Charles H. Lewis is documented by the Lewis County Register of Births, found on microfilm, which shows: “September 9, 1861, Charles H. Lewis, father, Jesse E. Lewis, mother, Mary F. Bagby.”

Son, Robert Franklin Lewis, was born in Missouri (according to Census records for 1900, 1910 and 1920). He married Inez Coney Kitchen and they had four children. One of his sons, Jesse Kitchen Lewis, was Assistant Attorney General for Kentucky and in 1955 was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor.

I have not been able to find any documentation for Jesse or wife, Mary and their children after the record for the birth of son Charles H, until son Robert is found in the 1900 KY Census. This includes finding Jesse in the 1860 Census, or any of the family in the 1870 and 1880 Census. The only potential documentation pertaining to Mary Frances (Bagby) Lewis after the birth of Charles I have found is a listing in the Kentucky Death Records 1911-2000, found on Rootsweb.com showing: "Lewis, Mary B. age 82, died Carter Co., residence, Grayson, 02-23-1935, Vol 7, Certificate #3320.”

A singular reference to Mary and Jesse is found in the work: “Early families of eastern and southeastern Kentucky and their descendants, by William C. Kozee” published in 1961, which mentions them on page 438.

Any help or leads will be greatly appreciated - thank you.

Willis Scott Bagby

Willis Scott Bagby was born November 22, 1839 near Saint Paul, Lewis County, Kentucky to Willis and Mary “Polly” Thompson. The sixth of eight children, he was orphaned at the age of nine and one-half, when his parents died on May 7, and July 19,1849 respectively. Following the death of his parents Willis was taken in by uncle and aunt Lewis and Elizabeth Littlejohn Bagby.

In 1860, at the age of 20, Willis was working as a clerk in a dry goods store in Grayson, Carter County, KY. During the Civil War Willis served as a private in Company E, 1st Battalion Mounted Rifles, Kentucky Volunteers, CSA. He was mustered in October 12, 1861, at Cumberland Ford, Bell County, KY. The tax rolls for Greenup County, KY list Willis Bagby in 1866.

Willis married Laura Amanda Munn, b. October 14, 1850 on July 10, 1867 in Greenup County. Together Willis and Laura had eight children:

1. Arthur Moore Bagby, b. May 6, 1869, d. July 29, 1878, a result of having been run over by a wagon while walking to school.
2. Willis Stillwell Bagby, b. June 1, 1871, d. January 28, 1921, m. Eva May Trenary, two children.
3. Mathew Munn Bagby, b. December 31, 1873, twice married, no known children.
4. Lola Alberta Bagby, b. August 1876, m. Charles H. Harris, there children. Charles was an Optician. They removed to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
5. Laura A Bagby, b. June 13, 1879, m. John E. Hancock, two children.
6. Albert Myers Bagby, b. May 1881, an Optician, he removed to Chattanooga where he and his wife Emma had two children.
7. Mitchell Gilbert Bagby, b. July 31, 1884, d. November 17, 1901 at the age of 17 years, 3 months, 17 days.
8. Lester G. Bagby, b. June 23, 1886, d. October 25, 1915. No record of having been married.

Around 1868, Willis formed a partnership will Capt. William Ruggles Stricklett, known as Stricklett & Co. This partnership evolved into a company that was known as Stricklett & Bagby. They ran a wholesale grocery and liquor house and were involved in river transportation. At this time, river transportation on the Ohio River could only be conducted part time, weather permitting, so companies or individuals had to have other full-time business interests to cover the months when river transportation was not possible.

Michael Stanton and James Thompson Bagby (a brother of Willis), bought the wholesale grocery and liquor house of Stricklett & Bagby on October 21, 1871, which they then operated as Stanton and Bagby.

On January 2, 1875, Stricklett & Bagby announced in the Portsmouth Times:
"PORTSMOUTH & VANCEBURG PACKET. Steamer Carrie.
Having purchased the steamer Carrie, we will run her between Portsmouth & Manchester making her ply permanently in the trade. The patronage of the merchants and traveling public of Portsmouth is respectfully solicited.
Freight tariff and passenger rates reasonable.
STRICKLETT & BAGBY. dec19 tf."

The Portsmouth Times reported, 15 Sep 1877: "Capts. Strickland and Bagby have traded the steamer Carrie to Captain Maddy, for the J. M. Kerr, giving $1,850 to boot. The increasing trade between this city and Manchester necessitated the use of a larger boat. The trade was consummated last Saturday evening when the two boats had loaded for their respective trades, and the passengers and freight had to be exchanged, The Kerr is doing well in her new trade. Capt. Maddy has taken the Carrie up the river, and is running her in the Pomeroy and Ravenswood trade."

Overall, Willis worked as the wharfmaster at Vanceburg, KY for eight years and in river transportation for twelve years. By 1888, Willis was operating a Dry Goods store, which he operated until 1903, when he and his wife moved from Vanceburg, KY to Portsmouth, OH, where they bought a home on new Sixth Street. While in Portsmouth, Willis owned and operated a bicycle shop. They eventually returned to Vanceburg where they were in the 1920 Census, Willis was enumerated as a “Retired Retail Merchant.”

Portsmouth Daily Times (Portsmouth, Ohio), Friday, May 21, 1920 ran the following death notice for Willis:
"W. S. Bagby
Relative to the death of the late W. S. Bagby, a leading citizen of Vanceburg, the Sun of that village says:
W. S. Bagby, aged 80, took suddenly worse last Thursday and Friday suffered a stroke of paralysis, which affected his left side and speech, from which he never recovered, dying Wednesday. In the passing of Willis Bagby the family lost a kind, loving husband and father; the church a faithful member, and the community an honorable upright citizen. Besides wife, he leaves five children, two daughters and three sons: Mrs. Charles Harris and Myers Bagby of Chattanooga; Mrs. John Handcock and Will Bagby of Charleston, W. Va., Matt of Williamson, W. Va. Services were held Thursday at the Christian church by Elder F. M. Stambaugh, after which the remains, in charge of Undertaker Plummer, were taken to Siloam to be buried in the family lot. Mr. Bagby had been in declining health for several years, having had several very serious sick spells. For a great many years he was connected with the wharfboat here and later was in business. Some 12 or 15 years ago the family moved to Portsmouth but several years ago came back to this place."

Kentucky death certificate #16634 for year 1920 shows Willis Scott Bagby, born 22 Nov 1839 at St. Paul, Lewis Co., KY, died of apoplexy, 19 May 1920 at Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY, bur. 20 May 1920 at Siloam, KY, son of Willis Bagby (b. Lewis Co., KY) and Mary Thompson (b. Lewis Co., KY). Informant was M. M. Bagby, of Williamson, W. Va. Willis was married at the time of his death and his occupation was given as general merchant.

Nancy E Bagby and Amos B Thomson, KY

Looking for any leads or documentation pertaining to Amos B Thomson (without “p”) and wife, Nancy E Bagby, who married on January 18, 1866 in Scioto County, Ohio. Amos, born about 1840 in Kentucky, was the son of Reuben T Thomson and his first wife Nancy Scott. Reuben T Thomson was the brother-in-law of Nancy E Bagby's uncle, John Bagby who married Sarah Thomson. I have a copy of the marriage license of Amos and Nancy. Nancy E Bagby, born about 1846, based on her age in the 1850 and 1860 Census, presumably in Lewis County, Kentucky, was the youngest child of Willis Baqby and Mary “Polly” Thompson (with “p”). In 1870, Amos and Nancy Thomson are found living in Owen County, Kentucky in the town of Gratz, with two daughters, Lucy, age 3, and Emma, age 2, on page 147. In this same Census, Nancy’s next older sister, Mary Frances Bagby, first married to Jesse England Lewis and now married to Leonard W. Giles is found enumerated on page 146. At the time of the 1870 Census, Amos is listed as a Tavern Keeper.

No other documentation has been found for this family after the 1870 Census, with the only other evidence of Amos Thomson found in the June 16, 1894 obituary of his father, published in the Portsmouth Times that mentions that sons Anthony and Amos are residing in Louisiana. Anthony Thomson, born May 1845, is a half-brother of Amos, from Reuben T Thomson’s second marriage to Frances Ann Waring. In the 1900 Census, half-brother Anthony and his family are found living in Greenup County, Kentucky.
I am happy to be able to report that I have just very recently found the name of the husband of Lucinda Sinks, father of Alonzo Bagby - William Bagby, born in Kentucky. I believe that he is the son of George P. Bagby and Rhena Sarah Bilderback, although I have not yet proved that connection to my satisfaction.

I found the family in the 1870 Illinois Census for Caledonia Post Office, Pulaski County. Lucinda is enumerated as Laura, but sons Alonzo, 6 and George, 4 are of the correct age. The reason I suspect that William's father is George P Bagby is that William and his family are enumerated immediately after that of George P Bagby and his second wife, Margaret Littlejohn.

I would be happy to share reseach with you. Feel free to contact me directly at dmd4yrls (at) sbcglobal (dot) net.

Libby - just to illustrate how a few facts can help!

Mary Frances (Bagby) Lewis' second husband was Leonard W Giles. I found them in the 1880 Kentucky Census for Owen County. (Series: T9 Roll: 438 Page: 227).

In the household are Sallie Lewis, age 13 and Robt F Lewis, age 11. There are also several other children who would be half-siblings of Robert Franklin: Roberta, age 8, Nannie, age 6, and Leonard B, age 1. There is a William, age 20, who clearly is a son from an earlier marriage of Leonard. Leonard W is age 55 and Mary F is age 36.

Hi Libby! Thank you so very much for the additional information. Every little clue helps with the research. Specific regarding Mary Frances Bagby Lewis and her family between 1860 and 1900 have been hard to document and I look forward to anything else you may recall or learn from you Great-aunt Dorothy.

Mary Frances Bagby’s parents, Willis and Mary Thompson Bagby both died in 1849 when Mary was about 7. She and her younger sister, Nancy Bagby were taken in by their oldest sister, Catherine S Bagby and her husband, John McAllister, who became their legal guardian.

I have long suspected that there were additional children besides Charles and Robert, in large part because of a casual note in the work by William Kozee “Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky and their Descendants” on page 438 mentions that Mary Francis Bagby, as sister of the late James Bagby of Grayson, married Jesse England Lewis and that they had a son named Robert Franklin Bagby “among others.” I am quoting loosely from memory, as I do not have the full, exact citation readily at hand.

Could the name of the man who Sally married have been Honaker? The reason I ask is that there was a Honaker family that was closely related to the family of Jesse England Lewis. One of Jesse England Lewis’ maternal Aunts, Sarah P England married Charles W Honaker and one of their daughters, Lucy Lee Honaker married an older brother of Mary Frances (Bagby) Lewis – Robert Bagby. It was a second marriage for both Robert and Lucy.

Please contact me off the board so that I may provide you with information on the Bagby family of Mary Frances Bagby Lewis. My research notes are far too lengthy to post on the message board. I may be reached at:

Dmd4yrls “at” sbcglobal.net

I don't have the information you need, but I was interested in your post because Alonzo Bagby is my paternal great-grandfather. His son Roy was my grandfather, and Roy's son James is my father.

We have plenty of information about the family in California, including the ancestry of Alonzo's wife Hattie Belle Gibbons, but had found nothing about Illinois until now (I did not even have the name of Lucinda Sinks until reading your post, so thank you for that!).

Hello...I don't know if I can help...but I know that Mary
Bagby and Jesse Lewis divorced around 1868...Their grand
daughter(my great-aunt) is still living..She is the daughter
of Robert Franklin Lewis..My understanding from her is that
they divorced around the time of Robert Franklin's birth
the reason she told me is that the families did not get
along..I have a picture of Mary Bagby and Jesse England
I don't know if it is their wedding picture..it is in a
frame and I would be afraid to take it out, but perhaps
I could copy it...Elizabeth Lewis DeNoto

Hi Dan...I checked the picture and it easily came
out of the frame..It must be a copy so I think
I can copy it and send it to you..If you would like to
see it before I can take a picture of it and e-mail it to you..Dorothy is my Great-aunt and I am going to write her, a few years ago we brought up the Bagbys and she told me
that Mary and Jesse divorced while Mary was pregnant with
my Great-grandfather Robert Franklin..so that was why he
was born in St.Joseph Missouri...I think in 1868..I believe
that Mary and Jesse also had a girl that was born sometime between the 2 boys..her name was Sally and she
married a Hanaker (sp?) It is my understanding that my
Great-grandfather Robert stayed in Missouri with Mary for awhile before coming back to Ky..I believe Mary Bagby married again to a Mr. Giles and I think she lived in Missouri and least for a little while before returning to Ky. I hope that helps ..I know my Aunt Dorothy is much more
knowledgeable than I, so I'm going to write her and see what I can find out.. I would be very intersted in more information about the Bagby's. Oh also I think Mary might have had another child. I found an old picture of a girl with the name Louisa Giles Berry and I think is says daugher of Nannie..Not sure how this fits in I was told that
this is a picture of a half sister of Robert Franklin but
the photo looks like the early 1900's and she appears to be
a young teen-ager maybe 13 or so..Don't know if this could be a daughter or step daughter or maybe even grand daughter.
The photo is in a cardboard picture frame that is stamped
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma...Hope this helps...Thanks Elizabeth (Libby) Lewis DeNoto

Many of us would be grateful if family photos would be posted on Ancestry.com or other sites for the benefit of all us researchers. It is fun to see photos of the collateral lines and notice family resemblances going way back. You can make photos and trees private or public.

My Bagbys, who came directly from Virginia to Missouri, nevertheless have connections with the Gregory family from Owen County, Kentucky.

I am interested in connections between Gregorys and Bagbys as my great-grandfather Andrew Bagby married Ada Gregory in Huntsville, Missouri. Ada Gregory's father Absalom Gregory came from Owen, Kentucky and I wonder if there is a continuing link between the Gregory and Bagby clans in Kentucky, Missouri, California, and elsewhere.
