SO IT HAS TO BE A MALE ONLY WHO CAN GET THE TESTS DONE?

Simply, yes. Find a male with the surname you want tracked.

Part 1) Every man has an X and a Y sex chromosome(XY), every woman has 2 X sex chromosomes (XX). When the woman has a child (simplistically) the egg cell has one or the other X because the egg only has a single chromosome. This combines with the sperm cell from the man that is either an X sperm or a Y sperm. If the sperm is an X the result is a girl (XX). If the sperm is a Y the result is a boy (XY). With a girl, there is no Y, so the Y dies out. If it is a boy, the Y part is exactly the same as the father’s Y unless there is a tiny mutation, which is not likely. Brothers, uncles, father, grandfather, great uncles, ggggggrandfathers all have the same DNA (with sometimes tiny differences).

Part 2) Every egg also has a little separate part inside that is called a mitochondria (separate from the X sex chromosome). It is kind of like the stomach of the cell (or a little furnace). Every mitochondria has its own DNA. The egg’s mitochondrial DNA is from the mother’s cells and is always passed from mother to mother by eggs. Boy’s have their mother’s mitochondrial DNA (from the mother’s egg), but when they have children, the mitochondrial DNA from the father is not there (only comes from eggs of the mother). So, if you have a MtDNA test (Mitochondrial DNA) it matches sisters, aunts, mothers, grandmothers, great aunts, gggggggrandmothers (with sometimes tiny differences).

Bill Bagley
I will try to answer a couple of questions I got offline:

1. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST AND WHERE TO GET IT: $99, $119, $209 depending on the test done. I got the $119, 37 marker test and recently upgraded to the 67 marker ($99 upgrade). It is on sale through Dec 09. You can also get a free test done through Sorenson at www.SMGF.com, but I have been waiting almost two years for my results from there and they are not done yet. The familytree site is http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Bagley&am..., but be sure to join the Bagley Project first to get your discount.

2. In my opinion you don't need a test done if you have a close relative that already took the test (use their results). This is for folks that are searching for deep ancestors, or don't know which line they belong to, because they are brick walled. I see so many questions like my Great Grandfather is xxxx Bagley, who can help me? DNA testing can help you folks.

3. WHO WILL PAY FOR MY TESTS? Well, I shared the cost with my brother, son, and uncle. We each paid $30 and I took the test. The results are good for all of us.

4. WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE? here:
http://www.kerchner.com/y&mtdna.htm
or here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogical_DNA_test
or here (scroll down):
http://www.huxford.com/Genetics_Wiregrass_Results_67Markers_...

Thanks to those folks that contacted me.
Bill Bagley
Bagley DNA testing...

Hi Bagley’s! My name is Bill Bagley from Forest Grove, Oregon. I have just signed on as an Assistant Administrator for the Bagley DNA Project. First, let me say that I am a volunteer and have no interest in these DNA tests other than the furthering of my research and yours. Second, I think DNA testing is the best thing since the census for family research! It provides scientific documentation and linkage like no paper trail can.

Many of you over the years have posted here trying to link to ancestors. I have been able to help some, but not others. I recently had the 37 marker DNA test done (cost me $119), and convinced two other remote cousins to test as well. This verified our relationship to common ancestors in Massachusetts at the 5th cousin level. My Haplogroup is E1b1b1c1a. I am from the Samuel Bagley line (Weymouth, Mass ca. 1650). Others have tested from the Orlando Bagley line (Amesbury, Mass ca. 1624, Haplogroup R1b1b2). Southern Lines from Georgia / Carolina are the same Haplogroup (R1b1b2) but different remote family lines and marker DNA, different ancestors entirely. This testing alone (from 10 brave souls), so far, shows there is no relationship whatsoever between Samuel and Orlando Bagley from Massachusetts as was once theorized, or also some other Bagleys from the Southern States. But we need more data points!

I want to urge males from the Bagley line to have testing done, ESPECIALLY if you are unsure of your more remote ancestors (this Y-DNA surname testing will not work on females, so get your father or brother to help). If you are fairly certain about your linkage to my line, I am not at all bashful about sharing my DNA test results with you. You can do your own testing if you want scientific (rather than paper) confirmation of your lineage. It is much easier to work in both directions (from your known ancestors back and your remote ancestors toward you) than in only one direction, even if you don’t know the folks in between yet, you will know where you are going. (It’s much easier for me to find a road from Oregon to Massachusetts, if I know I want to end up in Massachusetts)

I’ll watch the board, but feel free to contact me directly if you are unsure how to proceed, or have any other questions. As always I am happy to share my GEDCOM files with you or other research if you are interested. For example, I have a digitized copy of the 362 page “Rungs on Our Ladder of Life” by Lillian P. Bagley (of the Emanuel Bagley Line) with permission to distribute if anyone wants an email of it.

Bill Bagley
Re: Y-DNA Testing

Hello W. R. Bagley,

The answer to your question is YES. I am the Project Administrator for the Bagley Surname DNA Project. Six Bagley men have been tested so far. If you'll obtain a Y-DNA test via FTDNA and share with us your Bagley genealogy (as you know it) (any format will do),I'll be able to share with you the results of the Project and help you understand your test results as compared to the others tested so far, as well the Bagley men who will be tested in the future.

You can order a Y-DNA test via the following link for my Bagley Project:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Bagley&am...

I do recommend that you obtain the Y-DNA-37 test for 37 markers. It's the best test when you want to use your results for genealogical research.

My Web site for the Bagley DNA Project is available at:

http://huxford.com/Genetics_Bagley.htm

Let me know if you have any questions.

Rob Noles

Robert B.
I only ran across a photo album. My best friend's mother had possession of it. She didn't know how she came across it or who it is or anything. Just gave it to me cuz I liked how old it is. I'd found the graduation certificates and a diploma included in the album and know myself that these kinds of things are important to family members. Are you in Oregon anywhere?

Carrie Merton
carrie20ann@hotmail.com

Daisy (called Peggy) is seated, Cliff is standing to the left of her and Juanita is standing next to him. Both girls have large white bows in their hair. Can you tell me your relation to Cliff? Thank you. Dorothy Reed Pace

It was written by Kareen M. Perry. I have some pages, good information but lots of errors.
