Where in Italy is your great-grandfather from? My grandfather's name was also Vincenzo James Russo, he was born in 1885, in the town Mugnano del Cardinale, province of Avellino. My father named Robert Russo, also has no history on the relatives in Italy, which I'm trying to research. Let me know if this maybe your great-grandfather.

Mario, I have a few Bagur's in my line that were from Menorca. Do you know what city your line came from? Mine were from Mahon and San Luis, circa 1800 or so. One ancestor, Juan Carreras y Bagur, came to the United States and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana around 1850 or so.

For James: I'd really be interested in exchanging information with you as some of the names in your tree are in common with mine. Coll, Bagur, Gomilas (Comellas?). perhaps we could link up one of our collateral lines. I know these names are fairly common in Menorca but, one never knows!

I have many Bagurs from Menorca in my family. But the latest one I have was Maria Rosa Bagur Y Coll, 1807 - 1879. I believe I go back to Bartolome Bagur, my 11th great grandfather.

Hello Joel,

I live in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and am a 5th-generation Northeast Iowan. There are a lot of Bagurs living in and near Mason City, Iowa.

I once met a "Murray Bagur, " who was from Mason City, but living in 1967 in Lincoln, Nebrska. I'm trying to make contact with him, again.

I know of the place named "Bagur" in Spain. The history of that place, and of the Bagur Family, are both very interesting. I'd like to hear from you, some time.

Well... unfortunately I can't help you much because I haven't been successful in linking ANY of my Bagur line. My 3rd GGFather, Pedro Carreras married Magdalena Bagur. They lived in Mahón, Menorca. She was the daughter of Pedro Bagur and Magdalena Carreras. That is the extent of my knowledge on the Bagur line as far as my family goes. There are some Bagur's from the New Orleans area who trace back to Menorca but I was never able to make a link with those families. Good luck in your search.

My maiden name was Bagur. I am of Cuban descent, but my ancestry is from Majorca/Menorca area. I grew up in New Jersey after my father, Mario Bagur imigrated to the US from Cuba. He spent a few months in Miami immediately upon arrival from Cuba and then went to Brooklyn, NY and eventually settled in Northern NJ. I am curious if anyone feels they might know my family. My paternal grandfather was also named Mario Bagur.
Regards,
Christina

Re: Surname: Bagur

I have Bagurs in my family, which is in New Orleans, LA and the surrounding area. Our Bagurs apparently came to the United States from Majorca in the early 1800s. However, there is a town named Bagur in northeastern Spain; we haven't been able to get back that far yet.

Alice Ernestine Bagur, b. 1882, probably New Orleans, LA; d. 1944, Hammond, LA, was my great-grandmother. She married Thomas Frederick Gessner Sr., 1878-1953, in New Orleans. She was the daughter of Peter "Pierre" Bagur Sr., 1832-1888, and Celestine Cornibe, 1844-1926. "Pierre" was the son of Barthelennie Bagur and Catherine de Torrenti, both supposedly from Majorca.

In addition to Alice (pronounced ah-LEECE), "Pierre" and Celestine had the following children: Marie Emilie Bagur, d. 1962; Ernest Bagur; Julia Bagur; Louis Bagur; Bertha Bagur; Albert Bagur; Jules Bagur Sr.; Pierre Bagur Jr.; Catherine Bagur; and Madeline Bagur. Alice's father, "Pierre" Bagur, married a second time, to Jeanne Pons, and their children were Jeanne Bagur and Katherine "Tateen" Bagur.

I'm sorry I don't have more information. We simply haven't put the stories of the "old folks" into the computer, nor have we done proper documentation; most documents are still in the current grandparents' closets!

I've only ever met one person named Bagur. He was a teaching assistant who monitored my final exam in Geography 101 at Louisiana State University in 1968, and I was such a fool I didn't even talk to him!

Joel
