Descendants of William Annesley Bailie 1740-1821

I am searching for the descendants of William Annesley Bailie, born in Innisharghie, Co Down, Ireland in 1740. He was the son of John Bailie (1697-1747) and Jane Forde (d 1781). He served in the East India Company and became a Colonel. He married Hon Elizabeth St Leger Aldworth in 1787 in Cork, Ireland. I believe they had 1 daughter and 3 sons - Elizabeth b 1782, George b 1792, Thomas Goddard b about 1785 and William b about 1790. They moved to Bath, Somerset, England where William died in 1821 and Elizabeth died in 1831. I would appreciate any information on their children. I believe Elizabeth married a John Nagle from Cork and William married Jane Georgina. I know Thomas married Mary Murphy.

Re: William Bailie

Your inquiry about William Bailie caught my eye. I, too, had a great-great grandfather named William Bailie(ca.1825-1901). He was from No. Ireland, came to the US in the 1830's and became a soldier in the Seminole Indian War. I have a copy of his memoirs of America recorded by a relative (last name Glover of Georgia) in 1900. William said after the war he went hunting for pelts and alligator teeth, but his boat capsized off the Atlantic coast, so he returned to Ireland in the late 1830's, got married, had a number of children, including my great grandfather, Robert Bailie (1854-1953). Robert had uncles (William's brothers) who came to settle in Lancaster, Wisconsin in the 1850-60's. They had sizable farms based on the platt records, and there are lots of Bailies with impressive tombstones buried (including Robert) just south of Lancaster. Some descendents still live in and about Lancaster. After he was born in Ireland, Robert went to join his uncles as a young man in Wisconsin. Robert married and had a number of children as well. One son was "Uncle Will," brother of my grandmother (Lizzie Bailie Heiliger, 1885-1956). Will went to Canada and apparently ended up living in Banff, Alberta. His family allegedly had a huge cattle ranch. I realize I'm not addressing your inquiry directly, but you need to know that the Bailie spelling is a variation of Baillie and Baillieul and Baliol. John Baliol was king of Scotland from 1292-1296, placed on the throne by Edward Longshanks (Edward I), to get the Scots in line. Baliol soon disagreed with Longshanks and was deposed, setting the stage for William Wallace (Braveheart) and Robert the Bruce to win Scottish independence. Baliol was a descendent of Guy de Baillieul who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. You can have fun tracing all the royals on your own. However, where the Bailie story gets muddled is in about 1600 when Elizabeth I sent Scots to No. Ireland to manage the Catholic problem. Some Bailies came to No. Ireland then while others remained in Scotland, some adding an extra "l" in the spelling, Lanarkshire is the hometown name that recurs with the Scottish Bailies. My Irish ancestors come from around Randalstown and Antrim near the Lough Neagh in County Antrim. There is a Bailieboro just south of the Lough Neagh in County Cavan, southwest of Armagh. There is also a Bailieboro in Ontario, Canada, maybe 60 miles north of Toronto, near Rice(?) Lake. Perhaps your ancestor went there first before coming to America. I hope you find your family, and perhaps we'll learn we are a part of your family after you connect all the dots. So good luck. Keep in touch. Rev. Dr. Robert Lee Heiliger, 1345 New England Way, Lebanon, OH. 45036

The idea of mis-spelling is a modern one. In past centuries spelling was up to the writer, based on pronunciation, so any spelling which sounded right when spoken, was acceptable. It was the advent of dictionaries that brought about the concept of "correct" spelling.
Guy Fawkes was just another spelling of Fox, for example. Have a look at Black's "Surnames of Scotland" for his many examples of variant spellings throughout history for each surname.
For Baillie, Bailie, Bailey, he says; "it is most certainly derived from O.F. Bailli, the bailie or bailiff. The earliest record of the name in Scotland is in 1311.12, when one William de Bailli appears as a juror". He gives over a dozen spellings for the surname.
Today I was indexing Wick Burgh minutes of the early 1800s, and the spelling used by the then clerk for the title was "bailie", whereas his predecessor used "baillie".
Best wishes,
Gordon.

The only point I was trying to make is that Bailie is a title, whereas, Baillie is a surname. Any use of Bailie as a surname is likely to be a mis-spelling.

The surname comes from the Scots term Bailie/Baillie/Bailzie (where the letter z was actually a "yogh", which is now extinct as a letter). All three spellings are found in Burgh records.
The term denoted either an official on an estate, or a burgh magistrate, second only to the provost in rank.
Gordon.

I do not know if this will help, but Bailie is the title of a city official, while Baillie is probably the Gaelicized version of Bailey.

The Baillie line(s) in Scotland are not very numerous, and there is some controversy about the origin of the name. Some historians claim the name is derived from the discredited Balliol line (puppet kings of scotland under Edward I). However, I believe the name is simply the Gaelic version of the Bailey name, and that they came to Scotland from Ireland during the Bruce's war to restore independence from England.

I am looking for information on my Uncle Thomas Bailie (through marriage to my aunt Isabella Cassells). He was born in Hillsborough around 1887, the son of Thomas Bailie and Sarah Ann ?, both born in Ireland. He had two other brothers who were born in Scotland, Robert and John. The family were in Scotland only a short time, presumably for work. My Aunt Isabella and Thomas Bailie married in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada (they came separately, she in 1911 to marry). My problem is that I can't find any death information on him or her or any children.
If anyone has information on this line I would really appreciate it.

William Bailie

William Bailie was my Great-Great-Grandfather. He was married to Ann Harrigain, who died in childbirth, and had 7 kids: Annie Bailie, Florence Bailie(? – abt. 1900), Jane Bailie, John Bailie, Robert Bailie, Willie Bailie, Alexander Bailie (1899 – 1968).

They lived in the United Kingdom though I'm not sure which part. I think it was Northern Ireland.

Alexander was my Great-Grandfather. He came over to the United States as part of the British Merchant Marines, he jumped ship in Brooklyn and that's how my part of the family got to the U.S.
I know that Willie and Robert drowned during World War I, as part of the Navy. (UK or US, not sure)
Jane was sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
After Ann Harrigain died her sister stepped in and took Willie, Florence(?
My Bailie family were mainly from County Antrim in N. Ireland.
The furthest I go back is c1810 Alexander Bailie
I know that a number of my fathers family emigrated to USA & Canada in late 1800's early 1900's.
The other thing I know is that my fathers family were very musical
If you think there could be any connection it would be great to hear from you.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can trace their Bailie roots back to William Bailie.
Hi Gerry,

The name that I have for someone who lived in Innishargie House in the mid 1930's is Thomas M’Bride. I got that from articles that appeared in the Newtownards Spectator in 1935. I have copies of the articles which are not entirely complete, but give some details about the house and the Bailie family. If you would send me your email address, I would send the three articles to you. I was at Innishargie House a few years back and got copies of the original articles, then sent them to a library in Northern Ireland and they filled in most of what I was missing. In case my email address does not get through to you it is webale@ksu.edu.

Wayne Bailie
