Yes, my great grandfather owned slaves. His name was John Thomas Bailey (b. 1801, d. 1879). He was born in Greene Co. NC and moved to Cherokee Co. AL. As of the 1860 census, he had 9 slaves. In 1870 they are listed separately in the same area, but a different household. The old story goes that John Bailey was hung by the carpetbaggers after the civil war, but his (former) slaves, now share croppers cut him down and he lived but was unable to walk or speak. according to the 1870 census, they are listed as follows:Jack - 35yrs. male, mullatto, farmer with $100 value of personal real estate; Rose - 70 yrs. female, black, keeps house; Tamer - 40yrs. female, black; Gaston - 30yrs. male mulatto, farmer; Mary - 21 female, mulatto; Hill - 17, male, mulatto, farmer; Rose - 15 female, mulatto; Harriet - 12, female, mulatto; all of the above are listed as being born in NC. Charity - 10yrs, female, mulatto; Dock - 7yrs, male mulatto; Samuel - 4yrs, male mulatto; Adeline - 4yrs. male mulatto. These are listed as being born in AL. I haven't searched for them in the 1880 census, but I will if you'd like. I don't know if this provides any helpful info for you, but at least you know of some Baileys in AL. I know that Baldwin Co. is in the lower part of AL and Cherokee Co. is NE AL (near the GA state line) Let me know if I can be of further help. Thanks.
