According to court papers filed in the Chancery court of Southampton County Va. 1773, Martha Basden V. James Basden, James Basden's son in law was John Gwinn. The wife's name of elizabeth comes from Deeds in Southampton and Isle of Wight counties Va. He probably is the grandson of Boaz Gwin d.1697 and Sarah from Isle of Wight county Va and connected to Solomon Gwin who married Honor Duck in 1796 in Isle of Wight County VA.

John Gwin must have owned more adjoining land in Isle of Wight because in 1779 he is mentioned as a neighbor in a deed from Robert and Frances Weston to Francis Vaughn.
