A lot of the people on this have moved to the Facebook Baisden family group. It is mainly the West Virginia line as was this list. When you get your results send them to me and I will post them on the web page.

Have you followed the paper trail back from Alabama back to North Carolina and Looked for possible counties? I think that WF is the son of a Baisden daughter who may not have had a formal relationship with the father. The same thing happened in my Lea family. All of her children carried her surname. The father doesn't seem to have been around. The grandfather left part of the estate to the children of his daughter Nancy Lea. Of course she could have married a cousin, but that doesn't seem to be the case. She had several children. It took years to find Nancy, I am still looking to verify the status of the father.

Deborah

Thank you for your reply. I know how life gets in the way -- I did not do very much genealogy research for several years. Should I submit the results of the additional markers tested at FTDNA for my father (Wm. C. Basden) -- if so, how do I do that? My father's cousin, Merle Basden, is awaiting results of 37 markers from FTDNA. Merle is now 91.

My sister, brother, and I have done autosomal DNA testing through 23andMe, hoping to find connections and perhaps determine the parentage of Wm. Franklin Basden, Jr., the common ancestor that Merle and my father share.

Millie

Does anyone know if this project is still active?

My father's 25-marker DNA results from 2004 were posted and I have recently upgraded his test to 67 markers. His cousin has also ordered more markers and will soon have results. The pages do not appear to have been updated for a number of years.
Millie Basden

James D. and Eliza Baisden of Lenoir County, N.C.

In the 1910 U.S. census of Sale City, Mitchell County, Georgia is a Reuben and Neoma Baisden, who came from North Carolina. Reuben Edward Baisden (b. 5 Feb. 1878) is brother to James Samuel Baisden (b. 10 Jan. 1883) and Myrtle Ann Baisden (b. 8 May 1884), also living in Mitchell County, Georgia. Their parents were James D. and Eliza Baisden of Lenoir County, N.C., according to the N.C. Birth and Death Indexes of Lenoir Co., N.C., but it is uncertain how or if they are related to Siddy Baisden (b. 1845), who lived next door to them in Sale City, Mitchell County, GA. I am interested in who the parents of James D. and Eliza Baisden were and if they were related to Siddy Baisden, who was originally from Duplin County, N.C.

I have discovered some additional information since my last post. We know the marriage record of Jacob Spaulding lists his parents as Charles Spaulding and Susan Evans.

April 5, 1860 Logan Co
SPALDING, Jacob 23
HENSLEY, Elizabeth 20
His parents:
Charles Spalding and Susan Evans
Her parents:
John Blair and Polly Hensley

I have found a second marriage for Jacob's father Charles Spaulding.

Charles Spaulding married Elizabeth Thompson, 4 May 1849, Lawrence Co., KY

This means that Jacob Spaulding, born around 1837, was only around 12 years old when his father married Elizabeth Thompson.
That may explain why Jacob's daughter Nancy J. (Spaulding) Baisden put the "Thompson" in her son Harry Thompson Baisden's name.

Also, since Jacob Baisden's age is incorrectly listed as 25 on the 1900 census, when it should have been 15 according to his marriage record, that would make Cora, not Jacob, the oldest child of Nancy and Joshua Baisden.

I found a McDowell County marriage for Delie Baisden and Claude Smith. They were married 6 August 1919, in Welch, WV. Her parents are listed as Dock and Nancy J. His parents are listed as Bud and Ellen.

I am also searching for more information on W. L. Smith (age 21) who married Cordelia Baisden (age 17) on 28 Feb 1907 in Mingo Co., WV. His parents are listed as George and Rachel Smith and he gave his birthplace as Pike Co., KY. Her parents are not named and her birthplace is Logan Co., WV. If anyone can help, please contact me.

Also, I am still searching for more information on JOSHUA BAISDEN. If anyone has information on Joshua Baisden who married Nancy J. Spaulding in Logan Co., WV on 5 Aug 1881, PLEASE contact me. His age is listed as 21 and her age is listed as 18. They both give Logan Co., WV, as their place of birth, and the only parent listed on the marriage record for Joshua is "S. Baisden". Finding more information on Joshua, especially his year of death, is the key to figuring out if the children of Nancy J. (Spaulding) Baisden were fathered by two different men (Joshua Baisden or Harrison Baisden).

Hi Tammy. I am sorry if I did not make myself clear. I was NOT saying that Harrison's real name is Joshua. I am saying that Harrison and Joshua are two different people, but both men were called "Doc". "Doc" Joshua Baisden was born around 1860 in Logan Co., WV, and died before 1900. "Doc" Joshua Baisden married Nancy J. Spaulding on 5 Aug 1881 in Logan Co., WV. Their children were Cora, Jake, Mary J., Cordelia, and Harrison Baisden.

"Doc" Harrison Baisden was born around 1844/45 and died in 1916 in Mingo County. "Doc" Harrison Baisden was married first to Sarah Ferrell 31 Aug 1872 in Boone County, WV. He next married Pricey Deskins 20 Jun 1880 Logan Co, WV. "Doc" Harrison's children were Wallace, Walter, Laura, and Julius.

"Doc" Harrison Baisden did not have a son named Harrison Baisden, but "Doc" Joshua and Nancy J. Baisden did have a son named Harrison Baisden. "Doc" Joshua and Nancy's son Harrison Baisden married Mattie Lockard. His marriage record lists his parents as "Doc" and Nancy, but I have provided his brother's and sister's marriage records to show that in addition to Harrison calling their father "Doc" on his marriage record, Jacob Baisden, the oldest child of Joshua and Nancy, (married 18 March 1905 in Mingo Co. Lydia Tiller, daughter of Nash and Bettie Tiller), also listed his parents on his marriage record as "Doc" and Nancy Baisden. Joshua and Nancy's daughter Cora Baisden, widow of ? Davis, married Beverly Smith 29 Aug 1906 in Mingo County. Her parents are listed as Joshua and Nancy Baisden. These records prove to me that Joshua Baisden was also called "Doc". Harrison Baisden who married Mattie Lockard was the son of "Doc" Joshua Baisden, not "Doc" Harrison Baisden. At no time was he ever living with "Doc" Harrison Baisden or his family as proven by the census records, because he was the son of "Doc" Joshua Baisden and was living with Joshua's and Nancy's family from the time he was born until he married Mattie Lockard, who was living next door to his family while he was living with his sister and his Smith relatives in Pike Co., KY.

Nancy J. (Spaulding) Baisden was the grand daughter of James Blair, and James Blair had a son named Harrison. It could be that Nancy named her son after Harrison Blair instead of someone in the Baisden family. We will never know for sure.

I notice we also share Sam Ferguson and Mary Jamison as ancestors and I also have Mullins in my family line. I descend through Sam Ferguson, Jr. and Lucy Stokes, Polly Ferguson and John B. Farley, Thomas Farley and Nancy Ann Maynard, Lydia Farley and Paul Z. Alley, Sarah Alley and William SMITH.....There are several sets of Smith's in my family cemetery with the Farley's and Alleys along with Nancy J. Baisden and her mother Elizabeth Spaulding. I imagine that both of their husbands are there also. The cemetery is very old and there are many unmarked graves and unreadable stones.

Hi. I noticed your query has been here for a while, but hopefully you still check to see if anyone has answered. Maybe you have it all figured out by now, but I have just recently been working on this line because Nancy J. Baisden is buried in my family cemetery in Mingo Co. and I have been trying to figure out how she fits into my Farley family. Nancy J. Baisden is the mother of the Harrison Baisden that married Mattie Lockard. Nancy's mother, Elizabeth Spaulding is also buried in the cemetery. I have more information on Nancy's family that I do on the Baisden side. Here is what I have so far:

Nancy J. Baisden’s maiden name was Spaulding. She was born 7 Aug 1861. She was married to “Doc” Joshua Baisden on 5 Aug 1881 in Logan Co., WV. Nancy was the daughter of Jacob Spaulding and Elizabeth Hensley Spaulding. Elizabeth Hensley was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Hensley and John Blair. I believe Mary "Polly" Hensley to be the widow of Comfort Hensley. Comfort Hensley was the son of William Hensley and Elizabeth Brewster. It does not appear that Mary "Polly" Hensley and John Blair were ever married.

Jacob Spaulding and Elizabeth Hensley Marriage:

5 April 1860 - Logan Co., VA
Minister: Comfort Brewster
SPALDING Jacob 23
HENSLEY Elizabeth 20
Both born in Logan Co. and both single
Jacob's parents: Charles Spalding and Susan Evans
Elizabeth's parents: John Blair and Polly Hensley

1860 - Nancy J. not born yet
1860 United States Federal Census
Name: Jacob Spaulding
Age in 1860: 23
Birth Year: abt 1837
Home in 1860: Logan, Virginia
Post Office: Pigeon Trace
Jacob Spaulding 23
Elizabeth Spaulding 19
Mary Spaulding 2

1870 - Nancy J. at home with her parents:

1870 United States Federal Census
Hardee, Logan County, WV
Jacob Spalding 33
Elizabeth Spalding 28
Mary Spalding 11
Nancy J Spalding 9
Lucinda Spalding 4
Joseph Spalding 6/12

1880 - Nancy J. still with parents
1880 United States Federal Census
Hardee, Logan, West Virginia
Jacob Spaulding 46
Elizabeth Spaulding 41
Nancy J. Spaulding 19
Lucinda Spaulding 15
Joseph Spaulding 10
Albert Spaulding 7
Lieuella Spaulding 4
Salley Spaulding 8m

On 5 Aug 1881 in Logan Co., WV, Nancy J. Spaulding married Joshua Baisden. His age is listed as 21 and her age is listed as 18. They both give Logan Co., WV, as their place of birth. They were married by Comfort Brewster. Joshua only has one parent listed on the marriage record and that is S. Baisden. Nancy J.'s parents are listed as J. Spaulding and E. Blair. I have also found Joshua listed as "Doc" in some of the children's marriage records. I know there is an earlier Harrison Baisden born in 1844/45 and died in 1916 that was a physician and was called "Doc", but apparently Joshua was also called "Doc". I have not been able to figure out which Baisden family Joshua fits into, only that one of his parents was S. Baisden according to the marriage record.

By the 1900 Mingo County census, Nancy J. Baisden is listed as a widow, so by now Joshua "Doc" Baisden is deceased. Nancy's father Jake is living with her and listed as a widower, so Nancy's mother is now also deceased. The first thing I noticed on this census record is that Jake Baisden is listed as age 25 and it should be 15. The second thing I notice is that the youngest son is listed as Harry Thompson, but on later census records we will find him listed as Harrison Baisden. So I assume that Thompson was his middle name. He is not the same "Doc" Harrison Baisden that was born in 1844/45. And he is not that “Doc” Harrison Baisden’s son. “Doc” Harrison Baisden bn 1844/45 was married first to Sarah Ferrell and second to Pricey Deskins. His children were Wallace, Walter, Laura, and Julius. (I have documentation if you need it). There is another Harrison Baisden that married Bertha Bloss, and several others with varying birth dates. This Harrison Baisden, son of Nancy and “Doc” Joshua Baisden married Mattie Lockard 4 Feb 1920 in Mingo County.

1900 United States Federal Census
Mingo County, WV
about Nancy Baisden

Name: Nancy Baisden
[Nancy Spaulding]
Home in 1900: Lee, Mingo, West Virginia
[Lee, Mingo, West Virginia]
Age: 38
Birth Date: Aug 1861
Birthplace: West Virginia
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Father's name: Jake Spaulding
Father's Birthplace: Kentucky
Mother's Birthplace: West Virginia
Mother: number of living children: 5
Mother: How many children: 6
Marital Status: Widowed
Occupation: View on Image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Nancy Baisden 38 head (widow)
Jake Spaulding 65 father (widower)
Jake Baisden 25 (this should be 15) son (single) - birth year would be around 1885
Cora Davis 17 daughter (widow) - birth year would be around 1883
Mary J Baisden daughter 12 (single) - birth year would be around 1888
Cordelia Baisden daughter 11 (single) - birth year would be around 1889
Harry Thompson son 6 (single) - birth year would be around 1894.

We all know that the ages/birth dates often incorrect and vary from one census to another.

Here are the marriages of the children of Nancy J. and Joshua "Doc" Baisden that I have found:

All Marriages are in Mingo Co., WV

Jacob Baisden the oldest child of Joshua and Nancy, married 18 March 1905 Lydia Tiller daughter of Nash and Bettie Tiller. His parents are listed on the marriage record as Doc and Nancy Baisden. He gives his age as 21 years old. (Birth year would be around 1884/85).

Cora Baisden, widow of ? Davis married Beverly Smith 29 Aug 1906. Her parents are listed as Joshua and Nancy Baisden. His parents are listed as Harrison and Catherine Smith

There is a Mary J. Baisden that married 21 Sept 1907 Joseph Brewer. Neither one list names of parents.

Cordelia Baisden married 28 Feb 1907 W. L. Smith son of George and Rachel Smith. She listed no parents.

Harrison Baisden married 4 Feb 1920 Mattie Lockard. His parents are listed as Doc and Nancy Baisden. Her parents are listed as Tom and Liddie Lockard. Their place of residence is Toler, KY.

In the 1910 Mingo Census I find this record of Harrison Baisden. Harrison is living with his sister Cora who now is married to Beverly Smith. I know his mother Nancy J. Baisden is deceased by now. Her headstone, which is very hard to read, gives her death as 1901 or 1904. I plan to photograph the stone when I go back to the cemetery in the spring.

1910 United States Federal Census
Mingo Co., WV
Name: Harrison Barsden
[Harrison Baisden]
Age in 1910: 16
Estimated Birth Year: 1894
Birthplace: West Virginia
Relation to Head of House: Brother-in-Law
Father's Birth Place: West Virginia
Mother's Birth Place: West Virginia
Home in 1910: Williamson, Mingo, West Virginia
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Beveley Smith 25
Cora Smith 25
William Adair 6
Ballard Smith 3
Cecil Smith 2/12
Harrison Baisden 16

In 1920, Harrison is living with his other sister Cordelia (Delia) and her Smith family in Pike Co., KY

1920 United States Federal Census
Name: Harrison Baisden
Home in 1920: Pond, Pike, Kentucky
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1898
Birthplace: West Virginia
Relation to Head of House: Brother-in-Law
Father's Birth Place: West Virginia
Mother's Birth Place: West Virginia
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Male
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Claud Smith 24
Delia Smith 24
James W Smith 3 [3 6/12]
Elmer Smith 2 [2 4/12]
Polly Harris 68 - Grandmother
Harrison Baisden 22 - Brother-In-Law
Jim Baisden 29 - Brother-In-Law
Lizzie Smith 29 - Aunt

Right next door, we find Mattie Lockard living with her sister Mickey and her family.

1920 United States Federal Census
Name: Lilburn Whitt
Home in 1920: Pond, Pike, Kentucky
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Birthplace: West Virginia
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
[Head]
Spouse's Name: Mickey Whitt
Father's Birth Place: Kentucky
Mother's Birth Place: Kentucky
Marital Status: Married
Household Members: Name Age
Lilburn Whitt 29
Mickey Whitt 22
Ernest Whitt 5
Tommie Whitt 1 [1 9/12]
Mattie Lockard 18 - Sister In Law
Kelly Lockard 32 - Brother In Law
Sarah Lockard 21 - Sister In Law

This census was enumerated on 23 Jan 1920.

On 4 Feb 1920 Mingo Co., WV, Harrison Baisden married Mattie Lockard daughter of Tom and Liddie Lockard.

I am not sure how the Jim (James) Baisden listed on the 1920 census as brother-in-law fits into the family. I know his death certificate 6 July 1929 in Mingo County names his father as Doc Baisden, but names no mother. He is not listed in the household with Nancy J. Baisden, Harrison's mother. He may have the same father, but a different mother.

The big mystery to me is what Baisden family "Doc" Joshua Baisden belongs to. Please let me know if you have additions, corrections, or questions.
BAISDEN, Sammie 88, of Springfield, Ohio formerly of Delbarton, West Virginia, passed away January 16, 2010, in the Springfield Regional Medical Center.

He was born on May 3, 1921, son of the late Thomas and Emma (Starr) Baisden.

Sammie was a U.S. Army veteran of World War Two, and received numerous decorations and citations, including the Purple Heart medal. Sammie is survived by two children, Bruce Baisden and Brenda G. and husband Anthony Pennington, of Springfield, Ohio.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Xan (Deidra Banion) Pennington, Dejah (Anthony) Fagan, and Tavia Pennington, one great grandson Oriyen Fagan and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including a special niece, Doris Jean Adkins.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Nancy Adair, Emma Stafford and Virginia Stewart, and four brothers Stan, Tom, Dick, and Loranzie Baisden.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME.
Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens

Courtesy Post

Re: Askin and Jetta Baisden

The mystery about Jetta Baisden was answered in the following sources:

1. "Jetta" Baisden was born 8 Jun 1888 in Ridgeway, Missouri. She was the daughter of Martha Hatten and John Smith Baisden. The Medical attendant noted on the permanent birth record was A. B. Barnes of Ridgeway, Missouri. This information may also be found on the Missouri Digital Heritage Index:

http://sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/births.asp?i...

2. This same child was found in the death records listed as Jesse Ada Baisden. It is possible the "Jetta" was either a clerical error or her name was changed. Jesse Ada "Jetta" Baisden died at 9 months 12 days. She died in Ridgeway, Missouri. The cause of death was listed as pneumonia which lasted 3 weeks. A.B. Barnes is again listed as the physician. J. Redinger was the undertaker. Jesse Ada Baisden was buried in the Henry Grave Yard. The Missouri State Archives data base provides details about this death record at:

http://sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/deaths.asp?i...

??????????

I am still looking for Askin Baisden records. When I find them, I'll post the sources here. :)

Since I am unable to delete or edit my previous post, please note the following:

Further research proved that the information I posted about Bo and Sharon Baisden is incorrect. Sharon did not marry Theodore Leroy Baisden II. The information about their children is also in error. Sorry about the mix-up!
