Robert Bajcar just passed away at age of 83, However his father or mother was from Abraham in Slovakia. His aunt and maybe others emigrated to Ohio before that WWII. I remember her when she visited Slovakia in 1960's and remember name Bobko.

Hi, in around 1910 my grandmother, my mother's mother, and her family, Bajcar, came from Bratislawa, which is now in Slovakia. At the time it was considered part of Austria-Hungary. Bajcar doesn't appear to be a common name, so perhaps our ancestors are related back in Bratislawa. My great-grandfather was named Vincent Bajcar and his wife was Elizabeth Bajcar and they had four children, one of whom was my grandmother Anna Bajcar and her brother Francis, sister Veronica, and brother Vincent who died when he was perhaps 18 to 21. I haven't been able to get too much more information because none of the Bajcars are alive, and Francis did not have any children.

What information do you have about them and are your ancestors from Czechoslovakia?

Karen

Hi - (See also my reply on May 13, 2010)

My grandfather and grandmother came from Abraham, Czechoslovakia, which is not far from Bratislawa. My grandparents, Joseph and Maria, came to the USA before WWI also through New York around the same time as yours did. My Grandfather (Joseph) had 5 children: Anna, Marjorie, John Stephan(my father), Joseph, and Victor. My father (John) and mother had eleven children which I am one of.

I will ask my mother and aunt Marjorie if they know Elizabeter or Anna.

I do not know of a Robert. However, my maiden name is Bajcar. My father's first name was John (WWII), my grandfather's was Joseph (WWI), my uncle's was Joe (WWII), and my other uncle was Victor (WWII). All are deceased now but had the unusual name of Bajcar. My grandfather, Joseph, and grandmother, Maria, immigrated to the USA before World War I. I grew up in Ohio and visited relatives in Abraham, Czechoslovakia around 1987 after writing to them from an address I have from an old letter.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

it's interesting that you mentioned about finding the Bajcar name in Poland with Ukrainian ancestry. my mother's mother's last name was Bajcar and she was born in Bratislawa (at the time in Austria-Hungary) but which is now in Slovakia, bordering on Hungary. there are many Hungarian names using the "car" at the end. so I always thought that the Bajcars were definitely from the Slovakia/Hungary area.

Well, my great grand father was from Lwow(Lviv, western Ukraine), and this area at the time was also part of Austria-Hungary(before 1918, after 1918 it was Poland)[he was native Ukrainian].

Anyway, I was suprised that I found many of Bajcar's in Slovakia. Ive always thought this is an Ukrainian origin name, but it seems I could be wrong. Well, from what I know, in Lviv still live ppl with this name(I dont know exact number)...

So, the key word in our discussion is "migration", I think many Slovaks(or maybe Hungarians as you thinks) were looking for new job etc., and they''ve moved from Slovakia(Hun.) to Poland, Ukraine etc...anyway, If you have Bajcar last name, it doesn't meant you are Slovakian origin...or only Slovakian;-)

PS
Im 1/8 Slovakia, coz my great grand mother was from Slovakia...but she wasn't one of "Bajcar clan" members;-)

Regards
Mack

Anyway, many people with this name in Poland, have some Ukrainian ancestors, for example my great grandfather was Ukrainian. I find it interesting that many Bajcar's lives in Slovakia also.

BTW
I wonder how Americans pronounce this name?Correct version should sounds like "Bay-tzar", I hope you pronounce that this way;-)

PS
I hope you will find some relatives in Slovakia.

PSS
sorry for my broken English:-)

Regards
Maciej

The Bajtsar last name is the way my family pronounced it in Slovakia where they were from. I would imagine you wouldn't be too far from there. It was Austria-Hungary way back which may have encompassed a larger area that could have included the Ukraine. Our family pronounced it like Bite-Zar.

Hello,
Does anyone have information about Thomas Bajcar (Slovak spelling), Baiczar (German spelling), Beizar (who knows??) from Modra, Slovakia -- he was my grandmother Irene's father. Her mother was Susanna (Zusanny) Gschwandtner also of Modra. My grandmother and mother came to the US in the early 1900's and settled in Chicago. I'm looking to locate possible brothers/sisters and/or other family of my Grandmother and her parents.
Thanks to whomever can provide help.

Judy

Apparently Stephan and Suzanna are very popular names over there. It also seems like Mihalik and Bajcar are pretty common names also. Probably somewhere way back they are all related...I wouldn't be surprised.

:-)

Kathy

Kathy,

Hello again, I am afraid that I have come to the conclusion that there were two almost identical families in two different places at the same time. Your Stefan Bajcar and Suzanna Michalec of New York and my Stefan and Suzanna of Chicago Illinios. My family only had two children "Sue and Stefan" of which my husband is a decendant of Sue. At one time I thought that they were one in the same but family notes on my family don't match with yours. However, I am sure that we are probably related somewhere back in the old country. My Bajcars are from Vrbove Czechoslovakia, and our Michalecs are from Myjava Rudnick, Czechoslovakia.

Schan

The Bajcar we have in our family was Slovak...Austria-Hungary way back when they came over here on the boat. This is what I have: Katarina and Stefan Mihalik, from Nitra, Czechoslovakia had three daughters,Katherine, Elizabeth and Zuzanna Mihalik.

Anna(Baran) and Stefan Baitzar(I think that's how it's spelled, but it turned Bajcar over here) had two sons: Stefan and Jan(turned John over here). They were from Krajne, Kostolne, Czechoslovakia, near Bratistava. Steven and John came over here on the boat also.

Steven Bajcar married Suzanna Mihalik 9-19-09 and had 10 children, 3 whom are still living. I am the offspring of one of the deceased but am always looking for information on our family. It was nice to see our name posted.

I'll have to send you a copy and another when it's updated which I'm hoping to do this year.

We are really in need of a family reunion again. There are alot of old folk that want to see each other again. The last reunion was 1993 also. It's time...

Kathy
