Stephen M. Bakalyar, of Hebron, was born November 6, 1917 in Lakefield, Minn. and passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2001. Survived by wife, Mildred of 57 years, 4 daughters: Kim (Jack) Neilsen of Washington, Myra (George) Lux of Virginia, Michelle Bakalyar of Valparaiso, and Becky Bakalyar of Hebron; 5 grandchildren: Jill and Anzara Norton, Brian, Jason, & Rachel Lux; sister, Leona Parkovich of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers-in-law: Charles (Kathy) Yeager of Merrillville and Clarenc (Jean) Yeager of Hammond; sister-in-law, Verna McMichael of Dewey, Ariz.; many loving and caring nieces and nephews. Mr. Bakalyar was a member of the church family of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Hebron and was an Elder there for many years. He was a graduate of Purdue University, a retired Lt. Commander from the U.S. Navy having served during World War II and was an instructor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He was the owner and founder of Metachem Laboratories and Thermium, Inc. and was also a former employee of Inland Steel and Glidden Company. Stephen was a son of Mr. And Mrs. Michael Bakalyar who spent 50 years in Lakefield before moving to Lansing, Ill.
