In the Streator Daily News from Streator, Illinois on Friday, May 19, 1916, John Bakalyar's obituary reads:

FORMER RESIDENT DEATH'S VICTIM: JOHN BAKALAR DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE IN LAKEFIELD, MINN., YESTERDAY MORNING. Word was received yesterday afternoon announcing the death of John Bakalar, a former resident of this city, who passed away at his home in Lakefield, Minn., yesterday morning. Mr. Bakalar was one of the early settlers of the city, coming here over fifty years ago. For about twenty-five years he resided in old No. 3 and was very well known here. Later he moved to Minnesota where he resided until his death. Surviving are his wife and eleven children who are residents of Minnesota. Michael left this morning for Lakefield to attend the funeral.

Died at Home in South Lakefield May 17th

Leaves Family of Ten Children All Living and Thirty-Six Grand-Children

Last Wednesday evening at 5 o'clock John Bakalyar Sr. died at his home in south Lakefield after a brief illness, aged 71 years, seven month and nine days.

Deceased was born in Giralt, Saris county, Hungary, October 8th, 1844. He was married Sept. 21, 1870, to Anna Katus and after a few years the young couple decided to move to America, where opportunities for making a livlihood were better. They emigrated to the United States in 1879 and located at Streator, Ill, where Mr. Bakalyar was employed in the coal mines. In March 1893 they moved to Jackson county and purchased a farm in Hunter township where they lived until 1901, when they retired and moved to Lakefield where they have since resided.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bakalyar, all of whom are living, as follows: John Matyas, of this city; Ellen at home; Andrew, of Hunter township; Mrs. Mary Matasovsky, of Minneota township; George, at Brooten, Minn.; Thomas, at Cudahy, Wis.; Steve, at St James, Minn.; Mrs. Robert Schmrch, at Milwaukee, Wis. There are also 36 living grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Slovak Lutheran church in Hunter township, Rev. Hauser, of Minneapolis, preaching in Slovak and Rev. Ristau, of Lakefield, preaching an English sermon. Interment occurred in the Slovak Lutheran cemetery in Minneota township.

Out of town relatives present at the funeral were: Thomas Cizmar, cous'n of the deceased, of Indiana, Harbor, Ind.; Michael Kakara, a nephew of Streator, Ill.; Mrs. Thomas Bakalayar, of Cudahy, Wis.; Mrs. Mary Kuzie, of Indiana Harbor, Ind.; George and Steve Bakalayr, sons, of Brooten and St. James, Minn., respectively.
