Re: Casimer Bal

In researching what I could find in census records, this Casimer Bal family was in Johnstown, PA in 1930. He and his wife, Catherine were both born in Poland and came to the US in 1903. The children, all born in PA were Mary, Murphy, Thomas, Joseph, Edmund, Agnes, Walter, Henry, Adeline and Francis. This agrees with all of the names and birthdates found in the Bible pages: Marie-1910, Murph F.-1911,Tom-1912, Joseph C.-1914, Edmund T.-1915, Agnes M.-1917, Walter J.-1918, Henry E.- 1920, Adeline -1922, and Frances C.-1927. I hope this helps.

hi, my name is Rachel Bal. I live in Florida. All i can really tell you is that my family is of Hawaiian origin. And its a really long story, but our last name was changed many generations ago by a french woman who took custody of a family of children. She changed their last name from the Hawaiian one to her own (Bal) because the hawaiian islands were under french occupation and hawaiian children were prohibited from attending school. I really had no clue where the name 'Bal' was from. I knew it was french, but that was all i knew. if you would like to get back to me, i can tell more and in depth of what i know. all i know is that my great great great something came from hawaii and married a european woman. they both came to america at the same time in the early-late 18-1900s im really not sure. but if you're interested i could talk to my grandfather? i dont know many other people with our last name. and those who i do know, are directly related to me. hope to hear from you.

-rachel

bal.rachel@gmail.com

Re: looking for my roots SEE Piotr part of this article

Bal family. Since it is interesting in its own right I present a brief history of the Bal family since their documented presence in Poland up to say the end of the 16th century. I think that descendants of this family live in Poland until the present time. Bal family appears on the arena of Polish history some time in the second part of the 14th century. The first recorded persons in the family are Petrus Ungarus (Piotr/Peter of Hungary) and his brother Paweł/Paul. Even though sometimes the attribution was different it is rather certain that the Bal family originated in Hungary - the country with which Poland bordered for centuries and had a lot of good contacts up to the hightest (royal) level. Bal brothers (Matjasz and Stanisław from Hoczew) who married into Jedliński family were 5 generations apart from the first of their ancestors to set foot on the Polish (only for 20 years or so at that time) soil. I concentrate on the line of Piotr.
GEN 1: two brothers Piotr (Peter) and Paweł (Paul) are mentioned for sure in 1360s; even though some classify them as Polish nobility they came from Hungary which is today's Slovakia, from a village Bal-potok near Bardejov - almost minutes away from today's Poland/Slovakia (then Poland/Hungary) border. Also their German roots are a possibility - if interested to explore this subject in more depth look for entries on the Taubdeutsche. Piotr is more of interest to us. Although he is referred to in literature rather as Piotr Węgier/Petrus Ungarus (Peter Hungarian) his son and his descendants carry the family name Bal.
GEN 2: Matjasz (in Polish it would be Maciej - Mathew - so at that time the spelling is kept in the native language of the family) Bal, married to Anna
GEN 3: Jan Bal (d. 1480), married to Zuzanna from Siennów, he inherited after his father Brzozowo whose name evolved via Lobetans, Lobotanecz, Nebetanz and Lubotaniec to today's Nowotaniec.
GEN 4: Jan Bal had 3 sons of whom Maciej Bal (d. 1506), the castellan and senator of Sanok continued the line of interest to us; he settled in Hoczew which became the seat of the family at the time. He was married to Anna Weszmuntowska and 3 children with her, 2 daughters (Katarzyna and Barbara) and a son, Mikołaj.
GEN 5: Mikołaj Bal (d. after 1534), married to Helena Tęczyńska. They had 2 sons< Matjasz and Stanisław. Stanisław was married to a daughter of Adam Wzdowski (I never found any proof of Stanisław being married to one of Jedliński daughters. It is not impossible though, he could have been married more than once).
GEN 6: Matjasz Bal (d. abt 1575) was married to Anna Jedlińska, a daughter of Mikołaj Jedliński, the founder and owner of Jedlińsk. They had 6 children:

Jan Bal married to Anna Sienieńska - so there is another connection with a known Unitarian family from Raków (Sienieński family were founders of Raków)

Piotr Bal - he is said to be a founder of the settlement which later became a town called Baligród (the town of the Bals) and remained in the family hands until 1770 (Habsburg invasion preceding the first partition of Poland). He converted to Roman-Catholicism.

Matjasz - died in childhood

Katarzyna

Anna

Samuel

All boys received education at foreign universities. This generation continued but I wanted to show connection with Jedlińsk. Apparently this family remained in the Reformed faith until 1667. Throughout the centuries various members of the Bal family held various official positions to do with the Land of Sanok.

Lionel Naoha Bal and his wife Geraldine Lucille Duffy Bal are my grandparents. Irene Bal was my great grandmother. My brother is Brett Bal, we both reside in Florida.
Both of my grandparents went to the reunion you are speaking of in Hiawii that year, I did not go. I believe my Uncle Adrian Bal went with them too.

Dear balgeri:

Hi! I am mainly interested in Irene Fullmer (b. 10/2/1893) who married Lionel Nahoa Kaaihue Bal (b. 4/24/1883), son of Kaaihue Pa(?) and Zelie Bal Lima Pa(?). The Fullmer surname is my great-grandmother's name (Caroline Amelia Fullmer) and Irene is the niece of Caroline. Does your research contain any information on Irene? Appreciate any help. Thank you, Karen

I would gladly share my information with you. I spoke with Margaret Paoa Miller, sometime in the mid 1980s, and again in the 90s, when i believe Helen (Paoa) died. My father (john bal) and Helen were first cousins. I believe Helen was the youngest grandchild of Eugene and Meeau Maikaaloa Bal. I am the youngest great grandchild of Eugene and Meeau. Helen Paoa started me on my family history journey in the early 80s. She made a Hawaiian quilt for me which is one of my family's greatest treasures. Ive been collecting family history info for over 30 yrs. I hired a professinoal genealogist in France and visited the ancestral home of Eugene Bal in 2001(of La Teste Gironde). I also collected some information on Meeau, her parents, and her sister, Kekaa, who married Edoard Duvachelle. I would be glad to share with you. If you would like to communicate further, pls contact me at Balgeri@aol.com. I am just about to make CDs of my 30 yr project of researching our family history. i used the family tree maker program.
aloha!

Reading through these messages was such a trip for me, because I recognize a lot of these names from our genealogical books that my grandmother kept. My grandmother was Margaret Emma Keaolani Miller (maiden name Paoa). Her mother was Helen Zoller Paoa. My grandmother, Margaret did a lot of research on our family's background, and has an entire box of genealogical information, pictures, etc. She passed away last year, and I feel it is important for me to step up and continue the work she has done. If you have any information on the Bal 'ohana that you can share with me, please do so. I would be happy to share information with you also.

There is tons of people there with the name Bal and Wal. I was told by some man that this name comes from England and it came to Poland around 13th century. I have no confirmation to support this.

Kind Regards

Piotr Bal

Yes you are right it is rare in maharashtra but very well known in punjab. History tells Bals had their kingdom in maharashtra area in 7th century and it was called balabh empire. Later on due to some stuggles moved to Punjab. Furthermore Bals are from the family of world known bhagat Prahlad who's son's name was Bal..I hope this will make you proud that you are from Prahlad family.
I am tracing our family history. I can trace back to Eugene Bal from france who married Meeau. They had children, one who was Zelie Bal. Zelie married Joseph Lima on Feb 13, 1876 in Molokai. Joseph Lima is my great, great, great grandfather and Zelie is my greatx3 grandmother. My grandmas name is Zelie Lima and she and her family including my mother are from Molokai.

I cannot find where Joseph Lima came from. I went to the Hawaii archives, check the passenger ship manifests with no luck. He just appears, but it looks like he was a friend of Eugene Bal.

I have a whole history of E Bal coming over from France, but it doesn't help me trace my hawaiian side. I would love any info you could help me with

Mahalo
Kuupua

Your E-mail address is not recognizable on the message board so you should have it printed in one of your messages. In the 1850 census Refugio Bal is listed as being born in Texas is this right?
I am looking for a Bal family of Santa Rita, N.M., or possibly La Mesilla. Specifically, a Juana Garcia who married a Francisco Bal. Juana's parents were Rosalio Garcia and Felicitas Nanes. I am researching a Fernando Garcia Castillo, who may be related to Juana Garcia. Is anyone in the Bal Family a descendant of Francisco and Juana. Fernando Garcia Castillo was probably born around 1897 or so. Let me know if anyone out there may be familiar with this side of the Bal family. Thanks, Joe Lara Bejarano at molly@etcrier.net
