Hello Leilari,

Thank you for the reply. I will surely look at your family tree. The Pedro Rodriguez Balaguer on my side married a women by the name of Juana M. Soto y Colon. I too am not familiar with the Balaguer side of my family and being that the name is not common, I'm hoping the gathering of available information for this name will be easier than the common names of Rodriguez, Hernandez, Perez, etc. If I find a link between us, I'll contact you. Until then, best wishes!

Hi Maribel,

I have a Pedro Rodriguez Balaguer in my family tree born around 1857 from Lares. His mother, Francisca Balaguer Montalvo was my great great great-grandfather's sister. His name was Manuel Balaguer Montalvo. My family tree (Rivera-Valentin) is public so you should be able to see all the records I've saved and how I made the connections. I don't know anything about the Balaguer side of my family which is why I'm actively searching for more information or any living relative that can shed some light on these people. If you can think of anything else, please let me know.

Thanks,
Leilari

Re: Balaguer's..1890's Phila. ..Joseph, Emilio, Enrique, Frances and John

My notes on Enrique Balaguer......
Enrique Balaguer immigrated to the US in 1881.
He married Juana/Jennie/Jane about 1883. This was probably Jane's second marriage. Jane may have been married to ? Garcia before marring Enrique (1900 census) Jane's daughter, Josephine Garcia, born Oct 1878 in Pa., was listed with this family in the 1900 Phila. census and living on North 20th St.
In the 1910 Phila. fed census, this family was living at 1108 Myrtle St. with 3 of their children, Helen, age 20; Marie, age 14 and Margaret, age 8. Enrique was a cigar maker.
Enrique's wife, Jane, was born in Cuba, and the 1900 census stated that Jane's parents had also been born in Cuba. Jane immigrated into the US abt. 1869 and gave birth to about 12 children, only 4 were alive in 1900, Josephine Garcia born Oct 1878, Anna F. Balaguer born Sept 1884 born in PA, Helen H., born Nov 1889 or 1891 in Pa and Marie born Nov 1895 (1900 Phila. Fed. Census).
Most of Jane's children died in infancy and were buried in Mt. Peace Cemetery, Philadelphia.
Four of the Balaguer infants that were buried in Mt. Peace are: Joseph Henry d. 17 Mar 1887... Jane d. 16 Sept 1894.... Juana or Luana Marie d. 8 May 1888 and Louis b. 8 Jan 1889 (PA. Phila City Death Certs.)
Daughter, Anna F. was born Sept 1884. She married Rafael Ortiz who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1884.. and died between 1918 and 1920. There were 3 children from this marriage... Henry b. 1916 born in Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois. Agnes b. 1910 and Elenore b. 1918.
In 1916, when Anna and Rafael's son Henry was born the couple resided at
6032 May St. in Chicago, Ilinois. After Rafael's death, Anna returned to Philadelphia.
Enrique's daughter Helen H., born Nov 1889, had a daughter named Margaret. They resided with her parents at 1417 Faun St in Phila. (1920 Phila. Fed census).
Enrique's mother, Nemicia, was listed with the family in the 1900 Phila. census.
She was born Sept. 1850 in Cuba and immigrated to the U.S in 1882or 1892.
I have more info on Joseph Balaguer. I believe he was Enrique's father or his brother.

It's been a while since I have worked on the Balaguer's. This is my husband's side of the fam. I have a copy of the ship's papers that show Nemecia(mother), Emilio(son), Gabriela(dau.-in-law) and a child(all Balaguers) being delivered to Enrique Balaguer in Phila. I need to sort through my records and give you my Balaguer findings. I do believe Enrique connects to the other Balaguer's in Phila. At that time, there were only a few of them in the city. Please e-mail me, I have too much to post here.... joyceoboyle@yahoo.com

Am trying to relate this Balaguer line (PA) Enrique (Henery) living in Ward 10 Phila. with wife Jane (census 1900, 10, 20), mother Nemecia. Their youngest daughter Margaret married Charles Babel (shown in 20 census) who is my husband's grandfather. If this is the correct line, please relate to Margaret M. Balaguer Babel in my family line. She divorced Charles Jacob Babel when their daughter Jane was small (my mother-in-law). There is a picture of M.M. Balaguer Babel on Jane's wedding day. This is the only picture of her that I have and I don't know when she died/where she was buried. Can someone confirm that I'm on the right track?

The thing with the name "balaguer" is that some people, who have it in the islands, used to be former workers for the main balaguer family. They owned tobacco plantations in Cuba before the Spanish American war. Then the family in Spain lost their income and moved to America. So some people who lived in the islands of central america are decendants of former workers for the balaguer family and others have the balaguer name due to their bloodline.

Judy,
Hi! I never new that about Don. It was really strange that they called by Uncle Donny- Emil and yet his birth certificate/death certificate said Emilio. My uncle went by Emil and Don. So, you actually knew our grandfather. I've never seen a picture or anything. If you want to email me directly- my email is dbplion@aol.com. I'd like to find out whatelse you know, so maybe we could get a whole picture. Also, I do know that Jaquin Balaguer (a former leader in the Dominican Republic) was a great uncle of ours.
Darlene :)

The name Don...

My grandfather told me that the name Don was a title. It was a title of wealth in Spain and once the King and Queen gave you that title it was handed down to your first male offspring. So my grandfathers name was Don Emil Sanchez something. It was like 5 names. I'll call my father and ask him and post it later. That's weird though because I do remember him having the name Sanchez in his full name. My grandmother didn't know about Yolanda. Another weird thing is that my aunt Jeanette (Emil's, our grandfather, daughter) tried to find a marriage license for Jean and Emil but she was unable to find one. My grandparents never celebrated their anniversary nor did they ever tell anyone the date. My dad knew about your dad and uncle but I don't think they ever meet. I know there were records of the Balaguer Ffamily at the spainish church on spring garden street but I don't know how to attain them. Anyway I promise I'll keep in touch and post some more information later. Hope your summer is going well.
Judy

Family Geneology

Judith,
I am Danny's daughter, so I guess we are half cousins. This is what I know so far. Emil (our grandfather) had divorced my grandmother-Thelma Grander when my father was young. Emil married someone named Yolanda. Thelma married Joe Malinoski years later when my father was a teen. My father didn't know about your grandmother -Jean. Well, whatelse I know so far is- our great grandfather was named Emilio he was from Marseille, France and his wife was Consquala either Santangelo or Sanchez (I'm not sure at this time). She was from Spain. My father said her family started the Spanish Chapel on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia. That's were my father's parents had gotten married. Also, my dad said his grandfather (Emilio) was a strongman/body builder. He use to beat iron pans against his chest. Also, Donny (my Dad's brother, my uncle) passed away in the 80's. His name was really Emilio which means Emil which means Don. I will keep you posted on any further info. that I find and would appreciate it if you would keep me up to date with what you find out. Thanks! Darlene

Balaguer

My grandfather's name was Emil Balaguer and his wife's name was Jean. I know nothing about his Spanish heritage since my father, James Balaguer, didn't talk to him much. If you found any information on Emil or anything on the Balaguer name I would love to hear it. All I really do know about Emil is that he came from a big family, moved on Oakdale Street in Philadelphia. He has to sons but never knew them. Then when he meet Jean, my grandmother, he had a daughter, named Janet, and a son, which is my father. If you know anything or if you could reply I would appreciate it.
