In 1854, he married Emeline Baker, who was living in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois with her parents ink 1850. His oldest brother, Philander was still in New York with his family. Has anyone found Albert?

Thank you for your reply. Thomas Balch b.1774 was a painter. The earliest I can find, he married Elizabeth Bowden in South Moulton, Devon in 1807. He was listed in the 1830 City Directory for Tavistock as a Painter/Glazier.
Does he part of your family tree?

It may be that these people WERE born in Ireland but were baptized in their 'home' town.

A case in point is my 2 x ggrandfather Henry BALCH who m. Elizabeth HIPWORTH. According to the census she was born in Dublin c. 1814. She was baptized in Chippenham in 1829 with her parents abode being shown as Dublin. Elizabeth's father (b. Chippenham 1790) joined the army sometime around 1805/6 and was almost certainly posted to Ireland where Elizabeth was born. A baptism in England doesn't necessarily preclude a birth in Ireland. Baptism either took place when on home leave or was postponed until later.

Incidentally, I have 1 Charles Frederick in my tree and 2 Frederick Charles plus a few other Charles and Frederick's. All Wiltshire or Fordingbridge. Any connections?

Cannot tell you a lot more about this family as still working on their ancestors. However the surname Balch is mainly found in the Somerset area. There are some occurences of Balch on the Latter Day Saints web site for Ireland, but non that I have been able to link to. Strange when Ireland is stated as the birthplace??

I presume you are looking for the birth/bap of Thomas Balch 1774? What was his profession?

I am very interested in learning more about this family especially the Thomas.
My g-grandfather, William Moulder Balch, claimed that his family came from Ireland. However, I found that he was born in 1841 in Tavistock, Devon, England. His father Thomas Bowden Balch was born in Tavistock in 1815 and his g-grandfather, Thomas Balch b. 1774 married and lived in that area as well.
Charles is also a common name in my Balch family. My father was Charles Frederick Balch as was his father.

Just looked at the original record on familysearch.org.
It does say Hannah Baly - and unfortunately there is no other information on the couple, other than their names. They were married by Aaron Hall, but every record states Hannah Baly. When I do a search for Hannah Baly in NH, there does not appear to be a birth record.
There is a record of Joseph Snow and Hannah (Bailey)Snow being buried in Maine.
I looked at the actual birth records of Joseph's children - Joseph & David - and Joanna is listed as the mother... but no maiden name is given.
This is a puzzle. Probably the only way is to find the cemetery and headstone.

I have (7) Snows married to Balches - and that probably does not include all of the female Balches.

Would love to share info.
My email is Balchgenealogy@comcast.net

thanks Bev,
Robin

Robin - I have a ton of notes on the Balchs of Beverly Mass. My Grandmother was an avid amateur geneal. starting in the 1940s. The primary research was for the Snow line (related to Aldens) cause the Snows seem to marry Balches a lot! My primary interest is in Joanna Balch b. 1763 in Keene, NH. Her father Caleb was born in Beverly 17 OCT 1740. Mother Bethiah Lovett.
Joanna was the first wife of my Ancestor Joseph Snow 1760-1845. She must have died before he remarried in 1786.
The record of their marriage in Keene is confusing because it lists a Hannah Baly but my grandmother did a lot of work on this and believed that Hannah Baly was Johanna Balch. I can scan my grandmother's notes it that's helpful, though no guarantees on the timing.

She was killed in a cyclone in the Dakota Territory in 1869.

Which son are you descended from?

My husband's family came from Maryland through the south to Arkansas.
I am very interested in your project. I am descended from the New England branch and my husband from the Maryland branch. We have a copy of the Galusha book and have looked up our lines. My husband has done more research than I have but we are both just signing on to Ancestry.com.We haven't started to enter our information after Galusha but will be doing that soon.

What can I do to add to or access your work?

Any information, I have/am doing what I can through google, ancestry, and new england genealogical society. I have over 7,000 Balches in the genealogy at this time.
I would like to sell the genealogy, with the proceeds going to the Beverly Historical Society, which maintains the Balch House. On the CD would be everything that I have in pdf format, along with an individualized ancestry report for the person who purchases.
Thats the plan, if I can ever finish - I keep finding more information to add.

Balch DNA Project Update

I'm pleased to announce that much progress has been made on the DNA front. I'll try to summarize the results here.

- We've established that the Beverly, MA Balch line, the Maryland Balch line, and miscellaneous Balches with roots in Devon and London, England are all from the same Balch family with roots in Somerset, England.

- There appear to be some DNA mutations that differentiate the New England Balch line from the others.

- In the Maryland Balch line, there are DNA mutations that appear to distinguish the John son of Hezekiah branch from the James son of Hezekiah branch.

- The one descendant of Rev. Hezekiah Balch via his son John Tenant Balch who has been tested DOES NOT match the Balch. Somewhere in this donor's paternal line, an adoption, illegitimacy or infidelity took place that resulted in male Balch being born who was not a Balch genetically. We need to get more descendants of Rev. Hezekiah tested so we can determine when this happened.

- Likewise, the only descendant of John of Beverly, MA's grandson Freeborn who has been tested also did not match. We need more descendants of Freeborn to be tested.

We'd love to have more Balches tested. Please e-mail me if anyone is interested, but note the donor must be a male still carrying the Balch surname.

Jane
Volunteer Balch Y-DNA Admin

Harriett Baulch (1843-1901)

I have a relative that was born in Savannah. I have 3 UK census citations that say it was South America, Savanah. In the 1861 census it shows Harriett Belch with her younger brother Henry, British Subject from the West Indies and Harriet from South America, Savanah. Prior to the Civil war it was South America. I have been told though, that there are at least 5 or 6 Savannah's in the US.

I have been unable to find Henry every again. Harriett married George Cooper jnr (alledged illegitmate son of The Earl of Shaftsbury brothers grandson) Earl of Shaftsbury owned land in Savanah and also Barbados. Bristol was the main slave trade port in the UK. A lot of Coopers in Bristol were Creole's.

I am trying to find any information as to the parents of Harriett and Henry. I would not be surprised if Harriett was only born while on route in Savannah from Barbados or UK, but nothing to support that.
