Good day,

I am just beginng to trace my g-grandmother's Balcomb family further back. My line is in Ontario and traces back from there, through Nova Scotia to Henry Balcom in the USA.

I too would like to trace Henry's ( and our) roots further back. When Henry sailed to the USA it was during the time of a large pilgrimage. I have a Holt family line that were involved as well - sailing to Boston in 1635. All tradesmen were in demand back then. How they decided where they settled is a good question - I suspect it was a combination by looking around and being convinced by others. I also suspect some were indentured to someone and followed them to where they settled in America.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

John

Balcom Family of Nova Scotia and Massachusetts

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to gather information on the Balcom family which seems to have bounced back and forth between Massachusetts and Nova Scotia (I guess they helped "colonize" Nova Scotia after the French and Indian war).

My "starting" Balcom is William Wallace Balcom, b. 13 Mar 1875 according to his Naturalization Papers. According to a source I found, his parents are Pelimon Balcom and Susannah Matilda Gossip. (This source is a book available via Google titled The History Of Colorado, where Pelimon did business). I got most of Pelimon's tree back to Henry Balcom in about 1680 from the same source.

First, I'm looking for a primary source linking Pelimon to William. Pelimon is listed as remarrying by 1884, so I would also like information about Susannah Matilda Gossip. Her parents are listed as James Gossip and Sarah Ann (Unknown).

Does anyone out there have information to share?

Henry Balcom (abt 1640) husband of Sarah & Elizabeth Haynes

Is anyone doing any research on the parentage of Henry, beyond that of Neil Balcom or the online family trees?

Was Sarah's last name really Smith. Vital records in Charlestown, MA are written in such a way as to confuse Henry's occupation: smith (blacksmith) with Sarah's last name.

As it was rare for immigration from Sussex to Boston at this time, how/why did Henry get there?

Towns were in competition for blacksmiths. How did Henry choose Charlestown? The first records of him in Charlestown appear to be in 1665 when he was formally admitted, but he had enough prestige to selected as constable. Did he own land at that time--first land purchase seems to be in 1669 when he bought land near what is now Navy Pier in Charlestown/Boston?

How did Henry meet Elizabeth Haynes? Did he spend some time in Sudbury between Sarah's death his marriage to Elizabeth. Since the marriage is formally recorded in Charlestown vital records (but taking place in Sudbury), did she spend time in Charlestown? She was not admitted to the church in Charlestown until 1669, corresponding to the date when Henry purchased land. Where did Henry & Elizabeth live between their marriage in 1666 & land purchase in 1669?

Where are Henry & Sarah Balcom buried? The first Charlestown cemetery was near the land that Henry purchased, but there is no record of either there.

Hopefully the restoration to the Sudbury Cemetery will identify Elizabeth's grave where she is reported to be buried among her parents and children.

Interestingly, I knew Barbara Balcom (and her family) before she died at an early age. She's buried in Pilot Mtn Cemetery which is in Surry County, NC, not WY.

Barbara always had a lot of American Indian things in her home and thru the wonders of the web I've finally found out why.

Bob

I'm really sorry. You're right ! Daniel Hunt & Polly were the parents of Royal B. Balcom. But did you know about the "Chapel of the Transfiguration" ? I used it as my screen saver, it's so beautiful. I guess Royal Hunt Balcom built it in 1925 in the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Also, there's an exhibit of the Shoshonee tribe that was donated by his daughter Barbara Balcom-Fulk -burried at Pilot Mt. Cemetery in Wy. He also had daughters Elisabeth & Margaret. Carrie Cottle's real name was Carolyn. Look for history of Santa Barbara Co. state of Cal.

Hello,

I have the parents of Royal Hunt BALCOM as R. B. BALCOM and wife Louisa which is from the 1880 Huron County, OH census, Norwalk township. R. B. was 38 and wife Louisa was 37 and Royal was 9 months. Are you saying the parents of R. B. Balcom were Daniel and Polly?

These are not my lines but connect into the FULK lines in Surry County, but I'd welcome any information you want to share.

I was in contact with some of the descendants, but since it was back 6-7 years ago his email might not be valid now.

Bob

I believe we are cousins. My father, Sidney Thomas Emary was the youngest son of Thomas and Sarah Emary of Sevenoaks, Kent. He was born May 18, 1899. He had one sister named Jane who died in Albany NY in childbirth in the 1930's and was married to Walter Brown. He also had a sister Florence who did not emegrate to the US. He had 4 brothers: 2 were deceased early in the 1900's Charles and Henry, also 2 brothers that died after my dad's death in 1966, John, who he called Jack, and Leslie. I believe after Jack and Leslie's wives died that they went back to England to live.
