Santa Isabel was founded by franciscan missionaries in 1668. The villge was originally named Santa Isabel de Tarahumaras. The town was renamed in 1932 for General Angel Trias, sucessfully expelled the French from Mexico and who served during the Mexican-American War. The town has been renamed Santa Isabel.
