Bale Milling Odyssey

I have had a book digitalized which is available free to see at books.google.com
Just go to the site and put in my name Judy Hurdle or the name of the book "Bale Milling Odyssey" and it should come up. It is the history of three generations of millers that were named Bale in NJ, KY and IL. I ran out of printed copies but it is available free to anyone who wants to read it. Parts of it are pretty dry but there's some fun info also.

No, I haven't researched the Bale line at all as it is not directly connected to me. The Bales are connected to an indirect line of my McKellars and was previously trying to connect up a few dots. Appears that some of the Bales married McKellars more than once and then toss in a Russell or 2 into the mix and it all becomes quite confusing!

Colleen

Have you had any luck in tracking old George back farther than his arrival (presumably in Canada, although he could have come through the States) in 1852?
I've come across some references indicating that he and Richard might have been semi-itinerant farm labourers in the parishes around Bideford, but the identifications aren't certain, and I've been able to find no emigration or immigration records in which the birth dates agree with the gravestone data.

I have no record of the daughter Agnes, but assuming she did exist it makes sense that she might have married a Malcolm McKellar, because George Bale married a Margaret McKellar on Aug. 4, 1875.

There is a graveyard attached to Trinity United Church just north of Hickson, Ontario, filled with Bale graves, including, as I interpret it, Richard's father, George (1790-1854), his uncle Richard (1798 - 1882) and those of numerous children, George (1852 - _____), Anne (1851 - 1851), Flora (1854 - 1932), James (1855 - 1931), Martin (1857 - 1933) and Blanche (1859 - 1944).

Flora's grave is in that of her husband, Thomas Swift Russell (1857 - 1933).

I can e-mail you a photo of the stone if you wish.

Put in my name, Judy Hurdle, or the name of the book and the book will come up. It incluces pictures of the three mill sites in IL, KY and NJ.

Thanks for your message. How close are you to Lafayette? There was more than one Bale mill. Henry built one in Lafayette and his sons moved away from there and built another one in Baleville, NJ area. My book "Bale Milling Odyssey" is available at books@google.com without charge. Just type in my name, Judy Hurdle, or the name of the book. There are pictures a man took for me at the mill site in NJ the book. If you have a digital camera it would be fun to see the site of the millpond. Again, thanks.

Old Stagecoach Road in Hampton -- Baleville area?? Henry Bale had a grist mill & forge on the Paulinskill in Lafayette, from about 1750. His sons Peter & Henry Jr. moved downstream, ran a mill there, and Baleville grew up around it. I'd love to hear more about your house. I'll continue this in an Ancestry Message note.

I have no idea if im confused or not.. You mention Bale Mills. The Paulinskill River...I own a house that was baught from a member of the "jones" family on the same river. The house had a mill next to it across the river right down from bale mills pond. Again i may be mistaken. The house is on old stage coach road in hampton if you were wondering.

Hi again Mark,

I do not want to be awkward or try to suggest I have all the answers and truth, but I will try and see if we can clarrify/correct a few points, and hopefully help you to head in a different and hopefully correct direction.

I am afraid I think you and your wife may still be confused, and so I will aim to help where I can, but I think that you have problems with ages/dates of Bales you talk of, and thus the true "Time-Line".

I am also in touch with Gazydazy, and have confirmed her links with the Bales that I have links with. The Frederick Henry Bale who is Gazydazy's great grandfather was born in 1882 in Culmstock, Devon, so in no way can he be (as you claim) the father of your Grandfather's sister Selina if she was born in 1881!!!. So that link in the chain is Broken.

I believe you think that your Great Grandmother was Lavinia Marriott. If that is true, then I have a problem with your statement that Frederick Henry Junior was made head of the family prior to the 1911 UK Census, as the Frederick and Lavinia in Woolwich in 1911 are 55 and 50 respectively, which ties up with them being 10 years older than their ages given in the 1901 census, and I still can not see any sign of a Frederick Henry Bale age about 12 in the London area in 1911.

As far as I can see from records that I searched when checking links to my related Bales, The Frederick that married Lavinia Marriott was Born in Culmstock about 1856 and was married to her at East Stonehouse in 1880. He was a Mariner, and they lived around East Stonehouse (A naval area of Plymouth, Devon) for at least 17 years together. They then appeared to move to London in about 1897 to the Woolwich area and it looks like he worked at the Woolwich Arsenal. There was a son Frederick Henry Bale born to them in about 1899, but as previously stated I could not find this son (nor his sister Eveline) in the Woolwich area in the 1911 Census, so had assumed they had died as juveniles.

Based on age/dates, and the Culmstock birth, I believe Lavinia Marriott's husband Frederick is the son of Henry & Ann (Nee Moon) Bale.

Do you have original documentation (not recent copies of certificates) that prove a link with Lavinia Marriott? Do you have any of your Grandfather's original documentation,e,g. his original birth or marriage certificates would obviously be a help?

If you still wish to discuss other possible ties with earlier Bales please do reply.

Regards

Richard

Hello Richard,

My wife and I get comfused and there are 3 Fredrick Henry's. 1. Fredrick Henry born 1855. married Lavinia( my grandmother in 1895.) Their son Fredrick Henry 1899 was born.

Fredrick senior moved to usa and was nationalised in 1905 with his new wife Florence G Higgins. Fredrick Henry jr was made the head og=f the family in the 1911 census as he was the only male in the house. This is found in the 1920 census usa.

Fredrick Henry jr met Beatrice Cutts and my father- Fredrick Henry was born in 1924.

If this a little confusing ...join the club!! We have made contact with the family and it is getting ever larger!!!

Regards

Mark

Mark,

If that is the case, what was your grandfather doing in 1911, because as far as I have been able to make out both he and Evelyne do not appear at home with some of the other family members in the 1911 UK census yet he would only have been about 12 at the time?

P.S. I think the Half brothers and sisters bit is a red herring as their father Frederick Henry Bale emigrated to the USA in 1906, and so would not have been in the UK Census along with your grandmother Lavinia in 1911!!!!.

Regards

Richard

Hi :-)))0
I have a James BALE (Bach. of this Parish) marrying a Mary GILLARD (Spinster, of Culmstock, Devon) in 7 Oct 1819 in Wellington, Somerset.
I know there were BALE's in Culmstock, having looked at the Microfilm at local LDS Fam. History Room of the Bishops Transcripts for the Parish of Culmstock. But, I didn't see an entry for a James BALE in 1786........
IS it possible that your J BALE is my James BALE ????????
You can contact me at ccrawfordau@yahoo.com.au
James BALE was one of my 2 x Great Grandfathers :-)
Looking forward to hearing from you on what you think?????
All the best,
Christine
PS
I have heard that there was/is a cottage that was called Bale's Cottage? Can't remember now if it was in Middlesex, Wales or else where?
If you have a 1881 or was it 1891 British Census entry with a Charles Albert HALE visiting a BALE family, this will link into my family......
Fingers crossed,
Christine

Hi, I am also seeking information on Native American Heritage. My grandmother, Maranda Marcum Bale was Native American according to my father and uncle. She married William J. Bale when she was 16 and he was 19. My father was George Bale. Maranda's parents were Green Berry Marcum and Rebecca Trent who died a few weeks after Maranda was born. The names are different except for the last name is similar. Please let me know if anything matches up with your research. Green Berry Marcum did have a daughter named Mary born around 1878. Could there be a connection? Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Jill (assumption based on Acestry.com name),

The Frederick Henry in my Niece's Tree had a Father Herbert, Grandfather Henry and Great Grandfather John, he did have a 1st cousin once removed who was called Frederick, whose Father was a Frederick and thus his Grandfather was the John above (their common ancestor). If this was the same family as your husband's however the younger Frederick had sons Cecil Courtney Bale and Clement S. J. Bale, who would have to be Mark's Brothers or similar.

I am in Devon, England, where are you?

Living in hope that there are some Bale relations in USA or Canada out there somewhere!

Regards

Richard
