Does not appear to be the same Jesse Bales, as our Jesse died in 1935, Lenoir City, Loudon, Tennessee, and is buried at Mt. Carmel, Mosheim, Greene, TN.

He did not live to the 1966.

Their is another Jesse Bales who lived in Hamblen, TN, but even though he was close to the same age he is not kin that I know of.

Sorry I don't think their is a connect to us.

I understand my ancestors came from that area and one of them moved to Ga after the Civil War. My grandfather was Jesse Bales. Not sure when he was born but he died in 1966, in his nineties. He was a school teacher for 50 years. My father was Henry (1919-1973) and my uncle was Robert Lee Bales, who died in 1974. By the way, my oldest son is Jesse.

Marcus Bales
Alpharetta, Ga.

I know my family lived in and around Sevier at the time of the Civil war.I understand there were three sons-one fought for the south, one for the north and one did not fight.
after the war the one that fought for the south moved to Ga. His son was Jesse Bales. Jesse had two sons, Henry, my father, and Robert Lee Bales.
I believe this info is correct.

Marcus Bales, Alpharetta, Ga

Here is some information about the parents of John Bales, John and Elizabeth Scott. They were married in Town of York"

1 December, 1823, Banns, John BALES, bachelor, and Elizabeth SCOTT, spinster, both of this parish. Witnesses, Arthur McNEIL and Jane SCOTT.

The witness Jane Scott was probably her sister Jane who married Jonah Hugill in St.James also.

Elizabeth's brother was Jonathan Scott, butcher of Toronto, who married Sarah Harries of Weston.

They are all 3 mentionned in the 1825 will of John Scott.

There is an article about the Bales children in :
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=782518

where Elizabeth is mistakenly called Smith.

Hi
I found the following about Joseph Bales of York twp, and it mentions that his brother John Bales is in Michigan;

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=782518

There is a mistake on that page because it says that Elizabeth Bales, mother of John is nee Smith. She is actually nee Scott, born in Yorkshire. I am interested because Elizabeth Scott is the sister of Jonathan Scott, butcher of Toronto who is my husband's ancestor. I have a lot of Scott information including where they are born in Yorkshire and Jonathan's will, his father John Scott's will, where he names his daughters, and descendants list.

I only have a few baptism and marriages for Bales family.

Her maiden name was Neal. I live several hours from my family now but on my next visit will get the family bible to give you more info. Please let me know if any of you are still researching this. My mother has lots of information that she found before you passed away in 2002. I have it all, but scattered in many notebooks, notes, pieces of paper. I am trying to get it all together and share it with another cousin that recently was in touch with me.

I am looking for information on Henry Pryor Bales. He was born in Mississippi in 1858. He married Susan Anderson of Brown County, Texas sometime just before 1880. Annie, their first child, was born in Colorado. They are in Texas again in the 1900 census. By then, they have 9 children. Susan died in 1936 and is buried in Ft Worth, Texas. I have located the graves of two of their sons. I just can't find out what happened to Henry....among other things.

Thanks.

My gggrandfather, Thomas Jefferson Bales, was one of the older children of Russel, born in 1844 in Virginia. I have not found him in the 1870 census, but in 1865 he married Lucy Catherine "Ann" Reams in Laurel County Kentucky and my ggrandmother Jane Ann Bales was born there in 1867. In 1880 the family appears in Kansas census but Thomas and Jane both died in Laurel County so at some point they came back.

The Alexander Burness you refer to below is Alexander Low Burness, who died 19 January 1883 in Winnipeg. I am not sure whether his wife's name was Bales or not, and would be very interested if you find anything on that. As far as I know, they didn't have any children. You can find more on Alexander on my website at: http://www.burness.ca/p855.htm#i8549

According to what I have gathered Nathan Bales is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetary in Jewel County Kansas. He is my husband's ggggrandfather through William and Mary Bales. They were murdered near Rubens, Ks. 1911. I do have copy of article from newspaper.

Russell Bales is my gggrandfather. In the 1860 census (index record attached), he and his wife (Sarah Mark) and their living children are, in fact, living in Jackson County, Kentucky. [Nancy, shown in this census as 1/12 year old is my ggrandmother]. There was an 8th child, stillborn on 18 Jan 1859 [Kentucky Birth Records].

Of greater interest to me is where the "first family" is in the 1870 census. None of the children from the Bales/Mark marriage appear to be living with Russell & LouAnn in Laurel County, Kentucky in 1870 (census record attached). I have been unable to find the younger children (John Ewing, Martha, and Nancy Emma) in 1870 at all.

Thomas Jefferson Bales is my great grand uncle. Though he is not in my direct line, I did find his death certificate in ancestry.com Kentucky Death Records (attached). He was born 21 Nov 1844, died 31 May 1921 and was buried 1 June 1921 in Southern Cemetery. He is listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedule (attached).

His parents were Russell Bales and Sarah Mark. I do not have "sourced" birth / death dates or locations for either of the parents. Sarah (Mark) Bales died around 1862. Russell Bales remarried and, ultimately, moved to Iowa, where he died (Van Buren County) sometime in 1894. I found one reference to his burial in Spencer Cemetery, Stockport, (Van Buren County), Iowa, but this is not confirmed.

Russell Bales' parents seem to be Vincent Bales (sometimes spelled Beals) and Johanna Breeding. Both were born in Virginia. I do not have definitive source material for this connection.

I am a descendant of James Andrew Booth (born 1864 or 1865). He married Mary Jane Allen and I believe also her sister Molly (they could be the same person). Andrew Lewis Booth and Annie Laura Brown were my grandparents and lived in Wilkinson County GA. I am pretty sure we are related to some of the Bales of Baldwin County, GA as well. I would really appreciate any info you can share.

I am seaching for any information on Sarah Catherine "Kitty" Bales, b.1849 Tenn / d.1933 Hunt Co., Tx)
She first married Jacob C Cate 1869 in McMinn Co. Tn. Jacob died 1876, McMinn Co., Tn.,she had 3 children with Jacob, Mary Elizabeth b 1870, Ada b 1873, and Charles Lee b 1875.

She later married James Bryant (Briant) Feb 2, 1882, and bore another child, Eula T Bryant b 1887.

I am at a brick wall as far as Kitty is concerned. The only info I have found that is even remotely close (date of birth) if a 1860 Census for Sevier Co, Tn., that lists Calvin Bales and Elizabeth as parents. Elizabeth was noted as being INSANE.

Any information would be grateful.
Thanks for the post James. You have filled in some very useful information for me. I am the second cousin of Ann Emily Jackson. I trust that you are her grandson.
You say that you read the information about the Bales in Emily Victoria's diary. She was my grandfather's (Frederick William) younger sister. Is there any other information about the Brown descendants in this diary? I would be very interested in learning more. Coincidently I learned something about Emily Victoria's uncle John and his brothers from his 1851-1854 diary. About five years ago I gave this to a descendant of John Brown who lives in Ottawa.
I have heard your surname before, perhaps from my 2nd cousin Betty McQuillan.
Curious to see if there were any other details I could get from the Winnipeg newspapers, I found the Manitoba Daily Free Press's account of Alex Burness's death:

"A man named Alex. Burness, aged 37, for some time foreman in E. Griffith's cement pipe works, on Point Douglas Avenue, was on Saturday morning found dead, lying in front of the furnace at the works. The cause is believed to have been excessive drinking. The man had been seen by Jas. Whitaker the evening before, when he was complaining of feeling unwell. When Whitaker left him a good fire was burning in the furnace. This was after six o'clock in the vening. When Whitaker returned the next morning he found Burness dead. The deceased came from Chicago last spring, accompanied by his wife, who, however, returned about a week ago."

Manitoba Daily Free Press, 22 January 1883, page 8, col. 2

I am looking for anyone who has information about the descendants of John Bales and Jane Porter who were living in Chicago in 1880. Their family was as follows:

Parents:
John Bales, born about 1827 in Canada
Jane Bales (née Porter), born about 1828 in Canada

Children
Lillie Bales, born about 1853 in Canada
Ida Bales, born about 1858 in Canada
Ettie Bales, born about 1863 in Canada
William Bales, born about 1866 in Canada
Albert Bales, born about 1868 in Canada

Possible Child:
Louie Burness (possibly née Bales), born about 1855 in Canada

Possible Son-in-law:
Alex Burness, born about 1848 in Scotland

Their address in the 1880 US Federal Census was listed as 3303 Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.

Any information on descendants of this family would be most appreciated as they were my Great Great Grandmother's first cousins who she visited in 1881 and 1882 during which time she kept a diary that I am annotating with the intent of publishing it.

Excellent! Thank you!

The diary mentioned that Mr. Burness was planning on heading to Manitoba from Chicago. This would have been in late 1881/early 1882. Sad that it didn't work out for him so well...

Re: Jane Porter marries Bales in Ontario

Jane Porter (born about 1828) married John Bales. I am not sure when they married.

They had five children, Lillie (b. abt 1853), Ida (b. abt 1857), Ettie (b. abt 1863), William "Willie" (b. abt 1866) and Albert (b. abt 1868).

In the mid-1870s, the Bales family moved from Ontario to Chicago, Illinois. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, they were living at 3303 Cottage Grove Avenue.

This I have glean from Emily Victoria Brown's diary she kept from June 1881-May 1882 in which time she goes to Chicago to visit Uncle John and Aunty Jane Bales.

Hope this helps!
