Re: Dr George BALFOUR of Norfolk, VA

Ms. Boll,
I noticed your query. A few years back, I received a family tree from Gordon Cotton, curator of the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg.
The names of (1st surgeon) Dr. George's children are: George, James, John, Ebazar, William (T.), Danna, and Sarah. The tree continues only for William(T.)'s family. To my knowledge George, Ebazar and William (T.) were medical doctors. I know nothing about the other children at this time. I have attached a copy of the simple, typed family tree given to me by Mr. Cotton. If you would like, I can send you the simple, typed family tree that Gordon Cotton gave me a copy of. I have tried to attach it to this but have had no luck in doing so.
My cousins and I search for the relationship between Dr. George and our gggrandfather, William Balfour. They were approximately the same age. Our William's son William Lovett Balfour was a planter in Mississippi and was treated for illness and died in 1857 in Dr. William T. Balfour's home in Vicksburg. Any information that you might beable to provide would, of course, be greatly appreciated. I apologize for any misspellings.
Jim Balfour

Is anyone connected to the old story about a Lord Balfour who would not let his daughter marry so they eloped? Does anyone have any actual names and/or dates? This story has been handed down in my family for generations. We know we have Kanes and Gilmours from near Lisnaskea (Garvagh and Farrentemple, e.g.).

We're really baffled. Any guidance would be deeply appreciated.

Hello, My grandfather was an Alexander Balfour.(1878 - 1974) He was actually born in England where his dad, also Alexander Balfour was working at the time. His family was from County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and after their time in England the family returned to Fermanagh to farm. I am not having a whole lot of luck working back beyond his parents. His father was also Alexander Balfour. I believe they lived in a place called "Drummally". Grandfather had a brother Francis Johnson Balfour who lived in "Teemore" These places are not far from Enniskillen. If you asked Grandad where he was from he would say Enniskillen. I would like to hear form any Balfours in the area to figure out how the lineage actually works out. Moira

Thank you, John. Since my first post in this thread I have learned a great deal about Balfour Guthrie and its ramifications. I was able to get hold of a copy of the history of Balfour Williamson and Co, and its connections.

Balfour Guthrie and Co was founded as an offshoot of Balfour Williamson and Co of Liverpool and Valparaiso. The founders of this were Alexander Balfour, David Duncan and Stephen Williamson.

When the San Francisco company was set up, the key men were Alexander Guthrie (Stephen Williamson's brother-in-law), Robert Balfour and Robert Brodie Forman, a cousin of Alexander Guthrie's second wife. I can't lay my hands on the book at the moment to check all the details.

When do you think your photo was taken?

I believe that one of the men may have been my maternal great grandfather, Seth Frank Alden who later owned the S.F. Alden & Co (Pacific coast agents). Housed in the Rialto Building in San Francisco. This is just a guess. In an old undated photo I scanned for my Mother (Joan Riesenberg, whose father was Felix Riesenberg who wrote on the Chronicle staff with Herb Caen back in the day), S.F. Alden is standing with 3 other men. On back of photo is written:

"Bakersfield Calif. on location Oil Fields. S.F. Alden, general manager, Balfour & Guthrie".

email me if you want a copy of the pic. Unfortunately it is undated and someone has drawn an arrow in the pic to indicate S.F. Alden. I'm going to try to photoshop it out.
Just saw that I can include attachment. Photo image attached.

Sending original back to my Mother.

John Barrett
Nashville, TN
jcbarrett2003@yahoo.com

Dr George BALFOUR of Norfolk, VA

I am hoping someone has a complete list of the offspring of Dr George Balfour, first Surgeon General of the United States Navy, who was born 26 Sept 1771 (probably at Little England, Hampton, Virginia), died 27 August 1830 in Norfolk, Virginia, and is buried next to the east wall of St John’s Episcopal Church in Hampton, Virginia. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Oswald) Balfour, and five children. I have managed to identify the following children, but there would seem to be two more children as yet unidentified:
1. Charlotte Balfour, b. ca. 1800, d. after 1860 probably in Norfolk, never married
2. George Balfour (also a Navy surgeon), b. ca. 1803, married Eliza Ann Long on 14 Aug 1821, d. 8 Sept 1823 in Louisville, Kentucky
3. James O Balfour, b. ca. 1805, d. 7 June 1828 probably in Norfolk
4. Eleazar Oswald Balfour, b. ca. 1810, wife’s name unknown, d. 1863 in Norfolk, buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk
5. William Taylor Balfour, b. ca. 1812, moved to Vicksburg, MS prior to 1850

Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I am tracing the same Balfour's. James Balfour was Isabella's brother, the son of William Balfour and Anne Lunny. Have you gone back any further? I think that Williams father was also James? I am really curious as to how they can be related to the Balfours of Burleigh when that family dies out in the late 1700's. Any insight as to how so many Balfours are in Fermanagh when they are clearly not related to the original Planters?

I haven't got a lot of detail on Mary Anne yet - she's down my list, but if I dig anything up I'll pass it on. So far - she was born in 1850 in the Canary Islands and died in 1874. Two daughters 1. Alice Christian Guthrie b. 1873 California, USA; 2. Mary b. 1874 California, USA.
Mary Anne's parents are Christian Turnbull (b. 2 Apr 1813, bapt. 18 Apr 1813, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland; d.28 Jan 1900 Bridge of Allan, Scotland of Influenza) m. 05 Jun 1840, St. Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh, Scotland to James Swanston, a Merchant and Landed Proprietor (b. 20 Feb 1798 Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland, bapt. 14 Mar 1798 Haddington; d. 11 May 1855 Glasgow of 'Inflammation of the lungs')
Would love info on Mary Anne's descendants.
Hi there, I've been chasing Robert Brodie Forman, and found him to be a partner in Balfour Guthrie & Co. His mother, Jane Turnbull is the sister of my husband's 2x great grandfather, Richard Turnbull. In 1898 Robert Balfour, Alexander Guthrie and Robert Brodie Forman launched a suit in Washington - 'Balfour et al v. Parkinson et al'. Alexander Guthrie married Robert's cousin Mary Anne Swanston - she died and he then married Mary Anne Fairbairn. Jane Turnbull's sister Frances was stepmother to Mary Anne Fairbairn. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Dean.

Basically, I am interested inanyone named Guthrie or Williamson, because all those of either surname connected with the various companies are related to me.

I am also, and especially, interested in Thomas Binny, who was employed by Balfour Guthrie and Balfour Williamson in San Francisco. He resided in the Pacific Union Club, of which he was secretary, in 1901, having entered the USA in 1883. He blew his brains out in a hotel room in Portland, Oregon on 10 May 1906. (Family tradition said that he died in the SF earthquake on that date.) I would like to know how he came to be employed by Balfour/Guthrie/Williamson in the first place, and why he committed suicide. It doesn't seem to have been financial, because he left a significant estate - over £10,000 sterling - which went to his brothers and sisters in Scotland, including my great-grandmother.

Thanks for the book title. I'm In Martinez, Contra Costa, California, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. The letter-books are only just being inventoried. They are probably the only copies. If you are interested in them, I could help you. Fortunately, each volume is indexed by name of correspondent. Give me names and years and I can check the indexes for you. Are you in Glasgow area? My ancestors stopped off there for a generation on their way from Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty, to America. They escaped from the Wynds of Glasgow, not the manor houses.

The book is 'Heirs of Great Adventure' by Wallis Hunt, and it was published in 1951. I have just located and ordered a second-hand copy which should be with me in a week or so.

I can certainly write you a paragraph or three about the Guthries and Williamsons and their connections (the father of these Guthries was the Rev Thomas Guthrie, famous as the founder of the Edinburgh Ragged Schools; Williamson's eldest son was raised to the peerage as Baron Forres of Glenogil; and the theatrical impresario Tyrone Guthrie was a descendant), but I'll need to wait for the book again to do the Balfour and sundry others.

Where are you? And where might these letter books be available to look at?

Dear Forfarian,

I'm glad that you have been able to make progress. What is the title of the company history? Would you be willing to write me a paragraph on the Guthrie partners? I'm in the process of describing some of the collections held at the Historical Society here, and such background would be welcome. One of the most fascinating components of the collection is the some 4,000 pages of private letter books written 1906-1920.

Dean McLeod

Thank you, Dean.

I have actually made quite a lot of progress with this since posting the original message.

The company was originally based in Liverpool, one of two or three interlinked companies including Balfour Williamson and Co.

There is a history of Balfour Williamson and Co, and I was able to borrow a copy through my local library. This does contain some family information about the founders, though it requires a bit of teasing out!

Briefly, the Guthrie was one of mine, and the Williamson married his sister. The Balfour was not related, and neither were the other partners of the various companies.

I'll have to plan a visit to London, but there is plenty material in Scotland to keep me busy here for some time.

Many thanks.

I don't have specific details on the family history, but do have some knowledge of the business records. I suspect that the family material might be quite easy to locate, as the company was a huge multinational, based in London. Some of their records for the period after the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 have survived. I recall reading something about the company in one of the Merchant Marine periodicals during WW I.

Hi
Tidying up my Tree I find I also have Helen PATON & John SYME as the parents of Marion Balfour SYME from her M Cert as discussed in this message, and others posted 2005.
(Not my research, and not on my direct line but linked via several Sneddon's who married into the Syme & Easton families and carried the Syme name down as a middle name in later generations.
