I am not sure either that they are the same Peter. Very possibly Peter Balkema 32, on the 1860 census went to Wiscon and married Tryntje Scholtens Baar. Have you found her parents?
I can't find them anywhere.
Wilma J. Vande Berg
Gr. So. So. Gen. Soc.
Sioux Center IA

There may have been two Peter Balkemas. It was not uncommon when a child died, that the same name was given to the next born of the same sex. I have found that occurring in other Dutch lines. Please tell me where you found the records of the two births? I would like to look them up and make copies of the records.
Pat

Balkema ancestry

I am in the process of researching the ancestors of Jakob Harms Balkema from Groningen. Jakob may be related, but he lived earlier (born about 1800). I have found that the Family History Centers of the Mormon church have access to birth and marriage records for Groningen. The records are in Dutch. However, the centers also have available a handy guide to Dutch words and some centers have access to people who can translate Dutch to English. You can find the center nearest to you by going to www.familysearch.org, clicking on the Library tab, then clicking on Family History Centers. Fill in the blanks and hit Search. It will list the centers in your area.
