Dear Michelle,

The project is going slowly. I have managed to track down a lot of information about the children of Zachariah who moved to California and who they married. However, there are still many things that I can't document from primary sources, mostly because I'm not sure where to search. I have also extended the project backward another 2 generations and am looking for documentation for those siblings as well. I'm trying to locate original documents (where possible) for birth, death, burial, marriage(s) for each child and their spouses. Since the earlier generations are during time periods where government agencies did not keep this type of information, I'm having to rely on church records, newspapers, funeral home records, family bibles, etc. as the best available sources of information.

I would be interested in meeting with you and discussion what you might have that can help me. I've found that what gets inherited down one line as documents or family folklore, is information that may not be passed down other lines. I will be in Menan the weekend of March 18th & 19th, perhaps we can meet at BYU Idaho?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi

Saw your post and was wondering how this project was going for you. Richard Ballantyne is my Great Great Great Grandpa. through him and his wife Huldah Meriah Clark daughter Meriah Cedenia Ballantyne. Is this line one that you would be interested in? I have a book called the Ancestors of Richard Ballantyne and Huldah Meriah Clark which I am now in the process of getting into my computer system and double checking information with the Family Search program as I go. Let me know if I can be of some help. Thanks
Michelle Nelson
Sugar City, Idaho

I'm looking for any info on my Grandfathers family. He was born in either India or Pakistan and eventually moved to Australia where he married Janet Nelson and went on to have six kids - Mark, Tony, Elaine, Theresa, Paul and Sally. He died in North Queensland Australia in 2004. He apparently have family (brothers) still in Australia, we think Western Australia.
He also apparently has a brother called Murdoch.

I would love to hear from anyone with any ties to these names and also any Ballantyne family members with an Indian heritage.

Re: Ballantine's of Chambers Hollow

I have an old hand written genealogy chart documenting the extensive family of John Ballantyne and Agnes Henderson. The Ballantyne names shown are written variously as Ballentine, Ballantine, Ballentyne and Ballantyne depending on the family tradition, so I will use my spelling of the Ballantyne name. This chart was prepared sometime in the early 20th century, and was added to by my aunt, Mary Ballantyne.

It shows that John and Agnes had five children; Thomas who married Elizabeth McAusland, John who married Margaret Ritchie, James (my great grandfather) who married Katherine Whyte, Christina who married James Chambers, and Robert (your ancestor) who married Christina Tweedie.

Robert and Christina had nine children; David who married Elizabeth Darling, Daniel who did not marry, Peter who did not marry, William who died at age 3, Mary who married George Griffin, Thomas who married Jennie Ganaung, Robert who married Katherine DeMond, James who married Lucy Clark, and finally John, your great-grandfather, who married Julia Burrhus and Mary Doig, your great-grandmother. The chart does not indicate who he married first.

The chart shows that John and Mary had one child; Walter Ballantyne, your grandfather, who married Florence Fitch and Betty Price, your grandmother. (Betty’s maiden name as shown on the chart is difficult to read so it may not be accurate.) The chart shows that Walter and Betty had only one child, Shirley Ballantyne, however it appears that this generation was incompletely documented.

As a matter of interest, my genealogical records show that my great-grandfather, James, was the first of the family to immigrate to America. He sailed to America from Peebles, Scotland in 1849 with thirteen members of the Tweedie family. They landed in the port of New York and then traveled to Walton by cart and oxen. They stayed at the John Bryden farm until they were able to purchase land to build their own homes. In 1854, James’ parents, John and Agnes, and their younger children came to America. James purchased 189 acres in a narrow valley known as Chambers Hollow. This farm was located between the Chambers farm and the Curry farm. Later, your ancestor, David Ballantyne, purchase farmland directly across the road from James.

My great-parents James and Katherine had six children, only two of whom married. After James died in 1907, Robert, Christina, and Jen worked the farm. As a young boy during the WW II years, I would spend my summers working on their farm. I have many happy memories of those summers. I knew your great uncle Lawrence and I spent some of my free time roaming the hills with his son, Alfred, who was my age.

I have a number of old photographs of the earlier generations that I can share with you. If this is of interest to you, you may contact me at <a href="http://www.jballantyne5@comcast.net" target="_blank">www.jballantyne5@comcast.net.
Hello Elaine, its Tony in Canberra.

I have the details of Howard William Ballantyne born 1921 in South Australia, and have met some of his descendants. His great grandparents were Andrew Ballantyne and Mary O'Doud (Dowd); Andrew's parents were Walter Ballantyne and Helen Scott, and you may recall from our previous email correspondence that we had trouble pinning down just what happened to Helen and Walter. I think we agreed that Walter probably married at least twice.

I am sending some of the relevant data to Ian by email today.

Am currently employed fulltime and have little time left for research, but by mid year I hope to be retired and want to get stuck into the Ballantyne mysteries again. We may yet be lucky and find something.

Hi Ian,

A brief contact before bed. It's a while since I did much on this side of my family tree, so when I checked my records, I remembered that I've 2 lots of Ballantynes which seem to be unconnected. I'm finding it hard to find the individual you mention - 7,000 plus names and so many spellings. Have you got any aprrox dobs , parents or other names? Even a place of birth would help me. I have Irish/Ayrshire Ballantynes and west Lothian Ballantynes. I've at least 2 Andrew Ballantynes, as well, so any help to pin down the right man would be a great help.

Elaine

Hi Ian,

This is a quick reply, unfortunately, but I'll get back to you more fully, later.

I'd be delighted to help with your research and can't think of any expenses that I'd want. My family tree is on Genes Reunited under Elaine* Ferguson. My grandmother was a Ballantyne and I've many Ballantynes on it - but the family gets lost in Ireland, so that's a bit frustrating.

If you can't access Genes, there are 2 options - either I send you a Gedcom - it's a rather complex version of my entire family tree (you can't isolate a branch to send, I'm afraid) or I can simply email anything I have on them - that may take several emails.

Best wishes,

Elaine

Please email me direct via that address.

I have a fair bit of material and can account for all the Ballantyne/Ballintyne branches in Australia. But it gets a bit murky once you get back to the scottish family. Missing records are par for the course.

Be very pleased to hear from you.
Hi Elaine
My name is Ian Beckett. I live in New South Wales, Australia. This morning I was asked to help a nephew trace his family tree. His grandfather was Howard William Ballintyne/Ballantyne. I have traced his family to your Andrew Ballantyne who married Mary O'Dowd.

I was hoping that you may be able to give me a start on their history please. I would appreciate any assistance that you may be able to give me. I will pay for any reasonable costs involved.

Thanks

Ian

Robert Ballantyne and Agnes Porteus

In tracing my mothers side of the family tree I came up with the following. It may be that I have made some wrong assumptions but it seems to fit. Robert Ballantyne b1677 married Jean Ilis or Ellis in 1697 at Traquaire, Peebles. Their son Thomas b1701 married Elizabeth Broun in 1724. Their son James b1727 married Isobel Grieve b1718 (Peebles) in 1748. N.B. The Grieve family can be traced back to John Grieve b1633 in Peebles and he married an Isobell Porteous(!) in 1651. in 1764 Robert Ballantyne was born to James and Isobell and in 1790 he married Agnes Porteous. Their son James b circa 1790 married Elizabeth Whitsun 1n 1815. They had a son James b 1823 who married Margaret Simpson in 1845 and I believe they emigrated to Ontario (Margaret's parents are shown as living in Ontario in the 1881 Canadian census) and had children one of whom was Ellen Ballantyne b 1845/9. I believe Ellen married John Cross an English railway worker living in Canada in 1865/6 and they then had a daughter Margaret A Cross b 1865/6 (my grandmother) there were several other children of James and Margaret who remained in Canada. John and Ellen then I believe moved initially to Malta where their son John Francis Cross (Francis was John's father's name) was born in 1871 eventually returning to England (Gateshead) where a second son James BALLANTYNE Cross was born followed by Esther, Mary, Helen and Emily. Margaret A Cross married John Curry in 1884. John Cross died in 1883 and Ellen remarried a widower Charles M Long. English census forms for 1881 and 1891 show Ellen as having been born in Canada. Hope all this helps. I would like to find confirmation of all the foregoing so if you can agree it I would appreciate that information. Kindest Regards, Alan Prue.
It's been a long time since you posted this query. I've just begun using the ancestry website.

My great-great grandfather was James Burn Ballantyne (1829-1877). He lived in Brackettville, Texas. His daughter Agnes was my great-grandmother. I have little more information than you. William Ballantyne was James' father and his mother was Margaret Clapham Burn.

Who were your great-grandparents and grandparents? Did you have any family in Brackettville?

Betty Awbrey
Hello Elaine

I tried to access the Ballantyne family tree via GenesReunited but couldn't seem to find it, but it is our first time on that site, any chance of letting me have access to it, i am on GenesReunited as sallyldorans.

I noticed on your tree on this site that you have Agnes Boyd, born c1835 New Luce, she was the sister of my 2nd Great Grandmother Jane Boyd, born c1849 New Luce, providing they are the same Agnes Boyd of course.

I'm hoping to find a connection of your Ballantynes to Hopkins, which are my line.

Hope to hear from you soon

Sally L Dorans

However, after a recent move, the copy of the booklet hasn't yet surfaced. I don't have any information on any of their ancestors.
