Daniel William Ballenger II

Hello Ballengers!

My grandpa's name was Daniel William Ballenger II; my father is Jerry Wayne Ballenger(1949)and my brother is Daniel William Ballenger III (1976). I think my grandpa originated (at least grew up) in Kentucky. However, my Ballenger relatives live in Portage, Indiana.

My grandpa was a very special man. I would like to know more about him. He passed away nearly 10 years ago. I just had a baby girl and I want to be able to tell her stories about him.

If anyone knows the Daniel William Ballenger II that I am referring to, or Jerry Wayne Ballenger, please get in touch.

Thank you very much for sharing my grandpa's life with me.

Re: Edward Ballenger Parents

I descend from Henry Machen and wife Francis Ballinger. Henry fought in the American Revolution and I have proven this.

Per the book "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America" compiled by Emma Barrett Reeves, pages 414 and 415; plus 472 to 476 states the Edward's father was Andrew born before 1692 in England. He came to VA in 1717 and was a member of the second Germana Colony. The book also states Andrew has not been proven to be the father of Edward.

The book only list Edward's wife as Mary --. Do you have proof that Mary's last name was "LEE"?

The book also states it might someday be proven the Edward was the son of Henry Ballinger and Mary Harding from Nailsworth, West New Jersey.

The book does state the proof of the children of Edward Ballinger and has George Washington renting 120 acres to Francis Ballinger and his two children for all of their natural lives. ref. page 415

I am trying to find information on Lionel Mac Duff who came to Waterbury Connecticut in the 1920's and married Alice Grenier who came from Quebec Canada in the 1920's Lionel listed his father as S Mac Duff of Longueil Quebec Canada. He and Alice had three children, Noella, Roger and Robert. They put the children in foster care by 1936 and went back to Canada. I don't know if they went their separate ways or stayed together. Lionel sent a picture to Noella on her eighteenth birthday saying that he was on his way to Nova Scotia.

Isaac Ballenger-Civil War.

I was working on something and ran across this info, I can't use it and thought it may help some one here.

HDQRS. CITY GUARD, PROVOST-MARSHAL'S OFFICE, Washington, D. C., February 5, 1862.

Brigadier General A. PORTER, Provost-Marshal.

GENERAL: In the case of Isaac Ballenger, a prisoner confined in the Old Capitol Building, I have the honor to report as follows: On the 27th of September last the following letter was received at this office:

CAMDEN, September 22, 1861, JAMES LESLIE, Esq.

DEAR SIR: A man by the name of Isaac Ballenger, a native of Burlington County, N. J., but for the last five or six years a citizen of Saint Joseph in Missouri, is now in this place. He left Saint Joseph, Mo., last Wednesday according to his own account and arrived here Saturday evening. He is now visiting his relatives in New Jersey. he is a violent secessionist, and I understand admits that he was arrested before he left Saint Joseph by the Union men. His mother, a very estimable woman lives in Virginia between Alexandria and mount Vernon. She is the wife of David Walton, a Union man, formerly of New Jersey. He has a brother, John Ballenger, who lives close to Walton, in Virginia, who is also a Union man. I understand he (Isaac) is about to visit Washington on his road to Virginia. He will no doubt apply for a pass to visit his relatives in Virginia and will most likely pass himself off as a Jersey man. If he gets over into Virginia he will carry information to the rebels and do us mischief. You had better watch out for him and put the authorities on their guard against him. His relations in Virginia are all from this State-loyal and very clever people.
Very respectfully, yours, &c.,
THOMAS H. DUDLEY.

On the 7th of November last the following letter was received at this office:

DIVISION HEADQUARTERS, Fort Lyon, November 6, 1861.

Brigadier-General MONTGOMERY, Alexandria.

GENERAL: By the direction of General Heintzelman I send you a man by the name of Isaac Ballenger who was arrested and brought to these headquarters. He has strong Southern proclivities, and came to Alexandria under a pass belonging to another party, not being able to obtain one for himself. He wishes to go to New Jersey. The general requests you to take charge of him to-night and forward him with a guard to the provost-marshal in Washington.

Respectfully,
ISAAC MOSES,
------------------------------
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com
The above Franklin Ballenger did die on the Sultana on his way home from the Civil War on April 27 1865; he was born c. 1845 in Indiana. There is adequate proof of this:

Franklin was "killed in an explosion of the steamer Sultana on the Mississippi River during the Civil War." The National Archives information, gathered by Diana Nellans, states: "Military service between 1864-1865, Private in Company H, 9th Regiment of the Indiana Cavalry. Captured at Sulphur Trestle, Alabama on September 25. 1864 and became a prisoner of war." Franklin was in prison at Camp Fisk. The wreck of the Sultana occurred about 2 A.M. on the 27th of April 1865. There was a boiler explosion just north of Memphis and about 1700 of the 2400 people on board perished. This boat was certified to carry 376 passengers. Most of the passengers on the Sultana were Union soldiers headed home. Many had survived Confederate prison camps then lost their lives on the over-crowded steamer.

From an official Civil War Record comes the following:
Name: Franklin Ballinger ,
Residence: Marion County, Indiana
Enlistment Date: 16 January 1864
Side Served: Union
State Served: Indiana
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 16 January 1864
Enlisted in Company H, 9th Cavalry Regiment Indiana on 16 January 1864.
Died Company H, 9th Cavalry Regiment Indiana on 27 April 1865 in Steamer Sultana

Source Citation: Side served: Union; State served: Indiana; Enlistment date: 16 January 1864..
Film #HM 540, roll 3.

"My" Franklin did not leave a will. His father and my 2nd great-grandmother are siblings.

Sincerely,
Margaret Currie
curjax@accesstoledo.com
Hi I was noticing your reply to Catherine and was curious. I can't see the post Catherine made but what shocked me is my name is Catherine and my grandfather was Karl Kenneth Ballenger. I do not remember posting the comment so I don't think it was me and I am wondering who she is and who you are in relation to Karl Ballenger. I am on my husbands account but you can reply to me at kittysue_7973@yahoo.com I am eager to learn more of my family as I was never around them. My father Robert Lee Ballenger moved away from me when I was an infant and I never got to know him. I just learned that there is possiblity he passed on last decemeber but I have not been able to confirm if this is him yet. Please send me any information you have. I look forward to hearing from you.

RE: Bradford Lanham

Hope this information will help. Not sure if this information is correct, but worth checking into.. Good luck.

Bradford Lanham married Nancy Ballenger in Boone County, Missouri on Jan 5, 1847. [MO Marriages to 1850]
Bradford and Nancy show on the 1850 Boone County, MO, District 8 Census enumerated in October 1850. They are show as Bradford, age 26, farmer, born in Missouri; Nancy age 24, born in NC; Thomas W., age 6, born in Missouri, and Martha F., age 5, born in MO.

It is possible that Bradford adopted these children as they are listed as "Lanham" not Ballenger.

Bradford then married a Jane Edwards on November 15, 1857 in Boone County, MO. [MO Marriages 1851-1900]

Did not find an 1860 census.

A Bradford Lanham shows on the 1870 Cedar Township, Boone County, MO census enumerated July 29, 1870 [line 22]. He is listed with the Bradford age 46, Mary age 20 and 5 other children from the ages of 5 to 18.

Doing a search on a Thomas Lanham I came up with two on the 1900 census, but nothing prior to 1900.

Thomas Lanham born about 1834, age 66, born in Missouri, is now living in Cedar, Boone County, MO as of 1900.

The second Thomas Lanham was born about 1844 in Missouri and on the 1900 census was living in Rockwall, Rockwall County, Texas, listed with wife Sara E., age 41 born in Georgia and son John T., age 9 born in Georgia.

Franklin Ballenger, d. in 1865

Franklin Ballenger, of the 9th Indiana Cavalry, is listed among the dead on the Sultana.

On April 27, 1865, the steamship Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River in what remains the greatest maritime disaster in American. Over 1600 passengers, mostly Union soldiers recently released from Confederate prison camps, were killed either in the explosion, from drowning, or fire.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a webpage called "Sultana Passenger List." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.riverrockentertainment.com/sultana_search.htm

I am working on a Family History of Anna Mcduffe who married Conrad Phillips. One of their daughters, Elizabeth married Myron Hawley Burd; Julian Burd is one of their sons. I would love to have copies of any newspaper articles and pictures which will add background and flavor to their part of the family history. Thanks so much for oblging me. You can email me directly at epmac27@comcast.net and possibly scan what you have and send. Looking forward to corresponding with you.
Betty MacDuff
Sunny Florida (The Villages, Central Florida)

I would appreciate your name and address as I am going to add this story to my book and I would like to give you credit for it. I wrote a note to Jack Haines; we'll see if he replies.
Could you tell me where you found the land grants online? I found some but all were in the names of Julian F., his brothers, Myron H. and Samuel C. (married to Indian) and his uncle Samuel Burd.
Thanks so much for the story. I don't find that Julian F. and Matilda had any children. On the 1900 Census it indicated that she had no children and they had been married for 18 years at that time. Any further help is appreciated.
Betty MacDuff
The Villages, FL
epmac27@comcast.net

Hi - I sent you a message via Ancestry's service but just in case it doesn't go through-- The furthest back on the Lankford side that is mentioned are the grandparents of Green Wright Lankford (Daniel Mason Lankford and Mirah Coble) - no dates given. Let me know if you'd like the page scans, I'd be happy to send them to you.

~Shelby~

Joseph Ballinger and Charity Wade - need proof

It seems to be accepted that Joseph Ballinger, son of Henry Ballinger and Mary Harding, married Charity Wade. I am looking for proof of Charity's maiden name. Does anyone know the original source for this information?
Does it come from the book, "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America"? If so, I would appreciate it if anyone who has access to a copy of this book could look and see if the author names his/her source for the surname, Wade. I have heard that this book has quite a few errors. I would rather locate a source that is closer to original, and draw my own conclusions. Can anyone help?
I am descended from Joseph's brother, Josiah, and will be glad to share what I have.
Sandy

I'll try this again. Here is my long reply:

My Dupuyer, MT neighbor had the newspaper photos and articles from an early Choteau, MT newspaper. His wife was a Montana State Senator. He liked researching information.

My home, however, is actually further North.

Jack Haines had found the photos and articles about Julian Burd, the founder of Dupuyer, MT. Julian Burd had arrived in the territory accompanied by his wife. At some point, his brother joined him. Did your Julian Burd have a brother?

At any rate, Julian Burd was very successful, making a town at a crossroad. I understand he paid cash for the unclaimed goods from the freighers (many horses horse-drawn freight wagons). This was legitimate business. People moved on and could not be found. The freighters had to haul everything back East. The freight companies were happy to have a purchaser.

The other stores around the territory sold liquor.

He opened a store, having useful general goods for sale people actually wanted. He had a mill. He built a bridge over Dupuyer Creek.

No other store did that.

He opened a little two-story "hotel". I understand there was a cardroom downstairs.

The articles in the Choteau, MT newspaper praised his enterprise. He was well liked, however the attention brought out thew worst in competing stores in the territory.

This is the "rest of the story" I found out.

Two men, brought as laborers for McKnight, so listed on the census, tried to put him out of business by hiring killers.

He put his children with his brother and his brothers Piegan Indian wife. His brother remained, but the "hotel" was burned to the ground. He and his wife moved to Choteau, MT, actually the nearby town. (note: towns around there in Montana are about 30 miles distant, because one horse and a wagon could travel 30 miles in a day.)

But not before he purchased "land grants" for each of the children, his own and the children of his brothers. I found the record of the "land grants" online.

McKnight claimed to own the "town" of Dupuyer, MT. However, the brother was occupying the land.

At any rate, the property in Dupuyer, MT was sold to present owners, population about 45, and the surrounding land is ownder by the surrounding ranches.

For this reason, too much inquiry is not too wise. However, I have tried to contact the descendants to let them know they have choice property "land grants" up and down The Rocky Mountain Front. Maybe that is not such a good idea.

As for the "land grants" his children are "white" and his brother's children are half. This also brings up things people do not want to remember. The remaining Burd family descendants claim indian ancestry, so you see the problem.

They have property, indian land.

In fact, most do not know their "roots".

I didn't know this is where the Ballenger name came into my family, my grandfather is James Ballenger Dodson. A grave marker in the "family plot" near McMinneville, OR has the Ballenger name for another Dodson. I do not know my relationship to him.

We re-use names in my family to help us know our "immediate" family relations. He is in the "family plot". He is an "immediate" family relation.

Julian Burd was a remarkable man, building up what he did and his wife was a remarkable "pioneer woman" to have endured. His brother and his wife are known in the local community, but some in the local community would rather not know "the rest of the story".

Conrad is a big name around there. Conrad, MT is the county seat of Ponderay County. Dupuyer, MT is in Ponderay County. The Conrad brothers, originally two laborers for "trader" McKnight became very rich.

Dupuyer is French for the indian word meaning "buffalo back fat" which is the name for the immediate region around Dupuyer, MT because ther land was so abundant there, so "buffalo back fat" represented an appropriate name for that immediate region.

I am not in Montana, right now. If I get back there, anytime soon or not, I will send what I have.

The neighbor is Jack Haines, Dupuyer, MT.

Maybe a letter sent to Jack Haines, General Delivery, Dupuyer, MT 59432 will get what you want, before I return to Montana but it would be wise not to mention direct descendants or "the rest of the story".

His daughter and her husband have purchased Julian's brother's house and immediate property, from the last owner!

You might just say you heard there are newspapers photographs and newspaper articles about Julian Burd and his success in Dupuyer, MT and he might be your distant relation or a cousin twice removed.

No matter, Julian Burd was a remarkable man!
Send me an alert when anyone replies to this thread.
Surnames:
Please enter only the surnames discussed in your post.
Classification: Query Bible Biography Birth Cemetery Census Death Deed Immigration Lookup Marriage Military Obituary Pension Will What is this?
Attachments: Attach a file
remove
Attach another file
Cancel

Re: Joseph, Sr. Jr.
conniedodson_1

Classification: queries
Surnames:
My Dupuyer, MT neighbor had the newspaper photos and articles from an early Choteau, MT newspaper.

His wife was a Montana State Senator. He liked researching information.

My property, however, is actually further North.

Can someone lookup the following for 1850?

Bradford Lanham, b.1824
Location in 1850 is in Boone County, Missouri
Wife will be Nancy, b. 1825

Nancy's first husband was James Ballenger.
Their only son, Thomas (b.1842) is missing from all 1850 records. I'm hoping he might be listed in proximity (he would only be 8 years old and likely still with mom!)

Thanks.

James Ballenger was born 29 May 1814 in Greenville, South Carolina, to Elijah T. Ballenger and Mary Wingo. Married Nancy Lewis Roddy on 28 February 1839. Moved to Boone County, Missouri sometime after 1840. I came up with all kinds of stuff; graveyards, different activities, businesses, and educational background. Again, thanks for your help!

Wright III

Shelby,
I did some poking around Google Books and discovered that on page 144 of "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America‎
by Emma Barrett Reeves" there is information about my great uncle Thomas Bright Lankford, my grandfather Green Wright Lankford and other family members as well. I am not sure how far back this book would trace the Lankford history, in that Google Books only gives a snippet view of what's searched for in some of there books. If the information goes back all that far by your estimation, just let me know and I'll save up for my own copy. Otherwise, any information that you can help me with would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, G. Wright Lankford III

All, I was scanning microfilm recently and found a death certificate (Virginia) for Fannie F. Butts Ballenger, born abt 152 in Loudound Co. VA, died June 13, 1931 in Alexandria. D/O Swarenton (?) Butts. Informant, Mr. John H. Ballenger. Being a Bollinger researcher I printed it out thinking it might be relevant to my own lines but I don't think it is. I've attached the image in case anyone finds it useful. Will also be posting this on the Butts forum.

Thomas Lester, Sytha's earlier and probably first husband died in 1787 in Pittsylavania.
If this is your line of Ballengers, I have additional information on this John Ballenger, but I have been unable to find any additional information on Sytha/Sitha Ballenger.
John writes his will in 1821 and leaves a third of his estate to Sytha and two-thirds to his step-daughter, Sytha Hines.
Re: Seeking contact with Ballengers from Walker Co., AL

Claborn C. Ballenger was also a witness on a southern claims commission petition for a Daniel Davis.
State: Alabama
County: Walker
Claimant: Daniel Davis
Claim #: 36790
Claim date: 23 March 1872
Page; 23 Roll # 32
In the petition his testimony states:

Claborn C. Ballenger who is substituted for Bryant Austin, who is sick, being first duly sworn deposes and says that my age is 38 years. Residence about three miles from claimant in Walker County Alabama and by occupation a farmer. I have been intimately acquainted with claimant ever since I was a small boy. For the year 1860 up to the fall of 1863 I resided in about four miles from claimant, was in his company frequently, and talked with him often about the war. He always expressed himself in favor of the Union cause and was opposed to seccession and the rebellion and in favor of the Union. Claimant was a very respectable citizen and a well to do farmer and a man of considerable influence in his neighborhood. and he always exerted that influence in favor of the union and against the confederacy. He always said that if there was any fighting to be done he was in favor of it's being done for the union and advised me to fight for the union. In the fall of 1863, I took claimants advice and went into the union army. I joined company "F" 145 Indiana Regiment. I do not know how claimant stood on the union question after I left him, only as it was reported to me by union men that he stood firm to the end; and after I returned home in the year 1865, I found him as I left him. Claimant so far as I know never did anything for the union cause further than to furnish supplies while union men here were lying out to avoid being conscripted. I have heard of threats being made against claimant to the effect that they would arrest him and take him off and take his property from him as a union man; and I heard that they had taken some of his property to wit: a horse and a yoke of oxen. I have heard of the threats of the taking of this property from different parties. Also claimant has told me that he had heard of their threats. I talked with union men before I left home who told me that claimant furnished them with rations and conducted them through private ways to keep them from being arrested by the rebels. After I had first gone off and returned, claimant concealed me in an old shop-house, some distance from his dwelling and brought rations to me. In conclusion I state that I never knew a truer union man than claimant. (John Burns) signed: Claborn C. Ballenger
