Who is Melvin Henry Ballinger?

I'm trying to find info on Melvin Henry BALLINGER, but am having no luck. Although I have tried every internet resource I can think of, I haven't come up with any definitive records for him. I'm hoping someone out there has Melvin in their family tree and can fill in the blanks.

Here is what little I do know:
Melvin Henry BALLINGER married Dorothy Marian HINRICHS on 17 Oct 1942 in Madison, Dane, Wisconsin.
At that time, Melvin was a Navy Seaman, 1st Class at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, NY. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles BALLINGER lived in Marsing, Owyhee, Idaho.
Melvin and Dorothy had a son, Melvin Lauren BALLINGER, on 3 May 1946, in Nampa, ID
During 1945, Melvin was stationed at the Plymouth Naval Base Hospital, Plymouth, England as Chief Electrician. His wife Dorothy was in the WAVES and stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, IL.
Melvin's wife, Dorothy was born 2 Sept 1911, in Wisconsin, to Walter and Marian HINRICHS. Dorothy died 15 May 2002, and is buried at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.
This is everything I know about Melvin Henry BALLINGER. Based on Dorothy's birth date and the date of their marriage, I would guess Melvin was born between 1900 and 1920(?). He is not the son of Elmer Ballinger.
If any of this rings a bell with any one, please let me know.
Thanks!
Kari

The Ballingers of England

Over the last 6 months I have been compiling a database of the English Ballinger Families that go from the early 1500'S to 1900. This is a compilation of the IGI and various census in England that are readily available on the net. I still have numerous individuals to enter, which I intend to do over the coming months. I also have a number of changes in format to add that should make it a more useful tool.

If anyone wants a copy in delimited form so you can create your own data base I would be happy to email it to you.

I am also hoping to hear from anyone who might have the Ballingers extracted from any Warrickshire census.

Many family trees show that James Ballinger, son of Josiah Ballinger and Mary Wright, was born July 28, 1735 in Hopewell, Frederick Co, VA. I have search the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, which is on ancestry.com, and which includes some records from Hopewell, but his birth is not there.
Has anyone found the Quaker birth record for James? Might it be in the book, "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America", and if it is, does the author show a source for that date? Any help would be appreciated.
Sandy

Ballinger's in KY, OH and Indiana

Hi all,
I am trying to do my husbands family tree and have been having little luck. I know that my husbands father was Kenneth Bruce Ballinger and his father was Lloyd Ballinger. After that, I am lost. I know that the family lived in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, but my husband knows very little of the family. I think that he said that there were some that lived in or around Ballinger Texas during the 1920/30's. If anyone can give me an idea of how to start his side, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Julie
When I was between the ages of 6-9 I live on a big farm in
in Apline CA...this was a foster home. We call her Grandma Ballinger as her husband has passed away but she had this big old house and farm..goats and chickens and she made her own butter and we all drank goats milk. We also had a big veggie garden. Now once or twice a year her daughter came with a Mexican lady and they cooked all kinds of things and she had a daughter or younger sister that lived close by but not in Apline who also had a farm and once a year they butchered a big Pig at grandma's farm. She had a son and daughter in-law come to live with us all and I don't recall the son's name or the daughter-in-laws name but they wasn't nice at all and I was very very scared of the son and had good reason to be and same with his wife.
My father died in Sept of 1954 and in Nov of 1954 I left and went to live with a aunt and uncle. Last time I saw grandma Ballinger was in the summer of 1955 my aunt and uncle took me to visit her.
I often wonder about her and have nice memmiors of her and she was a great lady and treated us kids all with love and kindness all the time and so did her daughter.
Does anyone have this lady in there Family History I would like to know how she came about becoming a Foster Mother back in those days. Oh there was a old Gold Mine oh her land too. and we had rabbits too.
I'm writing a history on my Family line and would like to tell about her.
Oh my sister and brother was in a foster home up behind grandma's place they was The Manly's and they took foster kids into.

Bobbie Campbell Hopper
mamahop45@frontiernet.net

Huguenot-Quaker & Bellange-Ballinger Connection?

"Pastor Wrangel's Trip To The Shore" appeared in a 1969 issue of "New Jersey History". Pastor Wrangel was a Swedish minister, who in 1764 made a trip from Philadelphia to Egg Harbor, primarily to minister to the Swedes there. He kept a day book of his trip, and the article contains a translation of that daybook. He mentions a number of individuals in the daybook. Pastor Wrangel’s entry for 14 October 1764 contains the following reference:

“We now went from here to the frequently mentioned George May's and found there ahead of us several of their neighbors, among them one by the name of Dalanger, whose parents were of the French Huguenots, who left their fatherland for the sake of the Protestant religion. He had now in turn left this faith which his fathers had valued so highly, and had joined the Quakers, a consequence of ignorance. I explained to him that such an apostasy could be justified only if founded upon complete conviction.”

Pastor Wrangel tended to misspell non-Swedish names, and I’m reasonably certain that his reference to “Dalanger” should probably be to one of Ive Bellange’s (d. 1720) sons. “Samuel Belange”, almost certainly a posthumous son of Ives Bellange, is listed as a freeholder on the 1773 Egg Harbor Township Tax list.

In South Jersey it has widely been claimed that Henry Ballenger of Burlington (d. 1733) and Ive Bellange of Little Egg Harbor (d. 1720) were probably brothers. Has that claim been disproven?

Jerry

In search of Henry 1660

Bruce read your reply.

I've still some doubts that the originals have been referenced.

When Henry arrived at Nailsworth from parts unknown a check would have been conducted on his bonafides by the Nailsworth meeting, (I think this is why they fled to Nailsworth in the first place to escape organised religious persecution that was rife at the time, the topography of Nailsworth provided a secure haven with lots of avenues of escape) So you can bet "London to a brick" that such a check would have been conducted to ensure he was not a spy or a person that would be acting against the interests of the meeting.

Since most other minutes of the time note where a new members of a meeting transfered from (lots of examples of this) I can not see why this would have been neglected in Henry's case.

I seem to remember that a law was enacted seizing all the original minutes of non conformist religions which were to be handed to the state (this means that even the quakers dont have the originals anymore though they did make digests and some copies and they didn't have photocopiers in those days) This means a hand written copy would appear to be original but would probably be a precis of the original material.

I guess finding the original would be a bit like finding the Holy Grail after all this time, but, it should have been filed at the PRO. If found it may add further legitimate avenues of investigation and may stop the speculation and publication of erroneous lineages that will be probably accepted as fact by the next generation.

Any thoughts ?

Russ

In search of Henry 1660

I still have doubts as to the validity of ancestors published in respect of this individual. I would have to agree with Bruce that there just is no evidence available at present. Certainly the alleged F GF & GGF with approx dates of birth is not sufficient.

I still feel that while each generation of genealogists build on the mistakes of previous researchers or rely on published works of others, which could be just as erroneous we will never be able to establish exactly where Henry was born and who his parents were.

Has anyone consulted the "Original" minutes of the Nailsworth meeting (not the digests that were hurriedly put together so the meeting would have access to its vital records when the originals were handed over to the state) These minutes will contain the information as to when Henry joined the meeting and where he transferred from. No doubt it will take a lot of patient study to extract this information as the information contained therein was added sequentially and not the brief references to an event the digests contain.. The information we seek will be in the original minutes that are apparently stored at the PRO. The digests are more commonly used by the LDS and others as they are more compatable with data bases.

If we can work out where he came from and Benningham is a nonsense (probably a transcription error) it should give us a place to continue investigation with a view to narrowing down his origins.

Children included:

Irene M., b. ca. 1909--Indiana
Harriet J., b. ca. 1911--Michigan
Dorris H., b. ca. 1912--Canada
Roy B., b. ca. 1914--Michigan

John B. Ballinger was remarried to an Anna Osberg, b. ca. 1884--Massachusetts in about 1916.

Trying to contact relatives anywhere.
I am the son of Aubrey Steele Ballinger born 1910 in the Midlands, maybe Birmingham. His father was Albert Caleb Ballinger who I believe lived for some time in Bromsgrove. He was the son of Frederick Benjamin Ballinger who I think lived somewhere in London England.

My father had 2 brothers Cuthbert and Ronald and 5 sisters Muriel,Edna,Mavis,Gwen and Effie.

Albert Caleb (his Father) had 3 brothers: Walter (who lived in Cornwall) and married Carrie?; Robert and William and 4 sisters:- Florence, May, Nellie(Ellen) and Louie.

I have quite a lot of information about the children of Albert and his wife Florence Maude nee Grocott but I am aware that many of my grandparents relations emigrated from England and my generation has lost touch.

I know my Auntie Muriel wrote to an Enid Craig in Pitsburg Pensilvania who was a relative of some sort.

I am more than happy to share what I have with anyone who wants to help.

obit: Barbara Elizabeth (Ballinger) Clay of Indianapolis (1916-2005)

Barbara Elizabeth Ballinger Clay 88, of Indianapolis, passed away September 17, 2005, at her home. Barbara was born in Indianapolis, IN on November 25, 1916 to the late Arthur and Caroline (Graves) Ballinger. She attended I.P.S. School 45, and graduated in 1933 from Shortridge High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and secretary of the senior class. In 1938 she graduated from Butler University. At Butler she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity and was the senior class secretary. It was at Butler University where she met the love of her life, Robert J. Clay. They were married on October 23, 1940. Mrs. Clay was a member of P.E.O., the Women's Society of Christian Service (where she held offices at the district level), and a life–long devoted member of Broadway United Methodist Church. Her career led her to secretarial positions at Shortridge High School, the law office of Cox, Conder, Bain and Cox, and to Broadway United Methodist Church, where she was secretary in the music and business departments. In 1987, she retired as the church's financial secretary, and she continued varied volunteer services until her death. Mrs. Clay was preceded in death by her sister, Marion B. LaRivers, and her husband Bob Clay. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Clay, Jr. (Jenny); daughter Barbara C. Taylor (Dr. Robert); and her two grandsons, Robert Clay Taylor and Kirk Ballinger Taylor. On Sunday, September 25, friends may visit the family at Broadway United Methodist Church, 609 East 29th St., from 2 to 4 p.m. in the parlor, with a celebratory memorial service at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary. Memorial contributions may be sent to the church for the Barbara B. Clay Memorial Fund, which will benefit the programming and missions of the church. Arrangements by Leppert Life Story Funeral Home, Nora Chapel.

The Disownment of Henry Ballinger, d. N.J. 1733

"Early Church Records of Gloucester County, NJ" by Charlotte Meldrum & John Pitts Launey (Family Line Publications (1995)) at p. 97 contains the following record from the Haddonfield (NJ) Monthly Meeting records:

“8/12/1724. Henry Ballanger has been seen in actions unseemly with a woman of ill fame – disowned.”

I have found that this Meldrum & Launey book sometimes contains errors. Nevertheless, “The William Wade Hinshaw Index to New Jersey Quaker Meeting Records – Haddonfield Monthly Meeting” (Selby Publishing & Printing (1990)) (which is based on research performed by Mr. Hinshaw that was unpublished at the time of his death in 1947) also indicates, at p. 17, that Henry Ballanger was disowned on 12/8/1724.

Since Henry Ballinger Jr. married and moved to the Salem MM in 1718, it is evident that it was Henry Ballinger, Sr., the progenitor of the family in America who was disowned in 1724.

Is anyone able to confirm the accuracy of the account given by Meldrum & Launey? Does anyone know any more about Henry’s disownment?

Jerry

I am trying to find anyone who may have known Julia Milton York, Russell Elwood York, Florence Milton, or Forrest Luke. Their children stayed with the Ballingers near Lima, Ohio in the 40's and 50's, and may be linked to an adoption in 1951. It is important that I talk to some members of this family. I am searching for a woman named Frances Ruth Reed who is my grandmother.
I'm looking for Lee's Parents. We think that Lee has three brothers named Aaron, William and Jackson. These 4 are presumed to be the 4 brothers living with their mother Alsy Ballinger on the 1830, Jefferson County, Tennessee Federal census.

We had a researcher who thought Lee's father to be a John Ballinger, son of James. However we can't prove it. So if these names sound familiar. Please write and I also have all of Lee and Julia children. If you can help me find and pove Lee's father please write to me at:
degraw@bmi.net

Sincerely with much thanks,
Donna De Graw

I'm looking for information on William and Mary. William was born in North Carolina in 1848 and died 1909. Mary was born in Illinois in 1850 and died 1939. They married August 25 1870 in Coles County, IL. I have 11 children for them: Matilda, James, Charles, Sarah, Sherman, John, Rose, Della, Essie, Bessie & William Riley.

I found William in the 1900 Census living in Richwood township, Jersey County, Illinois with wife Mary and children John, Rose, Della, Essie, Bessie, Riley. William born in North Carolina. Father born in North Carolina and mother in Pennsylvania. For Mary the 1900 census said father born in Tennessee and mother in Kentucky. Census says that in 1900 she had had 12 children 9 of which were still alive.

Ballinger/Ballenger in Oklahoma

Hi All~
I'm searching for ANY leads on my GGrandpa- Asa Martin BALLENGER b.7/4/1861 d.7/15/1921 in Oklahoma. No one in my family is sure about the spelling BALLENGER or BALLINGER, but here is all I know about him; He married Myrtle Bell PERRY b. 2/27/1882 d. 8/25/1947 Toledo,OR (I believe they married in OK) sometime before my Grandma, Thressia Martha Ballenger, was born 8/31/1908 in Lugart,Kiowa Co,AR. I also know they had at least one other child; Luther Ballenger. All that is remembered about Asa is that he worked for the railroad and was a gambler. It's believed that he died in OK and it's written in my Grandma's bible that he is buried in "Rock Cementary". Any leads would be greatly appreciated as to his family or where "Rock Cementary" in OK might be.

Thank you for reading:)
~Staci

John Ballinger, b.ca. 1748 Monocacy, moved to Guilford Co., North Carolina

This John Ballinger is the son of Henry Ballinger/Hannah Wright. Apparently Reeves in Three Centuries of Ballingers in America reports that he married a Nancy Eastham and moved to Garrard Co., Kentucky. Does anyone have proof of this? I believe that he married Katherine Stewart/Stuart (Stuart family documentation seems to confirm this) and was the father of a Henry, John, Hannah (m. Joseph Coffin) and Rebecca (m. Joseph Aydelott) (there may be more children). There is a John Ballinger in the 1790 census in Guilford Co., NC with 2 males 16+, 4 males under 16 and 6 females. 1800 and 1810 censuses show a John Ballinger age 45+ in Guilford Co. It is known that his father Henry went to North Carolina in 1751 and settled in the Guilford Co. area.

Any help with this would be appreciated.
Dorian Greenbaum

Ballinger (Balinger) or Ballenger

My husbands Grandfather was Theodore Daniel Ballinger. We cannot locate his father William Dempster Ballinger. Only mention I can find was in 1880 Bradley Co., TN census where it shows his mother as C.L Ballinger and a sister C.J. Broyles. At that time he was listed as 22. He married Lora Manning from Bradley County. Later it was told that he went to Kentucky. No records other that the census can be found.Any help would be appreciated.

Ballingers from Missouri

y father is Gene Curtis Ballinger, the only child of John Curtis Ballinger and Kathryn Jane (Moore) Ballinger. My Grandfather, John Curtis Ballinger, passed away in 1997 at the age of 87. His sister, my Great Aunt Ora, passed away many years ago. There are two living siblings. Nelle Ballinger, never married, who just celebrated her 101st birthday and a brother William Irl Ballinger.
John Curtis Ballinger married and started his family in Appleton County, Missouri. Sometime around 1913 he moved his family to New Mexico where he settled a homestead. My Great Aunt Ora showed me a book back in 1986 that listed hundreds of Ballingers and Bollingers. I have no idea where that book is now. Most of my cousins live in Michigan, where we were all raised. I've recently met people from Oklahoma that believe we may be related.
