Seeking information on Casper Baltzer (b abt 1727 in Holland(?)) and son Peter Balsley (b 1757 Holland). Casper emigrated to US with son and settled in Malius, Onondaga, NY. Year of immigration 1752. I found a great source in the Genealogy of the Baltzy-Balsley-Polsley family book but am looking for additional information.
Peter had a son Nicholas (1793 - 1871) who settled in Sandy Creek, Oswego, NY.

I have information to share if anyone is interested. Also, I highly recommend the above mentioned book. It was printed in 1939 and has several detailed sections about the Balsley family and their descendents. Thanks!

Kay,
So would we!!! I have been working on this for 25+ years, most recently with Barb Goss. We base our research on a biographical sketch by one of Sam's grandsons, James Robinson BALSLEY, however it seems NO RECORDS survive linking, Wm H., John, George and Hiriam to ANY PARENT. This biographical sketch is as much solid proof as Katherine Posley Bryan's book. "Nothing can be told of the paternal ancestry of the Balsley family except that tradition says the emigrant ancestor came from Bavaria, in Europe. The name has been anglicized and so changed that the identity of the original bearer cannot be discovered. This record begins with SAMUEL BALSLEY, who came to Fayette county and had four sons who are believed to have been born in this country. There is no record of his wife." As our local BALSLEY expert, the late Lyda BALSLEY Dull used to say to me, "J.R. would surely know his grandfather's name!"

Another researcher, has sent me circumstantial info, to make the case in favor of Christian, Jr., as William was executor of his will. (Very impressive, I might add!) Still another researcher says, "he sees no evidence of any Samuel Balsley running around that area in the early 1800's".

My best GUESS is our ancestor was Christian Samuel BALSLEY, who commonly went by SAMUEL to distinguish himself from several other Christian BALSLEYs, who lived in the area, at the same time. BTW, Barb is not "buying into" this theory!

IMHO, the trail stops at (our ancestor) William H.and his brothers!!! IF anyone can produce any SOLID evidence, I would not only consider it but welcome it!

Regards,
Cynthia Hawkins Wood

http://www.pacivilwar.com/bios/balsley_family.php

I would love to know where this Christopher comes from.

Up to now I believe that researchers chose him because they can find him, and reject Samuel simply because they can't find him.

Me?
Hi Gang. This is the David G. Balsley from the Philadelphia Pa. area and am about to be 54 years old.
son of Bernard. Now I was told that our history starts in either Sweden or Norway where our name was Baltski or something like that, migrated to england where name changed to Balsley, boarded ship 1640 something and arrived in Canada. Migrated west over time and finaly entered the continental US through the oregon trail in the eary 1800's where we settled in North and South Dakota, Wyoming etc. laters split in late 1800's and some went west to California and others went east. so, here we are. There seem to be alot of us with similar first names, David, Bernard, Luke, Jesse, for example. could be conincidence.

My Great Grandmother was Jane Balsley, Clyde's sister. She was born in Paterson, NJ in 1905, two years before they moved to Texas. It seems that no one has any information on her, but I can fill in that gap. She passed away in 1984 when I was 11 years old. She was married to Richard Joseph Donnelly and they lived in Piscataway, NJ. Their daughter Dorothy was my grandmother.

WA State Balsley's

My family is now in Washington. My great-grandfather's name was Frank Reeves Balsley (wife Ida), and my grandfather's name was Donald Reeves Balsley (born around 1920). I know that he had some brothers and a sister. Kenneth, Virgil, Jesse, and sister Dorothy. I believe he moved to Washington from one of the Dakota's. I believe all siblings are still in the mid-U.S. somewhere. There are other Balsley's in our state, and we believe that we are related but do not know how. I also met a Balsley in Cincinnati Ohio, who is probably a relative but we didn't know how. Researching, I am unable to find a link to one of the three brothers who came to this country, but it really seems that we must all be related in some way.

BALSLEY Josiah R., Enos and Clyde et al.......

I've been trying to tie up some loose ends and found info that I never knew! And, as always one thing leads to another.....

"Time magazine Monday, Aug. 03, 1942

Died. Captain H. Clyde Balsley, 48, early member of the Lafayette Escadrille and first U.S. flyer to be shot down in World War I; of complications from wounds received in 1916; in Los Angeles." (died 23 July, 1942)

This is a family of heros! Clyde's grandfather, Josiah R. Balsley, 1836-62 was killed during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Robert F.Balsley 1945-68, who I believe was Clyde's grandson, was killed in Viet Nam.

Does anyone have any additional info on the 20th century family? I'm descended from Josiah's brother David, my g-g-grandfather. I have all the early family history, except of course William H.'S father's name...(we still think it was Samuel!) Thanks!

BALSLEY 1752

While searching immigration records today, I was going over passenger lists for:
Sept. 27, 1752 . Ship Anderson, Hugh Campbell , Captain, from Rotterdam , last from Portsmouth
I found the BELTZ, MARQUART(possibly MANHART) and of course, Peter BALTZLY, whom I knew was also on that ship..beside him was another name, and the more I looked at it, the more I wondered if this was again another misunderstood, misspelled version of BALTZLY..
I'll post it here, as I copied it, and let other researchers see what they think....
"Christoff (KB) Pantzly Petter Baltzly "
could Christoff PANTZLY be Christian BALTZLY, son of Peter???
and...........
what does"(KB)" stand for??
other than my initials.....
