I've been cleaning out my genealogy files this past week and think I saw a picture of George (father in law of my grandpa, Joe Reuter). I'll look and let you know.

Separately I'll get my current email address to you so we can get caught up on Reuter issues. (The sword by the way has a new home.)
Renert Baltes and Catherine Neu are also in my family tree & I am descended from Charles, as well. My Dad (orginally from Versailles & Frenchtown, OH area) has a a great deal of ancestry information, though I don't know how much farther back than these people - I think maybe back into the 1600's, though. I can check with him if you are still looking for information.

Sorry, I can give not the exact origin of the last name "Ripp". However, he is listed approximately 250 times in the German phone book! But the last name Ripp exists also in the Alsace (France)! It is possible that the name Ripp an abbreviation of the German family names Rippe; Rippen; Rippel; Rippert; Rippolt or also Rippgen is. I have not found "Rupgen" and also "de Ripp" in the Dutch phone book.

Thank you for the information. I would never have figured the association to Balthasar.

Would you know the last name of the abbreviated form of German 'RIPP'? Ripp, like Pings where located in Ahrweiler area 1980's. (pre-1980's Prussia and France area.) I have heard from family members it could be dutch Rupken or de Ripp, or Swiss - von Ripp. Noone has confirmation.

The last names "Baltes" or Baldes, Baltus, Baldus etc are German. It is the abbreviated form of "Balthasar". Balthasar; Melchior and Kaspar were the "Three kings". The reliquary is in the cathedrale of Cologne.

At no time in the history of the world has there been a place called "Federation of Rheinnland, Prussia." The area west of the Rhine River has always been known colloquially as the Rhineland (Rheinland in German). Until Napoleon conquered the area in the 1790s, it was comprised of numerous small, independent states. After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the settlement worked out at the Congress of Vienna gave the Rhineland to Prussia.

A cursory reading of some history at Wikipedia would provide good background.

Let me clarify that last email. Would you consider the Baltes family crest (coat of arm) surname has French or German? I am trying to figure out how to determine the surname origin, family crest and etc.. if in the 1700's the family lived in the Federation of Rheinland Prussia. Exception, is the family surname moved in the 1600's from one Federation to another. Such as, Federation of France to Federation of Rheinland Prussia. Federation of Swiss to Federation of Rheinland Prussia or Federation of Baviaria to Fed Rheinland Prussia. Then the origin is based on previous Federation.

Name did not change-just a spelling error at NY.

Anton is Anthony

During the 1840's there really was not a Germany as we know it today. It was divided into different regions/kingdoms etc of which Prussia was one of them. More specific it was known as the Rhineland.

I think if you look at the census again-the children were born in Wisconsin (as he was married in 1860) and that you saw the section where they are telling where their father and mother were born.

HI susan:

I just started working on this a few weeks ago, although the family has been toying around with it for years. I have pictures of Cornelius Pings and at least three of his children. I remember that my Grandma Baltes (Mary C. Pings) spoke a dialect of German that she called "schwietz" or Swiss. I think that the Pings farm was next to or very close to the Baltes farm in Roxbury. I would be glad to have any additil infkrmation you might have and will happily share anything I have that you might be injterested in.

Dave Baltes

Hello, I am Susan Stier daughter of Esther Ripp, granddaughter of Christian Ripp Sr, great-grand of Christian Ripp and Marie Ann Pings, great-great grand of Johann Peter and Anna Bertram of Mayschoss/Dernau Prussia (now Germany). Mary C. Pings daughter of Cornelius Pings. Cornelius and my Marie Ann Pings were brother and sister. I have information on the Pings, Johann and family to America and history in Prussia. You can email me at stier.js@gmail.com. Also, June of 2009 I met Gottsacker and Bertram distant relatives in Germany.

Baltes Family in Roxbury, Wisconsin

My grandfather was Bartholomew G. Baltes. He was the son of Anton Baltes, a farmer in Roxbury, Wisconsin who came to the US around 1848 when he would have been about 11 years old. I am trying to find out who Anton's parents were and where they came from in Germany. Census records show that Anton indicated he was originaly from Prussia, but that could have meant almost anywhere in Germany in 1840. My grandfather was married to Mary C. Pings who was the daughter of Cornelius Pings. The Pings family also was from Roxbury, Wisconsin. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at a dead end right now.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi - I just talked with my Dad - David Baltes. His dad, Norbert Baltes sent my dad down to Chicago to visit a Tony Baltes who used to haul coal up to second story apartments, etc. He thinks that was around 1935-1940 as he recalls. My dad still wears a cameo ring that his dad got from Tony as collateral for a $20 loan, but was never repaid. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I really appreciate it! The Chicago telephone directory from 1962 lists 4 people with the last name of Baltes; Anton, Michael, Walter and someone with initials only. I found out that Anton is deceased, but I tracked down his wife. She was very nice, but wasn't related. She didn't know who the other 3 names were, either. I haven't tracked down the others.

I visited the town of Uedelhoven a few years ago and purchased a book listing the Baltes family that lived there before emigrating to the United States. I have subsequently started a family tree. I have listed here the generations of Baltes's from Michael to myself.

Michael Baltes 1685-1757
Peter Baltes 1716-1793
Michael Baltes 1758-1801
Hubert Baltes 1802-1837
Peter Joseph Baltes 1830-1895
John J.
I have been working to trace my Dad's side of the family tree back to Europe and have hit a brick wall. If anyone knows more about Jean Reyne/Renert Baltes, born around 1742, died April 5, 1785, lived in Belgium and was married to Catherine Neu/Ney, born around 1742, died October 25, 1791, I would appreciate any help I can get!

They had four children, as far as I can tell - Nicolas, Dominique, George and Charles. It is Charles and his family that I am descended from. His line eventually settled in the Frenchtown, Ohio area.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

Jessica =)

Hi Jennifer,
I heard from you in 2002. I haven't been searching for several years, but am ready to try again. I was born Barbara Baltes, to supposedly mother of the same name, on 11/25/62 in Chicago. I was adopted and my name was changed to Stacy Flower. I'm just looking for any members of my birth family. Have you come across anything in your research that might help? Thanks!

Stacy

Wonderful!
My Baltes connection arrived in Wisconsin on or about 1846. George & Maria Magdalena Baltes purchased land in Roxbury WI in 1846. They had eight children: Antoni, Elizabeth, Peter, Jacob, Gertrude (my gr-gr-grandmother), Emma, Mathias, and Maria Anna. I do have dates and places of death for this generation, if it helps.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kris
klschaefer@gmail.com

California Baltes relatives

I am told that in the later 70's or 80's, maybe even 90's that a Baltes relative from California contacted (Wisconsin) relatives and collected family tree information. It would be a time-saver for me and others if I could get in touch with them. If you have any info, please contact me.
Many thanks,
Kris

Baltes groups

There seems to be several groups of Baltes' that came over from Germanic areas of the World to the US. Some settled in the Midwest (Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota), some in Northern NY and some in NYC with scattered groups elsewhere. Are these groups related? Do they come from different areas of Germanic Europe. Can anyone help me with this?

My Baltes family settled in NYC by the way, so I am more familiar with this group.
