I'm Jed Banda from the Philippines,a part of South East Asia. According to my Great Grandfather our clan BANDA, where originally from Indonesia and had migrated here in the Philippines during the 18th Century,The time where Philippines was under the Spanish Colony, and where Borneo legends say was part of the Philippines but was sold by a DATU (King of one of the tribes) to the neboring country which was Indonesia. Thus forcing the clan to travel northward of the Philippines.

Regarding Costanzo and Pietro Boley:

Both originally went to work in tanneries in Ontario, Pietro stayed in Huntsville Ontario while his brother Costanzo settled in Mellen.

Costanzo's wife and daughter Adele joined him in Ontario, arriving September 19, 1903 on the Philadelphia. The ships list says she was headed for Gravenhurst, which means that she was probably joining him in Bracebridge. (Often the ticket was to Gravenhurst, a few miles from Bracebridge).

The link between Ontario and Mellen is tannery work.

Fayette Shaw had built the tannery in Mellen, while one of his cousins owned tanneries in Bracebridge and Huntsville Ontario. There are a few instances of men who went to Ontario settling in Mellen and vice-versa.

The Mellen tannery appeares to have employed men from Meana di Susa as early as 1900, and when the Huntsville and Bracebridge tanneries needed workers they went looking in the same place.

There is a half page biography of Costanzo Boley in volume 2 of A Journey Into Mellon, and there is some info on Pietro Boley in Huntsville with Spirit and Resolve.

Emile Franco
Ottawa Canada
I have spent most of the hunt on the Boley side and not the Banda side. One of the reasons that I have not been in contact with John Boley in Mellen was that when I started tracing the Boley name I ran into several Costanzo Boley's and also several Costanzo Bolleys. It got a bit frustrating and I became unsure about some of my data.
Did you find Margherita Barbara Banda in the Ellis Island records - she was very difficult to find. The name they had her and Adele listed under was Bilej. I searched the years between the births of Elana in 1902 - born Italy and John Peter born 1905 in WI. I knew that she had to have come across between those years.
You can contact me directly at rellingsen47@msn.com

Rich

Rich,

Very interested in the family history. My mother is Margaret Ferando Roherty. Her father dropped one of the r's. ( to make the search more difficult in 2004! )

On the Ellis Island site I found Costanzo and Pietro Boley coming over on the same ship: I also found my Grandpa Mark Ferrando coming over with his parents in 1908 at age 11.

As I mentioned previously, my grandmother Adele Boley Ferrando was born in Italy to a Margaret Banda. I wonder if her family is the connection to Grosso, Boley and Ferrando.

Thanks for your response,
Richard Roherty
Tucson, AZ

Boley, Costanzo
Italy Italian North
Meana
April 28, 1903
26y
Ship: Noordam
Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France
------------------------------------------------------------------
Boley, Pietro
Italy Italian North
Meana
April 28, 1903
28y
Ship: Noordam
Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France

It has been a couple of years since I did any e-mailings with him. He was very helpful with information about your family. My Grandfather, Giovanni Battista Grosso came to the US in 1905. We thought he came straight over to Washington state, but his Ellis Island Passenger list said that he went to Mellen, to visit his cousin Costanzo Boley. I looked up Mellen in the phone book and started calling all the Boley's until I found John. We have exchanged a lot of e-mail and I then set off to find the connection between our grandfathers... Unfortunately I have not yet found that connection. Are you interestested in Your Family history?

Rich

Re: Banda Family from Italy

Louis (aka Luigi) and Maria Banda (maiden name "Boley") are my great grandparents. They arrived at Ellis Island June 5th, 1909, from Meana de Suza, Italy, on the ship "La Provence". They lived in Mellen, Wisconson until the early 1920's when they moved to San Francisco after a fire burned down their house in Mellen. Their oldest child, Adele, died as an infant shortly after their arrival to Mellen. Katherine is my grandmother and is still living in San Francisco at age 92. She married Bruno Lucchesi in 1935, but has been widowed since 1994. Louis and Maria's other children include: Emily, Ellen, John, Emiel, Rosemary, and George and Margaret. Emiel (married) is 85 and lives in Petaluma, CA, and Rosemary (single), 79, lives in San Francisco. Emily died at age 26 in 1942. I believe Margaret died as a young child. John, Ellen and George lived long lives, married with large families, but are now deceased.
Louis Banda's parents were Giovanni Banda and Catterina Pelisera. Louis's siblings included Eugenio, Rosina, Lucia and Marietta.
Maria Banda's (Boley) parents were Battista Boley and Elena Odiardi. Her siblings included Aldrado, Ermelinda, Onorina, Anna and Eugenio. Maria's sister Anna married Eufrasio Pelissero and they had a daughter Helen who lives in Toronto, Canada. Helen contacted me a few months ago for family info as she is going to Italy this spring. Maria Banda (Boley's) maternal grandparents were Giuseppe Odiardi and Maddalina Franco.
I do not know much of the pre-America stories from the Banda family, but I am very interested to learn more. How are you related? Email me any time at glucchesi@mac.com

Yes, as a matter of fact I do know of some Bandas' from Italy or rather people with a similar surname who settled in Chile, Brazil, and Argetina.

In fact, get this, my Great Grandmother had a brother who settled somewhere in Argentina or even Chile. Her Father also had 2 brothers, who I believe also had families.

Don't ask me about Mexico though, I'm not sure how the Banda Surname ended up there but I do know that Italians did emigrate to the country of Mexico in the early 1900s.

Conduct a DNA test if you can. I again say, more evidence points to the "Banda" surname being Italian, or at least my evidence.

An explaination for why Mexicans share the last name of my Great-Grandmother.

Sorry, this will be my last post but my interest is peaked by the fact that, "Banda" is prevalent in Mexicans.

I was going through the records here on Ancestry.com and it shows more Bandas' live in the Southwestern United States.

I do know that the name Banda is Italian or a name stemming from the Romance languages but I don't understand why the name is numerous in Mexico and the Southern U.S.

There were Italian-Mexicans, a substanial amount. Have any of you who are Mexican-American and have an Italian name tried contacting the Italian-Mexican Heritage foundation in Mexico?

Here is an interesting read on Italian Mexicans:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian-Mexicans (Sources included).

There are about 50,000+ Italian-Mexicans and it is quite possible that the Banda name traveled through Mexico from Italy. Then again you could just be an Indian who adopted the name by coicidence or your ancestors played in a Band. I urge you to conduct a DNA test and see what ethnic background you are, if it comes out you have European roots, well then, your ancestors are probably Italian Mexican immigrants.

Thanks again, and keep me posted on what you Banda Mexicans find about the name Banda, here is my e-mail address, darkest_hour_2005@yahoo.com

Re: Banda may be Italian or rather is Italian

I've spoken to the Genealogist I've hired.

My Great-Grandmothers family is Italian, from Northern Italy. He told me that it is in-fact an Italian name stemming for the Visigoths who settled in various regions.

You can probably assume that it is also spanish and french, it most certainly is not African or Asian. The Banda Islands are actually the Kepulauan Bamda islands, and the M is silent when pronounciating the term. In these said Islands the "Banda" term is used differently and pronounced differently, it is also not a surname in the province.

The name was also used by a dictator in Africa, Hastings Banda in a remote part of Africa, who's name is probably anglicanized as it is quite normal for many educated Africans to change their names.

There is also the Banda people in Africa. They all have the name Banda but it's an African tribe having had little contact with Europeans. It's very remotely and Coincidental that they share our name, and again it could be the same issue with the Indian version, as in it is pronounced more differently than it is spelled.

I've conducted a lengthy and pricey DNA test and the results show no trace of African or Semitic roots, but rather shows I'm 100% of European lineage. Now it is perhaps a very small chance you could be from Indonesia or Africa and have that last name but It's rare, very rare that any person in the Contiental United States kept the name, "Banda" when they were brought over on slave ships from Asia and Africa.

My Genealogist assures me that it is indeed a European Name found more commonly in countries with Romance Languages (Italian, Spainish, & French). Those of you wondering it's origin, it's Southern European.

I would advise a DNA test. They have different prices for various tests, I underwent a lengthy one that cost around $800. There are less expensive ones that will merely establish your race or ethinic background.

In conclusion, if you live in the States and your last name is Banda (Banta, Bandi, or Bande), you are more than likely of Southern European origin. (French, Spanish, or Italian)

Thank you and I am more than satisfied with the results, I hope you find my information helpful and my email address is Darkest_Hour_2005@yahoo.com, feel free to e-mail me if you wish to know more about the origin of "Banda".

Her father Salvadore was a Police Officer in Northern Italy, in Trento Northern Italy. Her mother was a home-maker and the daughter of a Career-Soldier, Antonio Lugi Ferritti.

I've also noticed Italian surnames are also very unique and rare, which could explain Banda rareness. As I said, I do have a professional working with me and he is pretty pricey so I would appreciate any help in tracing this rare name. He keeps telling me it's a Northern-Germanic Name that spread during the early centuries of the Holy Roman Empire into Italy that became bastardized by the latin language. Originally Band, then turned into Bandi or Banda.

They do end with an "AH, or Long A vowel sound."

Banda may be Italian or rather is Italian

I recently found out my Great Great Grand-Mother, Angela Di Banda was from Northern Italy. She married my Great Grandfather Peter Schubert. (Austrian-Hungarian Empire at the time, in Modern day Czech Republic).

Her father was Salvadore di Banda and her mother Angela Ferritti (Sp?) Banda.

She was not African (As I originally though the name was of Asian/African descent) from pictures, she was in fact a burnette with light hair. I also understand that there was a substanial amount of Italian-Mexicans (Which could explain some of you people in Texas having the name).

Some of you are wondering if it's African, it's not. My sources and info tell me a lot of the names in Africa are anglicanized. What strikes me as odd is that this name is rare, really rare, all around the world as well. It seems more prevalent in Mexico, which perhaps it is a mestizo adopted surname or rather a latin-american surname that has been adopted by Indegenious people of Mexico for-whatever reason.

Well this is all I can offer for now, I think or rather from what I know it very well could be Italian or a rare Italian name, perhaps it was a taboo surname or perhaps it was a noble surname. I still want to research the name further and have a hired some professional help.

It is Italian/Spanish name.

It's a no way related to the Banda Islands which real name is "Bamda"

The King Bahdu or African King Banda is a mere Anglicanization of the name. The Banda people is also an anglicanization, their real name is bahmeda. It's very difficult to trace a surname with little or no roots.

The name appears to be rare, perhaps because the people who immigrated to Mexico/Cuba were sporadic. It is possible that it is an occuptional surname as well, which would explain incosistencies in relations.

You must understand that people change their names, quite frequently, for example, a Smith family of Germany may not be related to Smith from England, that's probably because someone changed their name.

I have a great grandmother who's name was Angela di Banda (Northern Italy only child of Salvadore Banda and Angela Ferritti Banda), she was Italian and she married my great grandfather a German immigrant. Remember this when searching for a surname, it doesn't always relate to other names, in fact your name could have been Bindy, Banhu, Banta, Bantu, and so forth.

http://usuarios.lycos.es/Virgosoft/Manual.htm

Banda is a noble name (Well not really a name) from the Basques/Cantabria regions of Spain.

My Maternal Grandfather's family are original Spanish Tejanos (Texans) who immigrated during the 1800s along with others from the Basques and Cantabria.

The name is not really a surname. The reason it's so rare is because it's the name of an order of Spanish Citizen-Soldiers in Cantabria and Basques. Many People of peasent descent later adopted this as a surname, similar to names pertaining to jobs. John Butcher (Not a surname but infact a person whom probably was a butcher).

I just want to clear this up. While perhaps Banda is Italian for some people, the name is from Spain, derived from an Order of Spanish Citizen Soldiers.Remember it's not uncommon for people to take names from battles or sacred orders.

If you're from Mexico, then it's a good chance you are descended from a Person (Of Spanish Descent) who adopted the name Banda which explains why we aren't related. Mexico was a place where people of Basques descent flocked to throughout the 1800s, also it is of Cantabrian descent.

In conclusion, unlike the Sanchez, Fernandez, Hernandez, and others that end with an ez, Banda ends with an "a" which obviously makes it distinct from the common surnames. This is usually a good indiction your name is probably from Northern Spain, as Northern Spain has distinct languages and distinct surnames.

Thank you and I hope this helped some of you who come looking.

Banda's in california

As someone wrote before, the Banda's must not have been very close! There seems to be Banda's everywhere but we don't seem to be related. I think we must be related because the name Banda is not as common as you might think,it is not like Garcia or Rodriguez. It must have originated somewhere.

I also don't know much about my fathers family history, because my father doesn't talk about it, I don't know why.

My father is Carlos Banda-Sepulveda, he had several brothers and sisters, I can't name them all. My grandfathers name was Concepcion Banda, and they are from michoacan Mexico.

I think I need to play more detective work and get some more names for you all. Any relatives out there?

Patricia

Do you have an approximate birth year for your Maddalina Franco, or an approximate year for her marriage to Mr. Odiard? There are a couple of instances of a Maddalina Franco marrying an Odiard in Meana, and I may be able to take her line back a generation for you depending on who she is.
