Wilhelm Hermann Teutsch was born 7 Nov 1845 in Berlin according to a handwritten family tree. His daughter Clara (b. 1873) and son Paul (b. 1870) can be found on Familysearch.org as Christened in Luisenstad. Does anyone have further information on William Teutsch or his wife, W. A. Emma Liehr.

I have been trying to to determine what the original German name of my Banks ancestors was. Recently I decided to check the census records for the siblings of my ancestor. His brother reported to the census that his last name was Banke. His father reported that his birthplace was Mechlenberg, a northern German state bordering Prussia and Denmark. So your comments make sense to me. They originally settled in Wisconsin and then moved to Michigan. Thankyou for your posting.
John Knowltom

I have been looking for information on Bancke. Our grand father Joseph George Bancke married a Bertha Still June 30 1896 in Portland Oregon. They divorced and both eventually
remarried. Bertha married in Washington State.
Joseph G, my husband's grandfather married Vida Stine.
We are looking for information on His father Joseph F. Bancke from Holstein Germany who married Catharine. We cannot find any mention of Catharine's death in Portland. We did find them on the Indianna census 1870. But cannot find any other mention of her, But know that she died soon after son Joseph G. was born.
Not sure if this is your Bertha but hope this helps.

Hi
Another thought, Our Joseph Bancke came to Oregon about 1875 and of course I wonder what motivated him to move so far West. did he come with other relatives? when did your family arrive in Oregon and where did they live before the move?
Also on the 1870 Census Joseph is from Holstein Germany, where did your family immigrate from?
Still searching and trying to get a lead.
Berny

After much research, the name BANKE exisits in Sweden, Danmark, and Germany. I have found Bankes' in the Munich telephone book, but suspect that we are a northern germanic tribe possibly one of those generically called Angles/Saxons who invaded England and other countries. Alternatively we could be of Viking stock. My Banke family came from Germany in 1838 on a ship called Minerva, arriving in Baltimore. Bernhard, his wife, his son Bernard and twin Christine, other daughter Gertrude and youngest son Herman (my direct ancestor).
Most of the Bankes' you find in places like Michigan, Atlanta area and New Jersey are from that lineage. Others in Wisconsin and Washington I believe are from the Bernard (oldest son lineage).
BTW BANKE means bank as in a bank of a dyke or a seat as in a piano seat in German, not really helpful in determining a source, but interesting.
Hope this helps.

My grandmother was a Banke (that married a Hess)from Missouri. She was 85 years old when she died in 1986 and with her ended that Banke line, since she had no living brothers to carry on the name.

This is what I have researched so far, but nothing is set in stone. And as an "excited" novice some time back, did not put sources with all entries (now wishing I had). However, they are mostly from newspaper clippings from my grandmother and local town history books from their Centennial Days; some census, too.

Bernard Banke, b. Between 1826-1827 in Germany
Married Bernadena Elfin (although my grandmother thought her last name might have been Roland)
b. Abt. 1830 in Holland. I do not have a marriage date or location for Bernard and Bernadena.
They had 6 children:
Herman J. Banke (married Martha Agnes Byrne)
Mary Banke (married unknown Blizzard)
Bernadena Banke (married unknown Putthoff)
William Henry Banke* b. 1863 in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, MO d. 1928 (married Louisiana Davis, b.1867 d. 1938)
Josephine Banke (don't know if she married)
Rosa Banke (married unknown Pfieffer)

*William Henry Banke married Lou Davis January 27, 1887 in Johnstown, MO and they had nine children:
Grace Mae Banke (married Fred DeMott)
Lynna Banke (married Charles W. Martz)
Deane Banke (married Walter L. Harrison)
Alice Beatrice Banke** (married Lewis Edward Hess)
Marie Banke (married 1st C.A. Gifford; 2nd Raymond Sherhart)
Peache Banke (married Reginald Nickerson)
Young Girl Banke (died early perhaps under 12 yrs)
Infant Boy (died as a baby)
Infant Boy (died as a baby--not twins)

**Bea Banke and Lewis Hess were my grandparents. They had one son, my father.

The Banke girls grew up in the country near the tiny town of Altona, about 3 miles east of Adrian, Bates County, MO. Lynna, Deane and Bea are buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery west of Adrian; the 2 baby boys and young girl are in France Cemetery east of Adrian, MO; Marie and Peache died in Palo Alto, CA

We are related to Joseph Francis Bancke who was born in 1843 and came from Holsien Germany. He died in 1883. It is funny how the spelling of the name changed. Is anyone else familiar with this family on the West Coast?

Berthe or Bertha Banke

Our Berthe Charlotte Banke was the first wife of
Frederick John Banke and was originally a
Bruggeman from Baltimore. She would have been
born in the 1850's. I believe that Fred had
two sisters also born in Baltimore as did his
father Herman, perhaps your Berthe is from
one of those lines?

Re: Scheuerman/Banke

Becky,
It is really interesting that the names in our two families are constantly reoccuring, Pat and I have run into this with her family a lot.
What has me even more intrigued is that not only do we have the commonality on the Banke side we now have it in the marriages, in so much as in my Banke family line we have an Anna MARIE SCHEUERMANN b circa 1828, departs Hannover in 1850, and who later marries HERMAN Banke who arrived from Germany at age 4 in 1838 with his father Bernard. Their offspring included Frederick John Banke b 1858, d 1959. Isn't it a co-incidence that we have a Scheuermann marrying a Banke but about 90 yrs apart?

What I have found so far is that BANKE is an extremely rare name even in Germany today. The frequency it appears in the telephone books there is very low, with slightly higher frequency in Northern Germany. It also appears in Denmark and Sweden, making it almost certainly of either the Angle, Jute or other Viking tribe. I believe that since it is such an unusual name with extremely low frequency that it is most likely that all Banke's are related and if we could trace back far enough would find that we were all from the same village or origin. Good luck, keep digging, as wil I.

Jeff

Sandy,
As I believe that we may have discussed before, our Bertha was in fact Bertha Chalotte Bruggemen and married Frederic John Banke.

I had previosly discounted any relationship to other Banke's in the US since I had not been able to find a link to any of them.
I now suspect the following to be true, Bernhard Banke departs from Pruesen via Bremen arriving in the US at Baltimore. He arrives on the Bark "Minerva" with wife Maria and children Herman age 4, (my ancestor), Bernhard age 12, Christine 12, Gertrude age 7, and Marian age 14.
I previously had not been aware of the siblings of Herman, so if you have any of these Banke's in your ancestors, I would like to know.

Banke surname

The Banke surname exists in several countries as is, Denmark, Germany, & Sweden.
We had the same problem with discussion around different spelling. My research
has shown that it is unlikely that it a Banke is a derivative of anything else,
with perhaps one or two exceptions: Bienke, Behnke. These are both German in origin.
Now having said that, anything is possible, due to the nature of the paople doing the
census, if a person of English origin was taking the information it is possible that
names might get changed, however if a person of German origin was taking the data the
name would then appear correct.
This actually happened in our family, we appear in Baltimore in one census spelled correctly
and in a subsequent census incorrectly, only to appear yet again spelled correctly.
All of the Banke's I have researched appear to come from the northern part of Germany, Duchy of Hannover,
Prussia, Denmark and southern Sweden, the implication being that they were probably all the same tribe.

I think that it is a bit of a stretch from MR. Bianchi (which means MR. White) to Banke, and if that were the case
it must have been one of the English speaking people taking the census.

Good luck,

Jeff

My wife's maiden name is Banka, and there are a number of them here in Kansas. The descendants of John Banka, from Alma Kansas, now live in Kansas, Colorado and in Hawaii. Of couse, not all of them were sons, so the name isn't always traceable. Word is that Banka was a derivative of "Banke", but we were never sure how Banke was spelled.
John
