Willis Banks c1880-1900?

While at a collectors' show a few months ago, I picked up a cabinet photo of a boy -- perhaps about 7 years old -- identified as Willie Banks. This was taken by Frank Thomas, Photographer, in Columbia Missouri. If anyone claims this person in their family tree, I'd be happy to send you the photo for the cost ($1) to me, plus the cost of mailing (your choice).

Banks of Elbert has been one of my favorite books since I was a boy growing up in Toccoa, Stephens County, Georgia just up the road from our ancestral home in Elbert County. My grandmother Retha Jane Acree, daughter of Nancy Catherine Banks, granddaughter of Russell Banks killed in the Civil War, great granddaughter of Ralph Banks Jr. and Elizabeth Banks, great great granddaughter of Ralph Banks Sr. and Charity Alston Banks, had three or four copies which she shared with myself and cousins. Loving history, and especially loving to see my immediate family mentioned in print, I read it many times.

I was skeptical of all the royal lines back to Charlemagne, John of Gaunt, Alfred the Great, and others including Julius Caesar until I validated the descent on ancestry in my public tree Andrew Ayers Martin. The weakest link is the step from Ralph Banks to Thomas Banks, but Elbert Banks makes a persuasive argument in the preface citing land deeds in Virginia.

Andrew Ayers Martin, M.D., J.D. native of Toccoa, Georgia, mentioned on page 136, 1972 edition.

In the 1840 Census there is a William, age 16, in the household of Andrew and Mary, in Huntingdon County, PA. That would make William's birth year about 1834-35.

Re: Descendants of Bankses of Blue Hill, Nebraska...Story Co., Iowa...Decatur Co., Iowa

No such implication was given. But hidden adoptions do exist. There are three genetic branches within the family of Richard Banks of early York Co., Maine, for example, but there is extremely good documentation not hinting at any adoptions. The DNA evidence shows something different, and is the only reliable resource.

So until I can get two matching samples from different branches within a Banks family, I cannot confirm that this genetic profile will be found in a widespread manner. Your overall family now has these two matching samples. Ideally the first samples should come from descendants of two brothers who were sons of the oldest known Banks of the family, but this is not always possible.

It would be nice to have a DNA sample also from the Nebraska Bankses of your family to confirm that the same DNA profile is found also among them. But I cannot pay for this. Once a general genetic profile is established for the family, I leave it up to others to finance the additional testing.

Ray Banks
Administrator of the Banks DNA Project

Thank you.

A descendant within the Iowa branch of the family was tested with the results shown at

http://www.members.cox.net/morebanks/BanksCharts.html

This profile was subsequently confirmed by chance by the descendant of a New York Banks man who went to early Texas. His origins were unknown, but he is a match to the Iowa participant, thus confirming this is not a recent adoption into the Banks family.

Ray Banks

Alfred Newton Banks of Huntingdon County, PA

Hi,

I have mystery on my hand regarding my maternal great great-grandfather Alfred Newton Banks. The mystery is his parents. I was told that they were William M. Banks (1835-1910) and his wife Sara / Sarah Jane (Cooper) Banks (1836-1913) and he was born June 1861. But I just learn that William's brother Jesse Banks (1838-1909) and his wife Rebecca (McConahy / McConnaughy / McCanaughy) Banks (1841-1909) also had a son name Alfred with same middle initial N who born 1861. Also learn they both born around 1859-62, but years keep changing. So I have trouble finding who my Alfred's parents are? I do know that 1900 census he was 38 and 1910 census he was 48 which would make him born in 1862. He was married to Julia Catherine Showalter. I know that he died somewhere in between 1910 and 1920, since he was in the 1910 census, he was liviing in Blair County with his sister-in-law (his wife's sister) Mary and her husband Samuel Kipe. I am so confuse, can anyone help me.

Christy Ann Varner
great great-granddaughter

Note these are Alfred's children that I know (live) with Julia Catherine Showalter:

Clara Banks b: AUG 19, 1884 - d: DEC 6, 1964; married to Milton H. Cornelius

Sennie Lavada Banks b: FEB 12, 1886- d: Dec. 29, 1949; married to William Ambrose Shetrom (My Great-Grandparents)

Sophia Elizabeth Banks b: OCT 1887 -d: OCT 6, 1929; married to Benjamin Reed

Susan Rebecca Banks b: MAR 13, 1891 (some say it 1890) - d: FEB 24, 1912

Elsie Banks b: FEB 29, 1892-d: OCT 3, 1971; married to John Alex Hamilton

Sarah May Banks b: FEB 23, 1894-d: AUG 30, 1938; married to Elmer Lancaster

Martha Banks b: SEP 18, 1889-d: NOV 25, 1972; married to Ellsworth C. Price

Roxella V. Banks (also know as Roxel Banks) b: MAR 12, 1902-d: AUG 31, 1963; married to Charles Roy Harbaugh (I was told that) and then to Earl Grissinger

David T. Banks b: NOV 20, 1903-d:AUG 3, 1971; married to Mary Helen Bookheimer.
