This cemetery is of my direct line of blood.. I can answer some questions about it, but my dad can answer more. You should be able to go to the tuscaloosa county online library to know exact names and possible dates of who was buried here.

I am the granddaughter of Rev. Joe Bankston, originally of Barnesvile,Ga, moved to Youngstown, Ohio. The picnic is July 14,2012 at Boardman Park, Boardman, Ohio. Found a large contingent of Bankston's in Pittsburgh and they will be joining us.
There are other Bankston Reunion's being planned in Lima, for the decendants of Nathaniel Bankston, who I found out was the uncle my grandfather. Also, one in Arkansas. Still trying to find the connection with those Bankstons and the Pittsburgh Bankston's.

Thanks! I've looked up all the references in the Craig footnote. I own the 1693 census book, as well as the Acrelius book. All the other references I downloaded from the net. Unfortunately, in none of them is found the source for the Fuxerna Parish birthplace of Anders Bengtsson. I feel sure that the information from Dr. Craig is correct, but am frustrated in not being able to find it documented. I'm thinking someone may have found the information in Swedish Church records. I'm going to try to follow up on that.
Martha

Hi, Cynthia! I saw that footnote in Dr. Craig's book, but thought it referred only to the subsequent child, Joseph. I'll try to track down the listed sources. As per your and Ron's encouragement, I've started to put my research into book form! And of course, finding gaps where I don't have documentation.

Thanks for your help!

Martha

Hi Martha,

Takk for Sist! (Thanks for the last visit)

The citation should be the 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware which includes a footnote you may wish to include as well.

Peter Craig's book shows the 1640 birthplace of Anders Bengtsson as Hanstrom Farm in Faxarn, today Fuxerna parish, Alvborg lan, northeast of Gothenburg. His footnote lists a number of sources: Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 2:227, 342; George Smith, History of Delaware County, Pa. 555; Pere Kalm, Resa till Norra Amerika, Tillaggsband, edited by Elfving 219; Peter Kalm, Travels in North America, transl. by Adolph B. Benson, 723, 728; Israel Acrelius, A History of New Sweden, as translated by William H. Reynolds 90, 181; Jehu Curtis Clay, Annals of the Swedes on the Delaware (4th ed., 1938) 51,60, 96, 119; Andrew Bankson will, Phila. wills, C:38; LLP, 1:184-86.

Cynthia
Hope someone can help me. I have these pieces of undocumented information in my Bankson database. If anyone has the references I'd surely appreciate it.

Birthplace of Anders Bengtsson: Hanstrom Farm, Fuxerna Parish, Sweden. Where did this info come from?

Joseph Bankson, 1696-1732, born in Frederick County, Maryland. I think the years are right, but what record shows him born in Frederick County?

I've found everybody to be so helpful with clarifying my research, hope someone has the answers to these questions!

Martha

He was the son of Lawrence Bankston and Nancy McDaniel. He married Elizabeth Clifton and his second wife was Elizabeth "Betsy" Souther Nix. He had 6 Children that I know of.

I believe this is my ancestor, John Quincy Bankston, who emigrated to Colorado with his family and died there. The dates match perfectly and the older sister (Lamela) would be a fit as well since he supposedly named his daughter Lamelia after an older sister. Would you like to talk?

I am not convinced of the parents of Ann who married Andrew Bankson, but in my notes, and I will have to go back and find out what I read that I got this from, but I have scrawled "Robert Lee, father-in-law of Andrew Bankson" Also under that I put "check on this"...and another note in quotes, "Robert Lee of Anson Co. appears on a list of British Loyality Claims. These were claims to the British Government for restitution of losses incurred during the war"
My question is...Could the James Lee who married a Bankston's daughter have had a father named Robert and a sister named Ann (or Nancy Ann) who would have wed Andrew, son of Lawrence and Rebecca? Thus becoming the Ann Bankson, widow of Andrew, that I am searching for??? Any thoughts??? I will have to go back and read a lot of data in order to find where I found this. Wish me luck!

She is the Ann Bankston widow of Andrew. I don't know who her parents were and neither do I know who are the parents of William Adare/O'dear. The first record I have of William Adare is when he received land in Wilkes Co. in 1785. Before that I don't know where he came from. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and fought under Elijah Clarke. He received land grants in Wilkes Co. for his service. Elijah Clarke was previously in Anson Co. NC before the war and he married Hannah Harrington the daughter of Thomas Harrington who was also previously in Anson County. William's son Bozeman Adare sold land in 1894 in Montgomery Co. NC which was cut out of Anson County. This land was located near the land of Andrew and Ann Bankston. Bozeman was associated with the Harrington/Arrington, Whitmill, Bankston, Colson, Wakefield and Lee families of Montgomery Co. North Carolina.

This is the deed where Bozeman sold the land. This was taken from a book that abstracted the early deeds of Montgomery County.
MONTGOMERY CO. NC DEEDS - page 166
29 Dec. 1794 - Bozamon Adare to William Crittendon, 100 pounds, 140 acres on Lick Branch joining John Smith, Thomas Naron, and William Whitfield. Wit: Whitmill Harrington and James Bankston. Signed Bozamon Adare.

I think it was William Crittendon that married Sarah Lee, the daughter of Robert Lee. I think I have that right.

I tried to pinpoint where the land was located. It was located in what is present day Stanley Co. North Carolina.
Lick Branch came off of Long Creek and was near Great Bear Creek which is where Andrew Bankston had property and so did the Harrington family.

Who are Nancy Ann Bankston's parents or... how does she fit in to the Bankston families of that time? Is she the same as the widow of Andrew? The survey, etc. is quite compelling because this Ethelred Wood is connected to Matthew Wood who involved with the three Bankston sons claiming land inherited from their father (Lawrence) and mother (Rebecca Hendricks) in Wilkes County, Georgia. I was never able to determine the connection of the Woods to the Bankstons.

This is my proof for thinking that ANN BANKSTON was the same person as NANCY ANN BANKSTON. I found this at the Georgia Department of Archives, located in Morrow Ga.

From the Ga. Surveyor General Plats, Colonial and Headright.
Plat Book II, page 170:
Plat for NANCY BANKSTON, in Jackson Co. Georgia, in the year 1801 - on MARBURY'S CREEK; the land being next to Cobb's land, Evan's land, T. Camp's land, and T. Jones's land. The chain carriers were Burrell Camp and Sherwood Camp.

Then I found in the deeds of Jackson Co. Ga. several deed conveyances that named ANN BANKSTON as the original land owner of this same land. Here is just one of those deeds.

Dec. 22, 1804 - Jackson Co. Ga. - Deed from Ethelred Wood, collector of tax, to Thomas Camp Sr., both of Jackson County, $3.00 for 600 acres, surveyed in the name of ANN BANKSTON, Thomas Camp and Thomas Jones as appears by sundry warrants returned by William Camp... Said land lying on the waters of Marbury's Creek, bounded by Cobbs, Evans, Jones and Cole. Wit: Nathan Camp & Disey Wood.

Nancy was the only female Bankston to receive land by grant in Jackson County.

Thank you. I'm especially interested in my Illinois Bankstons, and who may be my Elizabeth Bankston Taulbee's parents...especially her mother. My mtDNA Haplogroup is 'U2e' which is probably Swedish, and my female direct mtDNA line is stopped at Elizabeth Bankston Taulbee. So my next generation mtDNA would be her mother...wife of Silas Bankston?

MaryE

The Bankston family is fairly complete, but I don't have anything on the Adare family....other than what you gave me, that she may have been the sister of William, aunt of Bozeman...who were her parents? any leads. Who were Williams parents? So many questions...oh, and why do people keep using misinformation to register for DAR? How does it pass???? Mine-boggling!
This is MaryE again. I need to correct my above post. The lady who has her Bankstons pedigree on Ancestry.com has her Elijah Bankston in Illinois as the son of Elijah B. Bankston who died in Georgia 1849, and it is this Elijah who is the son of Jacob Bankston 1731- 1817 in Butt Co., Georgia.

That would still have the teenage Bankston siblings....Elizabeth and Elijah... making the long trip from Georgia to Illinois without parents, etc. I think their parents made the trip too, and are among the several adult Bankston's in early Illinois, and lived on for a good many more years.

I'm an Illinos Bankston descendant and am interested in these posts. My Bankston was Elizabeth Bankston who married Isaac D. Taulbee about 1802/3 in Clay Co., Kentucky. They left Perry Co., Kentucky in about mid 1820's and moved up to Fayette Co., Illinois where Elizabeth's brother had already moved to by 1809.

I believe...without concrete proof.... my Elizabeth Bankston Taulbee was a sister of Elijah Bankston, and they were both children of Silas Bankston, the early day Illinois Baptist Preacher.

But another Bankston researcher has a family tree on Ancestry.com that states Elijah Bankston was the son of Jacob Bankston who never left Georgia....and lived on for many more years. I just can not visualize my Elizabeth Bankston and her brother Elijah leaving Georgia as teenagers and making their way to Illinois, leaving their father behind in Georgia to live for many more years.

Do you know if my Elizabeth Bankston Taulbee descends from Ann Odare/Adair?

Another Mary...but I will sign off as MaryE

Mary, I never found a definitive document to prove that Anne that married Andrew Bankston was indeed Anne O'Dear or O'Dare. Adare/Adair was spelled many different ways. However what I do have is circumstantial evidence that she was an Adare. Bozeman Adare sold some land in Montgomery Co. NC in 1794 and James Bankston was a witness to that sale. The land was located near the land that Andrew Bankston had owned. By the way I have proof that Ann's full name was Nancy Ann Bankston. Bozeman had a sister in Jackson Co. Ga. named Nancy Adare. Well it is believed that she was his sister. But I think Bozeman's father William Adare named his daughter Nancy after his own sister, Nancy Ann. If you would like to discuss this family further you can e-mail me at naomivickers@centurytel.net
Naomi

Can you help me out? I am related to the Bankstons.. Andrew, to James, then Jemima who married a Hooper, this is my direct line thru my father. It has been a constant "burr" in my backside that so many people just add in names because its on Ancestry.com. If you have any research that proves one way or the other, I would be interested in seeing it. Thank you. Mary

I know an edler woman in Barnsville--a Bankston maiden name--who grew up in Johnstonville when it was active. It must have been active until about 50 or 60 years ago. There were apparently businesses and a Post Office at one time. I have driven Johnstonville Road and could not tell right off where the town would have been. There is a Lamar County history published. It is an older book and I have not been able to get a copy--just access at local libraries. I think I have run across that book on ancestry.com.

I do have a Wilborn Bankston (not my direct ancestor so I haven't followed him much) dates 1805-1892. His father would be Hiram Bankston and that is my direct ancestor. I have Wilborn as having died in Monroe County GA. Lamar County was made about 1921 from several counties including Monroe, so that fellow is a possibility. That might be your fellow. He had a brother named Willoughby Bankston who was my ancestor.

I didn't grow up here so there are many things about the area that I do not know. I moved here as an adult to work in the public school system. I'm learning from scratch myself. At least I'm close now so working this line of genealogy is easier than being in a different area.

Sara Jane Overstreet, sjoverstreet@bellsouth

I have Bankston ancestry in Lamar and Pike Counties in GA. Let me just start with one or two. Charlotte Bankston married Bussey, and she was the child of James Abner Bankston (1832-1879) of Pike Co GA. J. A. Bankston was the child of Willoughby Slaydon Bankston died 1870. I have that Bankston line back to New Amsterdam. Also, Lamar County GA was only formed about 100 years ago when it was taken out of several mother counties with Monroe Co and Pike Co GA among the counties from which Lamar Co GA was formed. While I do not have the name of the particular individual in your query, I do know Johnstonville GA history--now no longer a town. I live in the area. That does not mean I have found everybody, but at least I have met local edler Bankstons who know more than I do!
Is it possible that Benjamin M. and Thomas M. are the same person? I can't imagine why, but maybe Thomas changed his name to Benjamin.

Well, I know Micajah Bankston m. 29 Aug 1852 Sarah Jackson, dau of James Jackson and Amanda Smith, and sister of Calvin Gilmore Jackson, who is my wife's gr/grandfather. Most of the Jacksons lived around Lone Star in RR Co. and are buried in Lone Star Cemetery. I seem to recall that the Bankstons lived mostly around Detroit -- but it's been a long time since I did anything on that line.
