Hi Jenny,

Here's a message I posted to some more people on Ancestry - it may help.

My maternal grandparents were Banns. David (one of my G. grandfathers) came from Poynton with Worth in Cheshire, UK. (South of Stockport nr. Manchester). James & Eliza Bann are my G.G grandparents, whose parents Henry and Sarah (buried St. George's Churchyard, Poynton),are also from Poynton, Henry from nearby Adlington. An Ichobod Bann is also buried in St. George's Churchyard. I've taken photos of the Banns MIs (Memorial Inscriptions) in the churchyard.

I'll email the photos of the MIs if you send me your email address. (If you're a little apprehensive about this you could create a new one in Hotmail or Yahoo.

Regards,

Terry

Hi,

I'm a Bann who grew up very near Macclesfield; Ichabod is my 5xgreat-grandfather (I'm descended from his son Samuel, as far as I can tell). Very interested in finding out more! FamilySearch is turning up a lot of other Banns scattered around the Prestbury area in the early 1700s, around the same time as Thomas, but there's nothing to say how they were related.

Jenny

Hi again Hilary.

Should have said thanks for the info. Wonder why I or my cousin never found George before.

As Simeon and Sophia married in Dec '06 it is logical that they would have had an older child. Didn't really hang about back then did they?

Susan

george was born in 1807 (baptised Oct 7th) to Sophia and Simeon. I think he was the oldest child and was followed by James Hope, Ann, elizabeth, Samuel, eliza and Susannah. I dont know about ann, eliabeth & eliza but the others all stayed in Macclesfield working in the silk mills. after George's 2nd wife (Sarah Hulme)died he ended up in the workhouse and died there in 1881, although his 2 sons were both living in Macclesfield with their families so relationships may have been strained. his grandson James broke away from the family and moved to Liverpool and then Crewe which is where my grandfather and father were born. Which of Ichabod's children (9?) do you descend from? Hilary (a she!)

Hi Hilary

I don't know of George at all! When was he born then?

I have James Hope B and Ann; Samuel and Hannah; Susannah and James; and Eliza, although I don't have her after 1851 census. So. you are a cousin, but from someone I didn't know existed. More Please!!! Although you HAVE given me some names to be going on with.

I have never lived in Macclesfield. My dad had lived round the Manchester area until WW11. Mum was from Blackburn and so when married they lived a few miles east of there. Grandma spent her last few years back in Macclesfield though.

Regards
Susan

ps. Are you Hilary female or male?

Hi. My grandfather, grt grandfather and grt grt grandfather were all James Bann so it gets confusing. James who was m. to Eliza Williams was the only son of George Bann and Mary moss.(Mary died and Geo. remarried to Sarah Hulme and had another son Samuel) george was the oldest son of Simeon and Sophia Pownall. his brothers were James hope Bann (m ann Robinson)and Samuel (married to Hannah Newton). There were also some sisters - Susannah who married James Clayton and poss Eliza and ann. Ichabod was their uncle so yes we must be related - do you still live in Maccledsfield? Hilary

Hi Hilary

Is your James the son of Samuel Bann and Hannah Newton?

Simeon had another son that I know of, James Hope Bann, who married Ann Robinson. Their son James was also Hope Bann (I think).

We must be cousins of sorts. Ichabod was my 4x grandfather (think I have calculated that correctly).

Regards

Susan

Hi Terry and Susan, i am very interested to read about the Banns. My father Bob posted the initial 'Banns in Macclesfield' query in 2004 and I too have since started family history research. James and Eliza are also my grt grt grandparents! So far as I can work out, James' grandfather was Simeon, the younger brother of Ichabod & they were the sons of George Bann and Margaret Barber. I hadn't come across Henry & Sarah - I am living in NZ now so everything done via the net. wd be interested to hear any other links. Hilary

Hi Terry
Pleased to receive your message.
I've been trying to line up the names you gave with those in my direct tree. Do you have the surnames of the wives, and dates?

My grandfather x4, Ichabod, died 1844. Do you have the photo of his grave? I'd love to see it. In fact I'd love to see them all.

Where I grew up we were the only Banns. I thought it was an unusual name until I started on family history.
Hi there
I am a Bann by birth and was just browsing boards looking for possible connections when I came upon your message. I don't know if you are still looking but I just did a quick search. I have found a James Bann b 1861 (parents James - born Cheshire and Eliza - born Ireland) who married Annie Mary Savage in West Derby 1881,Q1. Although both born in Cheshire they lived at the time of 1881 census at 39 Barnet St, W Derby and had a baby Ethel who died in Chorlton Oct-Dec 1883.
1891 and 1901 census they were living in Chorlton and in 1901 had children Harry (or Henry), Frank, Sidney, Annie, Emily, James and Elsie.
One of my ancestors is Ichabod Bann, if you find your way back to him through your family I would be interested to hear from you.
Regards, Susan

very old photo of Marian Bann

I am willing to send this scanned photo of the person named above. I was going thru a 100 yr old photo album that is passed down to the eldest child and now it is with my father and soon to me. I decided to scan all the pics in hopes someone can see what their family members looked like. My son happens to have the "nose" of someone in there and maybe you would have something. email me if you would like to see the photo. Sorry there isn't much i can tell you about it. All it says is family friend. Mooney or Wein. My email address is sum1sirishqueen@aol.com. thanks and good luck!

Jen Mooney-Collins

I am afraid I know nothing about the origin of the name . In fact I am trying to find out more about them. My great grandmother Elizabeth was a BAnn born in Derbyshire but her parents were David and Sarah Bann married in 1851 at Prestbury, address Worth in Cheshire. Apart from that I know nothing. Are we connected, do you have any other imformation?
MArion Williamson
Nottingham

I have acquired an old photo that has the following on the back: "This is Margaret and Josephine Bann on the picture Josephine curls are very heavy and shade her face." If these are folks from your family please let me know as I would like to see these returned to their family. There is no date or location on the photos. I would guess them to be taken in the early 1900's and there are actually three children in the photo, but one of them is not identified. I acquired them in an Austin Texas antique shop.
