And I apologize because looking at the photo it is clearly Sophronia instead of Saphronia.
This is not my family; I just take extra photos when I'm at a cemetery anyway. Lakeside is a special one to me as it's where the majority of my ancestors from Hamlin, NY, were buried. There are a lot of old stones in the old section that are becoming too aged to read. :(

Re: Vikings?

My Davidson line has a Viking heritage, as proven by DNA testing. My DNA haplotype is "I," and that means "Viking." Of the 75+ men currently in the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA Project, only about six of us are "Viking." Based on my VERY brief review of Viking history, many Viking lines eventually moved into Scotland and the surrounding areas, and as time went by, it was probably hard to tell "true" Scots from the Vikings.

It appears that I have traced my family back to a David Davidson who was in James City Co., VA by at least 1682. His surviving naturalization papers show that he was born in Holland, and Holland was the main trading partner with Scotland in the 1600s (and hence, there is still an active Scottish church in Holland today). Holland was also where many fled to escape religious persecution over the years. As such, MAYBE David's father had moved from Scotland to Holland (just one possibility). The Bantons could have also been Viking, and they could have eventually become part of the Scottish culture.

The older brother of my great-grandfather was named Eli Banton Davidson (born in Cumberland Co., VA but lived most of his life in Buckingham Co., VA). I have never been able to determine why he had that middle name. I don't know the maiden name of Eli's great-grandmother Mary (my 4th ggm), so I don't know if she could have been a Banton. Other than that possibility, I see no other obvious "Davidson/Banton connections," except that there were simply a lot of Bantons living in that area (so maybe Eli was named just for a close family firend).

No, my mother was not a Banton - she was a Cunningham. Leslie Ann Banton married Reese Berkley Cunningham and they had a son named Dewey Glover Cunningham b. 11/17/1925. My mother is Dewey's daughter. I estimate that
Leslie Ann Banton was born sometime between
1900-1905, but I just don't know. I do not
know of any brothers or sisters.

Hi Guys,
Banton is a village in Scotland, (Google banton, Kilsyth), this is a village of about 1000 persons and offered up many travellers over the last 200 years including my relatives, they are known to have travelled to USA, Australia, Mexico, Phillipines and Island locations around the USA. The banton name is not known any earlier than from the village in Scotland (Its original name is Bantoin from 1500's just before after the battle of Kilsyth in 1645 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kilsyth/banton.htm

Per another post on the internet (RootsWeb Buckingham Co., VA message board), William Banton married Mary "Polly" Glover in Buckingham Co., VA, and they had Glover R. Banton (in 1814), Charles Mitchel Banton and David Banton. William Banton later married Anna Smith and had six more children with her. If the above is correct, then I would suspect that your Bantons come from one of the three sons of William and Mary (Glover) Banton, based on the use of the given name of "Glover" in your family.

The brother of my great-grandfather Thomas A. Davidson was named Eli Banton Davidson (Eli was born in Cumberland Co., VA and died in Buckingham Co., VA). Their mother was Vitula (Sandridge) Davidson, and I note that an Eli B. Sandridge lived in Albemarle Co., VA in the 1800s, as did several other people in the Sandridge/Sandige family (and Amherst Co., VA was created from a part of Albemarle, and Nelson Co., VA was created from a part of Amherst). I have not been able to prove that the middle initial of the Eli B. Sandridge in Albemarle Co., VA stood for "Banton," but that would certainly not surprise me. I see no earlier person on the "Davidson side of the family" that was named Eli or Banton, so I suspect that those given names came from the "Sandridge side of the family." It appears that Vitula's family came from the Sandridge family in Albemarle Co., VA.

The Bantons were Franch Huguenots, I believe, and many came through the part of Goochland Co., VA that is Powhatan Co., VA today. Many then migrated to the part of Albemarle Co., VA that is Buckingham Co., VA today. Based on the above, I suspect a Sandridge/Banton marriage took place at one time, but no proof. There were also Glovers in Buckingham Co., VA who were associated with the Bantons, as I recall. If you come across a Banton/Sandridge connection, please let me know.

I didn't see another stone nearby that would look like her husband, although there are many old, unreadable stones in the area. I have a photo if anyone wants it.
~Kelly
