George John Hussel from findagrave

Birth: Nov. 11, 1855
Charleston
Charleston County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Oct. 17, 1908
Dunnellon
Marion County
Florida, USA

George John Hussel was the only son of Christian H. Hussel and his wife, Caroline Bappler. Both of his parents were born in Germany. George and his three sisters spent their childhood in New Hanover County, North Carolina, where their father worked as a shoemaker, grocer and farmer.

Soon after his father died in 1883, George moved his mother to Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked as a clerk. After her death he married the widowed Madalina Cocowitch Grooms in 1893. Through the marriage he became the stepfather of Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Grooms, 7. In May 1894, the family added a daughter, Wilhelmina Christine Hussel, who was born in Summerville.

About 1900, the family moved to Dunnellon, Florida, to be closer to Madalina's two brothers. By 1905, George held business licenses and was serving as town clerk and tax assessor.

On 26 Oct 1908, The Ocala Evening Star, published an article on Page 1 in Ocala, Marion County, Florida, about George Hussel's unexpected death and removal to Summerville, South Carolina. At Boone Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery he rests among relatives of his wife.

"Death of George J. Hussel

"Our community was shocked to learn last Sunday that George J. Hussel had died the night before ten o'clock. Although he had been ill for some time it was not thought that he was so seriously ill, and his death was indeed a shock and surprise to the community. Paralysis was the cause of his death. Mr. Hussel was born in Charleston, S. C., on Nov. 11, 1855; had been a resident of Dunnellon for many years, and no one of our citizens was held in higher esteem than he. He was a member of Woodsmen of the World and Knights of Pythias, and was active in the workings of the lodges until his death. Services were held over the remains Sunday morning at the Masonic hall where a host of friends and society brothers gathered to pay tribute of respect to the dead, and offer condolence to the bereaved ones. The body was carried to Summerville, S. C., on the noon train where it was laid to rest. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Madalina Hussel, and one daughter, Miss Wilhelmina Hussel."

Do you have information on your german ancestry? Helpershain appears to be in Hesse which is where our family came from. Give me some names/dates and I'll see if I find them in my records.

Hello,
My maiden is Baepler. My Baepler ancestors are from Helpershain, Germany. I have documented information about several generations of this family. My family arrived in Baltimore, lived there for a while and then eventually moved to Concordia, Missouri. Two Baeplers owned a mill there and Andrew Baepler founded St. Paul College, which still exists as a Lutheran high school. Andrew married twice: first to Josephine Axe and then to Sophia Birkner.

If you think that your family may be related, it might be interesting to compare notes.

Danielle Baepler Burrus

That is the name I have from census records for Caroline & Christian's son. Old fashioned handwriting or a typo might result in him being called George I instead of George J. I doubt there could have been another son. Didn't you have a nice newspaper obituary for Christian? Did it mention his childrens' names?

Thanks for the lead, John. The 1900 census has the family indexed as REESE, but it's Josephine (w/daus Caroline, Gertrude and Marguerita) there w/him. She is a widow in 1910 living in FL w/ Gertrude and Marg. Caroline has marr Frank E HENRY. In 1920 Josephine is living w/them. Her inheritance must not have been too large since in 1930- aged 65ish- she is a housekeeper for a Dr's family.

Good work Jill:
I was in Raleigh (state archives) for a few hours this weekend and followed up with the Caroline Bappler line, I found her origional probated will which was probated 6/23/1899 from Charleston SC, where she had been living as a widow, with her daughter Josephine S. BUSE. Josephine must have been the only surviving child by that time, since she got 100% of the estate. (assets in NC and SC). Caroline is listed as a widow in the 1888 Charleston City Directory, with a "George I. ?, watchman SC railroad Co. Maybe she had another son? The BUSE family were bakers, and had several sons which could have married Josephine. I've posted on their family page to see if I can find out which one.

Very excited to report I've found our Philipp Baeppler & family arriving on the Emma from Bremen in 1851. So both older daus- Carolina and Sophia- married in the US. Surprised to see their destination listed as Albany since I've had enough trouble following them from NYC to NC and back and wondering which was their original destination and why they went to the other.
