Hey, i just stumbled upon this site i am a Baptiste from Grenada. The Baptiste surname is french and derived from the distinguishing epithet of St. John the Baptist, who baptized people, including Jesus Christ, in the river Jordan (Mark 1:9), and was later beheaded by Herod. The name is from Latin Baptista (Greek baptistes, a derivative of the verb baptizein ‘to dip in liquid’, ‘to baptize’).
I was once told by another Baptiste family in St.Patrick (to whom i'm surpossed to be related, not sure) that the surname entered Grenada from a family of brothers during the colonial days.These brothers lived in different areas in Grenada including St.Patrick's St.Davids and elsewere i'm not sure. The Baptiste family is big and is related to the Alexis and Noel families among others. The surname has also many variations in spellings. My surname came from my father's side and if i'm correct his gran or great gran father was Spanish, i know is different from the french origen but that can be possible since we had many settlers on the island including the french the spanish and the english.

Hi. I hope somebody out there can help us. My mother and I are looking for a great grandfather (my third and my mother's great great): Jacob Baptiste. His tombstone is in a Jackson County, Mississippi cemetery and reads: Jacob Baptiste, A Native of Italy. His date of birth: 15 Mar 1788 Date of death: 17 Feb 1866.

He married Eugenie Krebs in about 1837 and we tentatively have 10 children listed for them (some are via census records and some have just been given to us from various places):
Catherine Louise (our ancestor); Antonio, Vincent, Lucretia, John F., Brigitta Eugenie, Agnes Valentine, Helen H., Peter, and Isabella.

I have copies of land patents for a couple thousand acres of land purchased between what became Jackson County and Mobile Alabama throughout the early to mid 1800s by Jacob Baptiste -- either soley or in some combination with men named David Stephenson or William de Forrest Holley. One source states that Jacob Baptiste was already a vast landowner when he married Eugenie Krebs -- and inherited even more land from the Krebs family.

All of this is well and good... But what we don't know.. Is who was Jacob Baptiste? :) We would appreciate ANY input here and look forward to hearing from you.

I am researching my gg grandfather and his name is Chief John Baptiste from Baptiste Lake, Ontario. I am curious to know why the name John(Jean)Baptiste is so common. Is it a Christian name given to someone? My gg grandfather was 100 percent Algonquin Indian and has a French name. I found out that he was born in Montreal Canada and his father was also John Baptiste. If anyone knows any details of this family it would be very much appreciated. I know he was born December 6th 1941/42 and died in 1920. He married Madeline Benway from Golden Lake, Ontario.

There is also something odd that I wanted to mention, some of the Baptista's including my father have their names spelled, Baptiste-go figure, LOL:

My great-grandfather: Matthias Gonsalves Baptista?, wife Maria Jesus?
Supposedly they come from either Madeira or Mainland Portugal. They might have lived in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu and died there?
My great-grandmother: Antonia Branco, b: Nov. 10,1873, d: June 8,1942, ??? The names of their children are: Antone, Minnie, Maggie, John, and Manuel.

Have very little from, only what I have was off his gravestone:
Grandfather: Antone Baptista b: Feb. 23, 1897, Hawaii?, d: May 1977, Kalopa, Hawaii. My grandfather lived in Paauhau, then Honokaa. This is on the Big Island of Hawaii. He did serve as a veteran of WW1 as a Private in the Army.

I'm looking for any family that I may have out there in big world.

My grand father was a West Indian from Trinidad, his name was Joseph Baptiste. My grand mother's name was Enid De freitas she was originally from Venezuela but moved to Trinidad and married to marry my grand father.

As the story goes, her family did not approved of the marriage. But they were married regardless, they had 5 children together. All born and raised in Trinidad.
