Nothing for Lillian's husband's side, but perhaps Janet's sister, Sharon, could help there. would love to hear from you. K.Cook

I am looking for information about John Barben who was born about 1800 in Pensylvania. He married Mary M. (last name unknown, born 1808 in PA). We have found him in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, Pa. in tax data from 1838-1839. He died in Cromwell Twp. in 1839. John and Mary had six children. Five of the children were Alexander born 2/12/1824, Joseph J. born 1827, Rachel M. born 1830, John F. born 1833, and Solomon born 1839. All later census data for Alexander Barben indicates that John Barben was born in Pennsylvania. Any help would be very much appreciated. John appears to have had a brother named Matthew.

Re: Looking for my ancesstors.

I think that we are from the same Barben family from Newton Hamilton, Mifflin County, Pa. My great great grandmother was Josephine Barben. I believe she was the daughter (born abt.1850) of Alexander Barben and Susan Guran. The information from a family bible indicates that Susan and Josephine were born in NJ, and Alexander was born in PA. Josephine married David F. Cassady about 1868 in Wayne Twp. They raised 12 children in Wayne Twp. where David was a farmer. In the 1880 census, Josephine and David are living in Wayne Twp.with their chidren. Alexander and Susan were living in Newton Hamilton with Susan's mother, Nancy Guran (born 1808, NJ), and some of their children - Alexander M., Joseph Jackson, Emma, Elizabeth, and Alice. I have learned that additional siblings may be John A., Ellen, Nancy Ann, and Martha Ann. In the 1900 census, Alexander and Susan are living alone on Church Street in Newton Hamilton. According to census data, Alexander was born Feb. 1827 and Susan was born Oct. 1826. I recently visited Newton Hamilton where Josephine is buried in the cemetery at the corner of Church St. and Barben St. I have found an A.J. Barben who was an undertaker in Mt. Union during the early 1900s. I don't know which son his father was. J. Jackson Barben and his wife, M. Margaret, are buried in the Mt. Union cemetery. Edward Cassidy Barben w/Nan, and J. Frank Barben w/family are also buried at Mt. Union. This is about all that I know of the Barbens. I have no idea where Alexander is from or where the family was prior to 1865. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. I have posted a photograph of David and Josephine on the Mifflin County genweb site.

His family had supposedly come from Switzerland, but then through a cousin, I learned they were French, back in the 1300-1400's. There is a La Barben, France, you can look up on the internet. I haven't made the connection to my husband, but it sure has been fun trying.

Good Luck with your research.
~Becky

Mickie, I hope you see this. I am doing research on the Barbens. I began Genealogy about 3 months ago and I find it fascinating and a little bit frustrating. Let's trade information. Do you have the information on Joy's children and grandchildren? Either post a message here or write direct to my e-mail address:Lavender@beachaccess.net

Hi Doris
I do not know where to begin. All I know is my Grandfather
and his family -- the Barben's - lived in the Germantown
area of Philadelpia. He was one of 7 I believe. They ALL lived
in the city for a long time.
They were the "infamous" Barben Bros. Moving Company. Also
my Grandfather drove a bus for the city's public transportation
system at the time. Please feel free to share what you know.
I have my Grandmother's Bible which does have all the sibs
names.
My email address is: cjjones@netwiz.net
thanks for posting!
Cj

Barbens in Philadelphia

I am looking for family related to my Grandfather, Edward James Barben.
He was one of the "Barben Bros." a moving company. I recall visiting an
aunt's rowhouse in the city. I think it was in the Germantown section. I was
a little girl then. I recall someone pointing out one of the big moving trucks.
My Grandfather was still with us then. He passed in the early 70's.
I would love to connect the family ties.
My mom is Nancy Lynn Barben, born in Phila. in the late 40's.
I was born in the 60's.
any help would be appreciated.
