Raymond R. Barber, 90,
formerly of East 29th St., died on Saturday morning July 19, 2008 at St. Mary's Home East following a brief illness. A resident of the Erie area all of his life, he was born in Godard, Pa. on September 14, 1917 a son of the late George and Ida Drake Barber. Ray was retired and had worked at the Continental Rubber Works in Erie for over 44 years. He was the Treasurer of the Rubber Employees Federal Credit Union and a member of the Erie Chapter of Federal Credit Unions Board of Directors for over 20 years and also served as a League Director of Pennsylvania District One from 1967 to 1997. He was an Army veteran of WW II serving in the Third and Seventh Armored Division in Europe and receiving the Purple Heart. Ray was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a life member of the Siebenbuerger and Sunflower Clubs, the Nuova Aurora Society, Moose Lodge, VFW Post #470, Disabled American Vets Chapter 73, American Legion Carl Neff Post #571, State Police of Crawford and Erie Counties, and the Regional Police of Erie and Crawford Counties. Survivors include a son, Raymond C. Barber and his wife Jane of Erie; a grandson, Navy Lt. Commander Richard Barber and his wife D.J. stationed in Stuttgart, Germany; a great grandson, Jared Barber. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 63 years, Mabel Eller Barber on May 20, 2001; a brother, Edward Barber in 1938 and a sister Luella Wygant in 2006. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Monday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to prayer services there on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Rosary Church at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
