It is the Maplewood Cemetery book and contains a data base of the cemetery stones and special notes for the family. You will find Luthana Barber Day and John A., Cora B.
croberts, Minta Barber is my GG Grandfather. I am interested in information that you have posted. (1) You stated that Minta & Temperance were married October 12, 1842. Do you have some documentation of that? I would like to have a copy. (2) Do you have documentation that his middle name is Jefferson? I would like to have a copy of that documentation of that too. (3) I have seen a couple of people state that Minta & Temperance had a child named Naomi Temperance. How do you know that and do you have documentation of that. I would like to have a copy of that also. By the way I believe that Sampson Barber of Carroll County Georgia (1840 Census) is Minta's Father. I have gathered a lot of circumstantial evidence of that. Thanks for your help.

I am closing this string and moving the discussion to the Battey Surname message board here at Ancestry.com, since most of the discussion is on the Amos and Robert Battey families at this point. The Battey Surname Query will be entitled "Robert and Amos Barber, Peru, NY", and the first entry will be a direct copy of the text of the Simeon Barber Story.

Even more interesting. Sadly I can not print out the article page you sent. For some odd reason the entire page doesn't come out despite trying to send it to various places. I can read it online at least.
Mr. Harkness may be correct about Robert not belonging to the local meeting. Tho he was a birthright Quaker, he may not have practiced as an adult.
It is frustrating that I can not locate Amos Battey in the 1810 or 1820 census. In 1800, he had a son and a daughter both under 10 which would have made for a very early marriage for he and his wife Sarah as she was born c1783. By 1830, the youngest person in the household was a male 20-30. I only know of the three children mentioned in the Samson Battey genealogy: Laura born 1879-1800 (who I mentioned in the previous comment), Deborah born 1800-1810, Sylvanus born 1812 and then the unknown son listed in the 1800 census who presumably did not live to adulthood. I've no idea what became of Deborah tho the Samson Battey genealogy says the children went to Michigan and in a letter from Katherine Battey Ketchum (Robert's daughter) dated 4 June 1835 Marshall, MI she reports that "Uncle Amos children are in the territory" but she has not heard from them.
I look forward to the "more coming" but as a PS I am leaving the country next week for six months and tho I will be able to read and enjoy this conversation, my files will be back in America.

First my sources. All I know about the Battey family comes from two sources. One is "Samson Battey of Rhode Island: The Immigrant Ancestor and His Descendants" compiled and published by H. V. Battey, Ouncil Bluffs, Iowa, 1932. The other source is also the origin of the story of Simeon Barber, and has additional information about Simeon Barber and Robert and Amos Battey. It is "A Collection of Articles: A History of Peru, New York" (in 2 volumes) by J. Warren Harkness and others, compiled by Ann and Lincoln Sutherland, first published in the 1960's and republished in a run of 500 in 2003. Books 1 and 2 were available for $10 apiece, plus $3 shipping and handling, in 2006, plus a volume 3 at $15 + 3 S. & H., which I have not seen. Look up the "Northern New York American-Canadian Genealogical Society" on the internet, or write to PO Box 1256, Plattsburgh, NY, 12901-0120.
I am attaching the page with the story in it from Volume 1, page 80. I'll have a lot more to say about it in a couple of days. In reply to some of the things posted by djgips on Oct. 20:
Your statement about Amos being in Easton in 1800 made a light go off in my head. She was not raised by the as stated in the article, because whe was adopted by Thomas Reynolds, a farmer...in Easton. She appears to be a member of the family in 1820. I never considered that the mother did not marry Thomas Reynolds, but more on that next time.
According to author H. W. Harkness, it is not likely that Robert Battey was a member of the Society of Friends, his argument being that none of the family was buried in the Society graveyard. Although his store was the primary supplier to the people in the Union, his property was not in Society tract. Amos was living in Peru in 1815 with a wife and 3 children (Samson Battey Book), when he had a greenhouse where he raised exotic plants (Harkness book). I know the age of Amos and daughter Laura; do you know the ages of any other family members?
More coming

Thanks for responding; I'm glad to see that someone else is fascinated by this story that may be of help to unravel the mystery. The cemetery records of Jemima call her Jemima Briggs Reynolds, as do other Calkins family trees I have drawn on.
This is all quite interesting. I would love to see copies of these original articles as I have never heard this story. Was the child named Jemima Barber? The only other remote possibility that I can think of is the family of Robert's brother Amos. He and his wife Sarah lived in the area for a time (or at least he is listed as a customer at Robert's store) before relocating to Parishville in St. Lawrence Co. I am not sure when this happened as I can not find him in either the 1810 or 1820 census. In 1800 he was in Easton in Washington Co. and by 1830 he was in Parishville. He had a daughter Laura who was born 1790-1800 which puts her in the realm of the right age. She married Hiram Ormsby in 1829 and later moved to Michigan. I have never seen the Quaker records for the area which might give you direction as the Battey's were Quaker and when another member of the family had a dalliance with the maid while his wife was out on a Quaker speaking tour the entire episode was recorded in his local meeting minutes!!! I don't believe these records have been published (as many have) and may no longer even exist but you could try writing to New York Yearly Meeting on Rutherford Place in Manhattan where last I knew all the records were stored.

The original newspaper articles only said that the girl was "a member of the Battey family" and I have always assumed it was a cousin or niece of someone in the family. I think it may have been a cousin on Jemima Briggs' side of the family. By the next census, even though individual names were not listed, it is clear that mother and child were no longer in the family, even though the news article, which was written for a centennial celebration of the area, says that the Barber family took care of the child, I believe the mother married and the child was adopted, but I agree that it was not Robert Battey's daughter. The baby's birth and Jemima's death happened in the same year, but I do not know the sequence of events. The baby was either named after her in honor of her passing, or as a tribute to the connection of the child's mother to the Briggs family.

I'm not sure how this would have been possible. Robert Battey's eldest daughter, Katharine, was born in 1799, which means she would have been 12 at the time. Not impossible but not so likely. She married in 1821 and did name her first daughter Susan Jemima after her mother and step-mother.

I am working on verifying this family for a friend who is trying to get a Florida Pioneer certificate.
It is so frustrating because of all the erroneous information on the Internet taken from the incorrect data supplied by Gene Barber. While he freely admitted putting out a great deal of incorrect information this does not help get it off family trees and message board postings.

I have found NOTHING to tie Champion to dying in Florida during and Indian Raid or any of the other stories floating about.
Many people were previously assumed dead just because they were not found on the census of the next decade.

I do not believe Susan Barber, wife of William, died November 15, 1850. That is the exact date the 1850 census was taken at her home in Columbia county, Florida while living next door to Moses.
While it IS possible I personally find it highly unlikely. I think someone might have misread or incorrectly transcribed some notes and got the date in error.

I hope to be able to find more data on a trip to the libraries at UF. I'll let you know what I find.

Are you in Florida near any possible sites of research?
More attacks at Garey's Ferry and Black Creek; Mr. Thigpen and Barber killed. "

I have seen several references in barber notes about William's death being in the newspaper but this is the first one for which I actually found a correct source.
HOPEFULLY this will lead to other proof of William's residency.

BTW, we are trying to track this line through Rhoda who married Daniel Clifton.

Charles Eugene - Barber

Just ran across this while searching and thought it might benefit someone in their research. I have no connection to these people.

Berrien County Probate Court
“Minors and Mentals” Estate Files

What the county Probate Court office referred to as “Minors and Mentals” files pertained to the estates of
minor children (under 21 years of age) and individuals judged mentally incompetent to manage their own affairs.
Most cases of minor children involved a situation where the children inherited property or money from a
deceased parent or relative. As minors, they were not legally able to manage their estate and had to have a court-
appointed guardian to handle it for them. Likewise, adults judged mentally incompetent needed a court-appointed
guardian to manage their affairs.
These files include an estate inventory, information on the guardian’s appointment. Children’s files usually
include the birthdates of the children (especially important for those born prior to the origination of Michigan birth
records in 1867), information about parents and sometimes the childrens’ extended families.

Name Parents Guardian Date File No.

Barber, Charles Eugene - Barber, Darius J. & Rhuhana Berrien Co.
Andrew Jackson Barber

I have a question for those coming from the Andrew Jackson Barber line. The LDS has placed online information from Florida death certificates from 1877-1939. In that listing I found the following:

Florida death certificate info from LDS

Name: Andrew Jackson Barber

Death date: 18 Aug 1916
Death place: Orlando, Orange, Fla.
Gender: Male
Race or color (on document): w
Race or color (expanded): White
Age at death: 77y 1m 9d
Birthdate: 09 Jul 1839
Birthplace: North Part Of Fla.
Marital status: Married
Spouse's name:
Father's name: Wm. Barber
Father's birthplace: Ga.
Mother's name: M. Davis
Mother's birthplace: Ga.
Occupation: Retired
Cemetery name: Greenwood
Burial place: Orlando, Orange, Fla.
Burial date: 19 Aug 1916
Funeral home:
Informant's name:
Additional relatives: X
Film number: 2116816
Reference number: 5316
Collection: Florida Deaths, 1877-1939

Does anyone have any other data that supports the M Davis as the mother?
I know many death certificates contain erroneous information and this couod possibly be one of those *little* mistakes.

Any ideas?

William W. Barber resources

I am beginning a new thread to keep things a little orderly. this relates to a conversation started about Francis Champion Barber.
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?o=0&=1807.1.2.1.1...

In order to obtain a Florida Pioneer certificate one needs to establish William Barber's residency.
He is listed in the 1840 Nassau county Florida census.
He dies in 1841 so therefore is not listed in the 1850 census with his widow Susan and his children.
To add to the fire is the fact there are two William Barbers in the 1840 census in Florida. The GASDEN county

William Barber is well documented and we can prove they are two different men/families by tracking them in the

following census years.

Now we not only have to prove his residency we have to prove his relationship to Susan.
To this date I can find no marriage record for them.
other than some unsourced (other than Gene Barber)family trees online stating Susan's maiden name was CHAMPION I

have no idea what her maiden name was.
The 1850 Columbia county, Florida census shows Susan and their children living next door to William's brother,

Moses Barber. The 1850 census does not list relationships so we also need to prove the children's relationship to

Susan and William.

Now for the sources to prove these family links and his residency.

The only article I have in my possession that talks about a Barber being killed by Indians is from the Columbus

Georgia Enquirer. They got their information from the Savannah Republican of which I do NOT have a copy.
I am attaching that article to this post.
If you are reading through the mailing list you will nned to check out the message board to be able to see the

article.
In Gene Barber's notes he says he gt the info from the new York Herald but I have yet to be able to find a copy of
it. Even in his transcription of that article it does not state Barber's first name.
The special Collections DEPT of the University of Florida has an article with what sounds like the same
information. I do not have a copy of that article yet.

10/11/1841 Daily National Intelligencer 3:3 "Late From Florida. Various letters. More attacks at

Garey's Ferry and Black Creek; Mr. Thigpen and Barber killed. Boiler of U.S.S. Beaufort blows up during trip on St.

Johns River, injuring and killing crew. "

My reasoning for connecting these articles to William Barber, husband of Susan, is the fact Thigpen and Barber
lived in close proximity to each other and in the Macedonia cemetary book of Baker county it lists Jonathon Thigpen
and William Barber as 2 of the 4 first burials in that cemetery both dying in 1842 in Indian Raids. I have those
copies if anyone needs them.

William and Moses served in the Seminole Wars in William Haddocks company twice in 1837.
This shows William was in Florida before 1845.
The 1840 Nassau county census shows he was in Florida before 1845.

To prove the relationship of the children listed in 1850 we try to death records.

So far I only have a newspaper article when Andrew Jackson Barber died in Orange County. The pertinent part states:
"“One of the brave Indian fighters and pioneers and the subject of this biographical sketch was Mr. Andrew J. Barber, son of William Barber, and who was born in North Florida, July 9th, 1839.
His father died when Andrew was but two years old. Sixteen years of his life was passed in Nassau, Hernando, and Columbia Counties."

The LDS has placed online information from Florida death certificates from 1877-1939. In that listing I found the following:

Florida death certificate info from LDS

Name: Andrew Jackson Barber

Death date: 18 Aug 1916
Death place: Orlando, Orange, Fla.
Gender: Male
Race or color (on document): w
Race or color (expanded): White
Age at death: 77y 1m 9d
Birthdate: 09 Jul 1839
Birthplace: North Part Of Fla.
Marital status: Married
Spouse's name:
Father's name: Wm. Barber
Father's birthplace: Ga.
Mother's name: M. Davis
Mother's birthplace: Ga.
Occupation: Retired
Cemetery name: Greenwood
Burial place: Orlando, Orange, Fla.
Burial date: 19 Aug 1916
Funeral home:
Informant's name:
Additional relatives: X
Film number: 2116816
Reference number: 5316
Collection: Florida Deaths, 1877-1939

While death certificates are not primary sources we still glean information from them.
The data matches as far as william being the father is concerned. What bothers me is the mother's name: "M. Davis"

I'll add more later as I can.
Any sourced information anyone has to contribute is greatly appreciated.

The article was in a northern newspaper. Until hurricane Ivan hit the gulf coast I had a copy. You might check Gene Barber's articles - he may have mentioned it.

I have in my possession and old fashioned card from a funeral in the 188."s. she died in Mar 31 1887 and was 25y 6m old.
This card was in the possession of my grandmother who died some 60 years ago. Today the cards are much smaller.
We live in Mt Holly, NJ so the funeral would be in this general area.
Anyone doing family research on this branch might want this card. Let me know.
Regards
