Connie Marie:

The Bellevue Plantation was downriver from New Orleans, in Plaquemines Parish, on the right hand side of the river as you descend the river towards the Gulf. I've seen maps and aerial photos of the land. It was right across the river from a small "town" or rather community named "Bellevue." You can use the internet to search for Bellevue, Plaquemines Parish, and you'll probably find it. It is believed that Prosper Casimir Barbin, whose parents died when he was a small child, was raised first by his maternal grandfather, Pierre Voisin. And then when he died, he was taken in by one of his father's friends who owned the Bellevue Plantation. In later years, when that man died, he left the Plantation to Prosper, who later, along with his wife, were known around New Orleans as "The De Bellevues."

The Barbin Family of Marksville

Hello Connie Barbin !!!

Your great-grandfather (Adelma Benoit Barbin - born August 11, 1862) and my grandmother (Louise Esma Barbin Chaudoir - born November 1, 1870) were brother and sister. My grandmother married Edward Florian Chaudoir (born May 24, 1872) also of Marksville. Both of my grandparents (Barbin/Chaudoir) died before I was born.

My grandparents moved to Alexandria; however, both are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Marksville.

I would like to contact you so we can share more information on the Barbin Family History. Most of what you have posted agrees with information that I have. Thanks for you help!

Linda Chaudoir Gauthier

Dear Bettye---Actually, I have heard of 2 duels involving Barbins, and have a copy of an old newspaper article written about one of them. I have spent the last 15 minutes looking for it, to no avail. Apparently it is deeper in the black hole (AKA my genealogy files) than I thought, so I will continue to search and will try to get back to you with it. The other incident was mentioned to me by another Ancestry.com contact; she was trying to find out about a duel that one of her relatives (or her husband's relatives) had had with a Barbin. In the first one, the Barbin walked away uninjured, but in this other one, the Barbin wasn't so lucky, it seems! I will try not to let too much time go by before replying.

Sincerely,
Georgia

Sandra---My husband's grandfather was Solon Loth Barbin, the brother of Adelma Benoit Barbin. According to the information contained in "The Barbin Family of Louisiana, Ancestry and Descendants" by Maner L. Thorpe, a copy of which is available in the Avoyelles Parish Library in Marksville, Adelma was the 6th child of Francois Bellevue Barbin and his wife, Lezida Juneau Barbin. Their children are as follows: Louis James, Helene, Flora, Arthur, Norma, Adelma, Rosa, Louise, Alfred, and Solon.
Apparently, Adelma had 2 wives by whom he had 13 children. Morris was one of his sons by his 2nd wife, Adele Frank. For more information, you can write to Maner Thorpe at the following address: 181 Santo Tomas Ln., Santa Barbara, CA 93108-2525. He is very interested in hearing from any Barbin descendant who can help him fill in information pertaining to the earlier generations, and he will share whatever information he has. I think he has had his daughter post a message on the board inviting others to contact him through her.
My husband is doing some research on his grandfather's line, and we have been to Marksville twice; we are also making trips to Beaumont gathering birth/death records. If you wish to contact us again, please do so. We live in
Galveston, TX.
Sincerely, Georgia and Oscar Barbin

Probably the Barbins in Marksville, of which there seem to be many, would know. I am in New York and have never been to Marksville but someday I hope to visit as my family is from there too. Good luck.
