Seeking information on Thomas M. Barbour (b. abt. 1830) who resided in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in the mid-1800s.

I find him enumerated in Tuscaloosa County in 1860 as Thos. M. BARBER, with wife Caroline F. (b. abt 1831 AL), and children T.E. (male, b. abt 1853 AL), Emma I. (b. abt 1855, AL) and Horace (b. 1859 AL).

In 1870, the only member of the family I can locate is daughter Emma, who was a scholar at Alabama Central Female College in the city of Tuscaloosa. She married Andrew Malone HILL three years later, and they migrated to Texas. Emma named her first son Thomas, her second daughter Carrie, and one of her younger sons Horace Barbour HILL.

Would appreciate any info on Thomas, or his wife Caroline.

Thank you!

Re: Dora Barbour

Thanks so much for the quick reply. We have located a number of our ancestors, William Taylor and family, who were apparently connected to Dr. R. N. Barbour as possibly slaves, tenant farmers or sharecroppers. They appear with Dr. Barbour in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, but the exact nature and evolution of their connection to Dr. Barbour is a little unclear. The Taylor's appear to be slaves owned by Dr. Barbour at one point, free later, then show up again as slaves. We are hoping that learning more about Dr. Barbour might give us some insight and more clues as to the jurney of the Taylors through time, their status and their relationship to Dr. Barbour. A number of Taylors later turned up in the late 1800's in Dayton, Ohio, where Hettie Taylor married Clark McClung. My wife is a McClung.

Again, we greatly appreciate any info you might have about Dr. Barbour. This appears to have the makings of a fascinating story.

My email is dtracy@insight.rr.com.

Doug Tracy and Debbie (McClung) Tracy
3993 Prince George Lane
New Albany, Ohio 43054
614-855-9789

My Grandfather's name was Harry Barbour - his wife Dora
My father was born in 1901 -possibly Va, worked in the coal mine at one time. He did have a brother, I think his name might have been Don. He always said that his Grandmother and an old maid aunt raised him. I do not have much to go on. Thought that the name was unusual enough that I could find a link
Thank you,

What state was your grandfather born in? The Barbour branch of my family were originally from VA and moved into KY between 1797 and 1799. I would be happy to provide what information I have should there be a link. My g-g-grandfather was the youngest in his family. He had 7 brothers and 4 sisters. There could be a link through one of his brothers. The Medora I mentioned previously was my great grandmother's sister.

I have a Medora Barbour(aka Dora)in my family tree, married to John P. Winchester. But she was born in 1845 and died in 1879, so I suspect that is too far back to be your grandmother. Interesting though as Dora is not as common a name as say Mary.

HI Di
Yes, in Australia.
The Staader I referred to is Louisa Staader daughter of Louis and Elizabeth Staader who arrived in Australia in 1849 on ship Parland. They came from Hocheim auf Main in Germany. They went to Port Macquarie and were involved in the wine industry there. Louis and Elizabeth had about 10 children - names I remember are Augustus, Paulina, Rosa..
Joy

Di
I believe Alice Elsie Barbour (Whitaker/Whittaker) was my father's half sister. She was born in England to Joseph Whitaker and Alice Louisa Harper and was the 3rd of three children of this marriage. Joseph came to Australia with his other 2 children. Joseph remarried in Australia in 1898 to Louisa Staader. They had two children - one being my father.
I think I have the right connection with this. I have only just learned about Alice being in Australia.
I recently made a trip to Meade co. Ky to do some research on my husbands family of Bryant and ran across a deed of sorts for a James Barbour and his wife Lucy and Daniel Bryant and his wife Mary. it concerns an original land grant made to Richard Barbour in Hardin co. from which Meade co was taken from to form. the date is 1794. If anyone would like a copy of this paper email me at schappell@indy.rr.com
Sue

Does anyone know of a James and Lucy Barbour who was in Meade co Ky in 1846 where they were involved in a land deal with a Daniel and Mary Bryant. Trying to find out who the Daniel and Mary Bryant are and where they went after this. It has something to do with some land Patented to one Richard Barbour in 1831 i think. Something about a suit filed against one Christy Wilson against the land in 1836.
Who were they are where did they all go.

Thanks Sue

Charlene,
I just spent a few weeks in the Scottish highlands. Part of the trip was to discover Clan relationships to BARBOUR. In the archives of the First and Second World War in Edinburgh Castle (War Museum), I discovered BARBOURs fighting under GORDON and BLACK WATCH. The BARBOURs listed were Highlanders from the area around Aberdeenshire.

Also, if you look at the Tartans that are used by the BARBOUR line of clothing, the internal tartans are DRESS GORDON, GORDON WEATHERED and ANCIENT GORDON. Go to www.clangordonhighlanders.org/tartans for samples of tartans.
