Surnames: BEARD, BARD, BAIRD
My branch of the Bard family is searching for any information on the ancestors of Archibald BEARD (later Bard) who came over to America about 1740 from County Antrim, Ireland to Delaware, then soon moved to York County (now Adams County) Pennsylvania, and then settled in Franklin County Pennsylvania where this Bard family lived for several generations.

Archibald's father‘s name was David BEARD, and Archibald's grandfather‘s name was William BEARD, both of whom presumably lived in Ireland.

Archibald had three sons: Richard Bard, William Bard, and David Bard. Many of their descendants are well doucumented in a book titled: The Bard Family by G. O. Seilhamer (1908).

DNA research now (2007) shows matches to the BAIRD family as well, presumably through old world connections.

Richard Bard (mentioned above) and his wife Catharine Poe Bard were captured by Delaware Indians in 1758 and their infant son John Bard was brutally killed. Richard escaped and later ransomed his wife to freedom.

If you know which ship Archibald BEARD (Bard), his son Richard Bard & Richard's wife Catharine Poe Bard came over on, please reply and let us know.

If you can trace your lineage to any of these early pioneers, and/or if you want more information about the Bard Family book (now available inexpensively on CD-ROM), or if you want more info on our Bard Mailing List, or you want more info on our Bard surname FamilyTreeDNA Y study, or Bard Web site (www.surf.to/BARD), or our Bard query page, please reply.

My closest tie-in in the Bard Book is with Thomas Henderson Bard b.11FEB1882 m. Susan Phillips DYSART b.2DEC1886, mentioned on page 248.

My descendant line is:

William BEARD (Ireland)

The Bard Book by G. O. Seilhamer was commissioned by Sen. Thomas Robert Bard.
