Re: Rishpia Miller Bardwell Belding

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Since I posted this query several months ago I have found a lot more information on Risphia Miller. To clarify my original post, I was not trying to trace the Bardwell line...I have read the Descendants of Robert Bardwell and James Crafts' History of Whatley and have my Bardwell line confidently back to Robert. None of those sources, however, say anything more about Risphia Miller other than her name and date of birth (which is wrong in Crafts' book). For completeness, here is what I know:

George W. Bardwell, son of William and Hannah (Davis) was born on 22 Sept 1832 in Whatley, MA. He married Risphia Miller on 6 Sep 1853 in Hopkinton, MA. He died from wounds sustained at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on 10 May 1864.

I wrote to the National Archives in Washington, DC and from Risphia's Civil War Pension file was able to find her death date and location (26 Dec 1903 in Belchertown, MA). From that, I was able to find her death certificate and answer a lot of the questions. I now know that she was born on 22 Jun 1829 in Bangor, ME. Her parents were Jude Miller and Lydia Frazier. Before she married George she was married to a man named Drouer and had 1 child. After George died, she married Willard Belding. She is buried in Rural Cemetery in Belchertown, MA along with her 3rd husband Willard M. Belding and her unmarried son from that marriage, Willard H.V. Belding. My mother has been to the cemetery and photographed the stone.

Now I'm looking for information on Jude and Lydia (Frazier) Miller. A Jude Miller shows up in the 1830 census in Hermon, ME, but that's all I've found so far.

Thanks,
Ed

Rishpia Miller Bardwell Belding

I'm looking for birth/marriage/death information for Risphia Miller. I have a lot of (sometimes conflicting) information on her life, but have not been able to find specific birth, parents or death information. Here is a synopsis of what I know...any further info would be most appreciated.

Risphia Miller born 22 Jul 1825 m. George W. Bardwell 6 Sep 1853. He was killed at Wilderness in the Civil War, she then married W. H. "Belden". This is all from Crafts "History of the town of Whatley Mass" p.381

From 1860 census her first name is "Sophia" and she was age 30, making her birthdate abt 1829/1830

From 1870 census her name is now "Bisphinde Belding", birth date about 1830

From 1880 census her name is again "Risphia A. Belding".

From 1900 census she is now a widow, still living in Belchertown, MA (since 1870). Name is now "Rispha A. Belding"

And one more name for fun :), from George W. Bardwell's Civil War Pension, her name is listed as "Alephia A. Bardwell". Her guardian is listed as "Willard H. Belding".

One thing that seems consistent is that she was born in Maine.

This trail is consistent with what we know about her despite the many first names. My mother has searched cemetaries in the Belchertown area but has not found her grave. She does not appear in the 1910 census, so likely died prior to then. We have been unable to locate a city/town of birth or residence in Maine, parents names, record of either marriage (other than the Crafts book), or death information.

We are descended from her oldest son George W., who married Mary Dwyer (Dyer?) in New Britain, CT and appears there in the 1880 census.

Any help appreciated.

Ed

JOHN LOMBARD BARDWELL. MA>CA. 9/27/1830- ?

JOHN LOMBARD BARDWELL

JOHN LOMBARD BARDWELL came to San Francisco in 1852, and has passed through the exciting scenes in the early history of the city. He was born in South Hadley Falls, Massachusetts, September 27, 1830, and is the son of Josiah and Maria (Lombard) Bardwell, also natives of Massachusetts. The maternal grandfather was Justin Lombard of Springfield, Massachusetts, and his family was one of the best known in that commonwealth.

The subject of this notice started for California in 1852, sailing on the ship Staffordshire from Boston. He was 101 days on the Passage, and arrived in San Francisco August 10, 1852. The first six months he spent in the employ of J. P. Haven as a clerk, and in connection with his brother Josiah in Boston also began the importation of drills and sheeting, and so he has the credit of being the Pioneer bag man of the State. Later he embarked in the wholesale produce business, and was the first shipper of California wheat to the East, per ship Adelaide in 1855. Although the margin was not very great, he still made some money in this operation. In the outbreaks of 1856, when it became necessary for all law abiding citizens to rally to the support of the city government, he joined the Vigilance Committee, and did some very effective work in the capacity of No. 192. He abandoned his private interests, and participated in the execution of Casey and Cora, and was also connected with several other noted cases.

Mr. Bardwell continued his business with uninterrupted success until the panic of 1875, when he met with reverses over which he had no control. Since that time he has been a salesman in the large establishment of Newville & Co., to whose patronage he has brought many old friends and business acquaintances. He is a man of refined, cultivated tastes, and in his prosperous days was a generous patron of the fine arts; he had at one time a fine collection of paintings, which he sold to meet an obligation. He now owns a valuable collection of Japanese ivory carvings, which is the finest on the coast. He also has in his possession some relics of historic interest; one that is now owned by the Pioneer Society, a gift from Mr. Bardwell, is the “All seeing eye,” that ornamented the rooms of the Vigilance Committee; it was authenticated by No. 33, Secretary Isaac Bluxom, and is one of the most interesting relics exhibited by the society.

Mr. Bardwell is unmarried. Politically he is identified with the Republican party. He has always taken a deep interest in the prosperity and growth of San Francisco, and has had the gratification of seeing it become one of the greatest metropolises of the earth.

In 1873 he presented to the Medical Department of the University of California a valuable original painting (portrait) of Gabriel Fallopio, by Tintoretto. The picture has for some time past been on exhibition at the art Union Association’s rooms, and is considered by connoisseurs an exquisite work of art; being an original, the inference is that it is a likeness, and as such will doubtless be highly esteemed by the Regents and Faculty, not only an acquisition to its museum, but as an indication of the interest amongst our citizens in the welfare of our great central institution, the State University.

Source: "The Bay of San Francisco," Vol. 2, Page 516, Lewis Publishing Co, 1892.

This is the same family as I have been researching. When I get a chance I will send a copy of what I have so far. He was born in Remsen NY (very near to Barneveld), is a son of Elias or Consider Bardwell. Elias is my direct ancestor and therefore we must be related in some way .Much information is on the Family History portion at Ancestry.com the family name for the research is BardwellBordwell and descendant's(my spelling is atrocious
Peg Allen
mallen3358@aol.com

On Ancestry.Com I found in the library a family history, called "BARDWELLBORDWELL Decendants,1478."
I have started with my grandmother born: Margaret Elizabeth Bardwell in Ohio City< NY in 1880. She is buried in a cemetery in Prospect NY as is her birth family, Adelbert and Ann Bardwell. So I have been tracing from there back to the original Bardwell from Massachusetts. I guess what I'm trying to say is to start from the above publication..I know from my reading that some of the descendents went to the South, some to Canada, California and Iowa, Kansas, and Wisconsin. So good luck with your project.
Peg Allen

Hi, Peg:
Thank you for answering my post. At the time I posted my message, I hadn't found the cemetery that Charlotte Bardwell was buried in but I found her grave with her first husband, Simon Z. Dickinson in St. Ann's Cemetery in Hinckley, NY (near Barneveld). I have no other connection to David Bardwell but was searching for info on Charlotte and Simon, as their daughter, Agnes is my great grandmother. Agnes and John Mykel (my grandmother's parents) are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Barneveld. Do you have any information on Agnes' sisters? Nellie was a Dickinson but Susie was David and Charlotte's daughter. Susie would be indirectly related to me (blood-wise) because her mother was my great great grandmother. Any info is appreciated.
Have a Great Weekend,
Carol

Thanks for your reply.

The probate records do not mention any of Solomon's children. The probate was taken out by his creditors and his estate was insufficient to cover his debts so there was no distribution. The only Bardwell mentioned other than Solomon is his widow, Sarah T. Bardwell and her relationship is not even stated just her claims on his estate.

The only absolute proofs I know of some of his children are his consents to the marriages of his daughters, Elizabeth and Susannah Bardwell, and his son, P. Bardwell (the name is often corrupted by census takers and clerks and he only signed his name as "P" that I have found but his name appears to have been Perez), and the baptismal record of his eldest son, Ezekiel John Bardwell. The other children attributed to Solomon are inferred from their approximate birth years, birth places (Arkansas or Mississippi) and interaction with other proven children of Solomon.

Robert G. Bardwell was young enough to be a son of Solomon or Ezekiel Bardwell. However, due to his close relationship with Solomon's widow (she took in some of his children after his first wife died), the naming of a child as Sarah T. Bardwell (which was the first name and middle initial of Solomon's widow), and that he remained in Lawrence County, Mississippi, while Ezekiel's children dispursed to other parts of Missisissippi it has been assumed by me and some others that he was Solomon's son.

I purchased my copy of the Bardwell Book some years ago from Higginson Book Company of Salem, Massachusetts. I believe they have an internet site but I have not visited in years.

Let me know if there is any other information you require.

John Caskey

I ,too, am searching for some of the Bardwell family, and you seem to be the most recent searcher of the same. My grandmother was born Margaret Elizabeth Bardwell in what was then called Ohio City, now is probably called Remsen NY in 1880. Her father was Adelbert Bardwell; his father was Elias Bardwell who was born in Conneticutt in 1821. Is any one else doing geneology following this line? If so let me know-please.
Hi Eliane. how great to hear from you. I think that you mean Matthew Alfred Bardwell. Does it say Matthew Richard on her marriage cert? The Matthew that you mention with Emma is Matthew Alfred Bardwell. Eliza Harrison was part of Emmas family. Her maiden name was Harrison. Matthew Alfred & Emma did have a daughter named Alice Elizabeth Bardwell. My e-mail address is ifm@whidbey.net, I look forward to hearing from you.
Debbie

I am trying to prove that Perez Bardwell from Whately Mass was the son of Silas Bardwell from the Rev. War. I am trying to help a member get into DAR on this line. Her aunt is already in but they will not take the proof that we have on Silas and Perez.
David Bardwell on 1820 census for Bradford County, PA. (who is he?)

I am still trying to find parents/relatives of the Jane Bardwell who md.,as his second wife, Alanson Fuller of Springfield Twp., Bradford, PA. I have no clues as to who I should look for or where. On the 1820 census for Springfield, Bradford, PA, page 101A is a David Bardwell whose family consists of: 1 M under 10; 1 M 10-16 and one M 45+. Females: 1 Under 10; 2 F 10-16; 1 F 16-26; 1 F 16-45 and 1 F 45+. Quite some time ago I eliminated the families connected to any Robert Bardwell with a wife Lydia; ditto on a Silas Bardwell. Who does that leave?

FULLER – BARDWELL REUNIONS.

FULLER – BARDWELL REUNIONS.

What can someone tell me abut the Fuller-Bardwell Family reunions that used to be held (are being held?). I first heard about them, 4 years ago, from another descendant of Alanson Fuller and 2nd wife Jane Bardwell; her great uncle, who has a Fuller Bible that has not been shared, mentioned these reunions to her many years ago. Today I was searching Joyce Tice’s web-site, as I often do, searching for new/additional tid-bits on either my Fuller families or something that might finally tell me who the parents of his 2nd wife, Jane Bardwell, were. Not only am I still searching for them, but I am also still trying to decide if she was or was not the mother of my Lydia born ca 1832 who md. Thomas H. Ames. Joyce has begun to type up the family reunions and there is one dated from the Troy Gazette-Register dated Friday Sept 5, 1913 which tells about the 6th Fuller-Bardwell reunion that had been held on 20th August. I recognize most of the (male) Fuller names as being connected to my Alanson but cannot really connect any of the females. Were they Bardwell? What Bardwell family was it that was part of these Fuller-Bardwell reunions; how long did they go on; when was the last one or are they still being held? At the 6th reunion there were 31 in attendance. Maybe someone reading this has been to a reunion or has clippings of same or have been told about them by someone ? I have been stuck in a rut for so many years, trying to solve the Fuller and Bardwell lines – running out of options/clues to try.
Bardwell Photos: Grover Hill Cem., Bradford Co., PA

I have decided it is time to clear out the holding file I have had for several years with misc. Fuller and Bardwell information in it, waiting for the day I can finally solve my family lines of Fuller and Bardwell. I feel now it will not happen after spending so many years searching, but if it does - anything I need should be easy to find. I have photos of the tombstones of Lydia Bardwell, w/o Robert and of James R. their son that were sent to me when someone took photos of Fullers for me, in Grover Hill Cemetery,Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA. I would like to send them to someone who can relate to this Bardwell family of Robert, Lydia and James R.;even though I cannot find parents of Lydia Bardwell who md. as his second wife, Alanson Fuller, I feel sure, from researching, that this is not the family of (my) Lydia Bardwell. There are 6 photos. You can contact me off site if you wish, to give me your snail mail address.
( grannygoose3@mchsi.com )

Robert, Lydia and James R. Bardwell Photos: Will send

In cleaning out my pending FULLER folder, I have come across photos of the graves of Robert, Lydia and James R., BARDWELL, in Grover Hill Cemetery, taken for me some years ago. Since that time I have not found a connection from this family to the Jane Bardwell who seems to have been a second wife to my Alanson FULLER of MA., NY, and finally Bradford County, PA. If there is a connection, I certainly have not found it and it has not been for lack of trying for so many years….

I would like to send photos these to anyone who can use them – they are color, and in great shape, having been in a folder and kept out of the light.

Send me an e-mail and I will gladly send them to you.

In looking at the cemetery inscriptions now on the Tri-Counties site, it appears that the stone for Robert is missing or is unreadable – fortunately, I have the information here….It looks like the stone had been repaired at the time, so guess it is now gone forever???
