Jacob Ernst August Bargstedt

I am the great grandson of Jacob Ernst August Bargstedt ( 1874-1918 ) Jacob was the son of Emile Bargstedt, a Dairyman, of Wiesbaden, Germany. Jacob emigrated to London in the early 1890's and married Catharina Gertrude Dittert ( 1875-1957 )daughter of Christian Friedrich Dittert ( 1833-1895 ) and Julia Sauer ( 1852-1885 )

Jacob Bargstedt was a master hairdresser and wigmaker by trade.His family in Germany had been in farming and as far as we know he had one brother and one sister. His brother Philip Bargstedt was an Actor and he married a French woman called Lydie.The last known record of Philip Bargstedt is an entry at Ellis Island in 1911 showing them as en route to Cuba. The story in the family is that he ended up in Australia. The only information we have on Jacob's sister is that she remained in Germany and had two sons who fought in the First World War.

Jacob was interned in England during the First World War because he was German born. He died of cancer in 1918 and is buried in Hampstead, London. His son in the meantime had been conscripted into the British Army.
