Alice Paton Baring

Is anybody aware of Alice Paton Baring?

Alice was the first wife of Joseph Thomas Chapman (1860-1927), probably married just before the birth of their first child, Ernest William Chapman (1885-) in Folkestone, Kent. Six other children followed.

Melrose T Chapman DSO (1887-1947) - Ipswich
Winnifred B Chapman (1890-1964) - Agra, India
Percival George Chapman (1893-1964) - Lucknow, India
Sidney Tyrol Chapman (1896-1957) - Chatham, Kent
Reginald John Chapman (1899-1985) - Gravesend, Kent
Effie Josephine Chapman (1901-1934) - Cork, Ireland

JT Chapman was in the Royal Artillery and had many and various posting hence differing birth locations.

It it possible that she died fairly young because I have a 1911 census document which list four of these children living with Joseph Thomas and his second wife, Annie, married 1903.

At present I am unable to find any information regarding Alice, and would be grateful for some assistance.

Hi Nigel, thanks for the email. Yes this is very interesting to me. I have traced my family back to Frederick Baring (and Son - Charles Ebenhard) both born in Germany. I am trying to find out where in Germany they came from. I suspect Prussia but I cant validate this. There was a mass migration of Germans to South Australia in the 1840's. (escaping persecution)... Frederick is the first born name handed down. There have been 4 generations of Frederick Baring's here in Australia. I am researching their entry point into Australia and when Frederick arrived. I am drawing too many blanks I am afraid...curiously however..most of the children her in Australia are Charles, Frederick, Rebecca, Hannah..all of the English names..not the German...I apologise for being so long winded here. I am just very happy you have responded. Kind regards Scott

Hello Nigel. My name is Scott Mitchell (Baring) from Australia. I am researching the family back from Australia to Germany. I would really appreciate a copy of the family tree. As you can imiagine I have a lot of gaps in our family tree, but we are from the German Baring's so hopefully your work can shed some light on my research. Thanks in advance

According to the several accounts of the Baring family tree in my possession, Dudley William Baring was born in 1892 and married Cecilia Mary Buchanan on Apr. 10, 1919. He had 3 children, Francis William, Michael John, and David Stuart. His father was Francis Charles Baring (born 1852, died 1926). According to the accounts I have, Dudley was the third child of Francis Charles Baring. The first two children were Thomas Esme and Arthur Francis Charles. The fourth child was Violet Nina. I hope that helps.

I also have a record of the Baring family tree dating back to Petrus Baring in the late 1400s following all the descendents of the sons. Part of this family emigrated from Germany to England in the 1700s and founded the Baring Brothers bank. I don't find any records that would match yours either, unless you descended from one of the female Barings.

Thanks for the reply, I am sure about the dates as I have a Marriage Cert for Joseph Barring (son of James), he married Esther Cornwall Kelvedon Essex on 26-10-1844,he was at this time a Widower his age was 25, . that confirms his birth at around 1819. An Aunt also informed me that he caused a scandal with the family at the time by becoming a Jew.
Also I could not find how to open the attachment for the family tree.

Steve Sharp

Hi Doreen

I'm Emma, your cousin Peter Tinning's daughter. I've been tracing the family history too and have also been looking into the Bullmores who I know quite a bit about as I went down to Falmouth and found the family homes, graves etc in July 2003.

I will ask Mum and Dad to send you all the info we have to see if any of it is additional to what you know. However, we are still finding it quite tricky to get concrete evidence on the Richards side!

Emma

A drawing of Lydia Baring by Sir Thomas Lawrence

I inherited, some years ago, a drawing of 'Lydia Baring the evening before her wedding' by Sir Thomas Lawrence. I would be interested to know how this came into our family's possession. One possibility might be that an ancestor was Charles Douglas Halford - also a banker - who married Emma Matilda Sumner on 1st September 1875.
Marilyn

I have the family tree dating back to Peter Behring circa 1483 up to the current family for the English branch of the family. The German branch gives details up to the late 18th century but I would like to add to this.

Johann Behring shanged his name to Baring when he came to England in 1728.

If all this is of interest to you then please contact me.

Nigel James Baring Colledge

Hello Nigel,
I'm not sure that I'm on the right track, but I am doing research for the American branch of the Baring family that is related the Earl of Cromer. Is this part of your family tree? If so, please let me know how I can obtain a copy of your Baring Family Tree.
Much obliged,
Cecelia

I am trying to trace Mary Bullmore (Ballmore) born in Truro 1831. She married a Baring and had two children
George born 1859 Chelsea and Harold C born 1857 in Somerset . Do any of these names appear on your family tree? She married Charles P Richards in London 1860
so I assume he died between 1858 - 60.
I am also looking for information on the Baring family. I am a novice at this, unlike you. My great-grandfather was Louis Baring, who was married to Emelie Baring (Seiper). Emelie Sieper's parents were Johanna Fredericha Wilhelmina Ernst and John G. Sieper, both born in Germany. I know nothing on the Baring side beyond my great-grandfather. If you have any suggestions for me I would appreciate it. Ben Baring

MISSING RELATIVES/ALIVE OR DECEASED

I AM LOOKING FOR ANY DECENDANTS OF SIMON AND MARGARETA BARING, BORN IN WELCHBELLIG, GERMANY [NEAR TRIER] IN 1818 AND 1819. THEY HAD FOUR CHILDREN, STEPHAN, NIKOLAS, JOHN [JOHAN] AND GERTRUDE. THEY PROBABLY IMMIGRATED TO CHICAGO, ILLINOIS AROUND 1864. MY BRANCH OF THE FAMILY IS ALMOST DECEASED. IN PARTICULAR I WOULD LIKE TO LOCATE ANYONE RELATED TO NIKOLAS BARING -- THAT BRANCH SEEMS TO HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM THE EARTH. WE STILL HAVE LESS THAN 20 RELATIVES IN GERMANY, STILL ALIVE. I HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON OUR BRANCH OF THE FAMILY, AND HAVE BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND OTHER SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS --THE FAMILY WAS KNOWN AT ONE TIME TO BE THE LUXEMBOURG BRANCH, AND DID GO BY THE NAME OF "VON BARRING" TITLE GIVEN TO AN ANCESTOR IN THE VERY EARLY 18TH CENTURY. THE SPELLING OF THE NAME IS CORRECT WITH ONE R OR TWO R'S. THE MODERN FORM OF THE NAME IS BARING. I WOULD LIKE TO CONNECT WITH ANYONE STILL LEFT IN THE UNITED STATES, AND COMPARE NOTES. ALL RESPONSES WILL BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL. THANK YOU, WALTER S. BARING.
