Dear Interested Barkemas,

My name is Murray Richard Barkema originally from Jewell, Iowa. You are right that a clan of Barkema's live (lived) in Jewell, Iowa. Hennsmann Barkema immigrated from Bundeshee, East Friesland, Germany in 1877. I have been there and found many church records. There are still Barkemas living in Leer, Germany in Ostfriesland. The Barkemas became huge farmers in the Jewell, Iowa area. I now live in Vienna, Austria, so I have gotten back to my roots.

Best wishes,

Murray Richard Barkema

I have not found any Karstens in my family tree and don't quite know why it was posted on their board because I was mainly trying to find information on the Barkema family. The only person I have found on the TerVeen family is Tena TerVeen b:1857 d:1945 married to Gerorge Barkema b:1857
d:1932. They are both buried in Raymond, South Dakota. There children were: George, Lena, Anna, Pete, Carl, Tena.
Anna being my g-g-grandmother, she died at the age of 36. I have had a really hard time finding information on the family because I don't have a lot to go on. I keep running into dead ends, so that is why I posted a query hoping to find some one that might know more on the family than me.

Regards,
Edna

I do not know if we are related or not, there are many branches of KARSTENS families and your message is posted with the KARSTENS surnames.
How much would you like to check into the TERVEENS, I have a lot of information about them. Maybe you have all that from
Ancestry.com.
I also discovered that the TERVEENS are related to another surname I research that is a relation by marriage rather than
blood relations.

I am looking for information on George Barkema and Tena TerVeen Barkema. They were both born in Germany in 1857.
George Barkema died in South Dakota in 1932 and Tena TerVeen Barkema died in South Dakota in 1945. They are both buried in Raymond, South Dakota. I know that they were farmers and had 6 children: George, Carl, Pete, Lena, Anna, and Tena. Anna was my great great Grandma. I am wanting to find out where in Germany they came from and both family backgrounds. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
The Barkema name did come from Ostfriesland, Germany. My Grandfather and Grandmother both came to America from Ostfriesland, Germany. My Grandfather was Hauko Barkema. The Barkema family has a yearly reunion in Iowa. There is also a family tree book that is put out by this group of Barkema's. I believe there are 3 different groups of Barkema's in the states. All came from Ostfriesland, Germany area. You can read some about the Barkema family at http://genforum.genealogy.com/barkema/

Gerry

Sorry for taking so long to answer you. I have been trying to get information for you. This is what I was able to come up with. Hope this helps.

Dino

Barkema Ancestry

Here’s the lineage (using information provided by Nancy Barkema). I’m going to start with Haley Barkema, who is John Barkema’s daughter, and work back as far as possible through the fathers’ lineage with wives’ names, etc.

Haley Barkema (b. ? San Clemente, California)
/\
John Barkema (b. 1960’s Long Beach, California, m. Jennifer)
/\
Carlos Barkema (b. March 12, 1943 Lajamina, Panama, m. Haydee Meggers)
/\
Harold Wilbert Barkema (b. August 29, 1916 Alexander, Iowa, m. Celestina de Leon)
/\
Carel (Charlie) Barkema (b. July 11, 1889 Ditzumer-Verlaat, Germany, m. Jenny Gartz)
/\
Hauko Dirks Barkema (b. October 10, 1851 Ditzumer-Verlaat, Germany, m. Trientje Janssen)
/\
Dirk Hensmanns Barkema (b. September 6, 1815 Ditzum, Germany, m. Lucke Karels)
/\
Hensmann Alberts Barkema (b. 1749 Ditzumer-Hammrich, Germany, m. Huake Geerds Graalmann)

Hensmann & Huake also had a son named Tieman Hensmanns Barkema. Tieman’s son, named Hensmann Barkema, immigrated to Jewell, Iowa. This Hensmann is the cousin of Hauko who immigrated to Meservey, Iowa. That is why there is a clan in the Jewell area and a clan in the Meservey area. Hensmann immigrated about 20 years before Hauko did.

Nancy did all of this research several years ago before the general advent of the Internet. She physically went to the Mormon Church’s vast Genealogical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah and she also hired a German researcher in Ostfriesland to do research. And she wasn’t even a blood Barkema. She was married to one. Sadly, she died of cancer two years ago.

Dini,
I believe I had a message from you some time ago and then didn't get it answered. I also had a message from Celina Barkema Vargas, who, I think is your sister. Am I correct? I believe your ancestor, Dirk, b. Sept. 1815 and my ancestor, Tieman, b. April 1812, were brothers. If this is correct, I'd like to fill in some blank spaces.
Hoping to hear from you............
Gerry Stein

To Dino;
Not all Barkemas came from Ostfriesland Germany. My branch came to the US about 1880, from Ulrum, Groningen, Netherlands. My grandparents were, John Barkema,(m) Antje Vanderploeg. Most of their family settled in Michigan, in Grand Rapids and Holland. They had ten children, though one died as an infant, (Martje),either in the netherlands, or on the voyage over .
